The Galatea was a British ship built in 1859. In 1866, Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh and the son of Queen Victoria, was given command of the ship. He travelled on it to Australia for a Royal Tour in 1867. A procession was held in his honour in Bendigo. Later that evening a large model of his ship was drawn down Pall Mall towards the Shamrock Hotel where there was to be a fireworks display. As well as 2 adults, 9 young boys were on the float, taking the part of seamen. About halfway down Pall Mall, a cracker, thrown from the crowd ignited the fireworks that were on the deck of the float, causing explosions and fire. Three boys, John Langton McGrath (aged 7), Sylvester Francis Cahill (aged 9) and Thomas Michael Walters (aged 10) later died from burns received in the explosion. Copy of a piece about Richard Hartley Smith Abbott. Abbott was born in Bendigo. He was a hardware merchant, it operated as Abbot Supply Co. He was a director of the Bendigo gas Co, Sandhurst Building Society and Sandhurst Trustees Co. He also helped pioneer tanning in Australia and he had his tannery in Mandurang. He served on the Strathfieldsaye Council and later the Bendigo City Council. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 1907 and in 1932 served as a Senator. In 1887 he was on the committee to establish an art gallery. He served on the School of Mines Council. In 1910, he attended a meeting about Miners' Phthisis in Bendigo. He invested in the Bendigo mines and his firm was a major supplier of various hardware for the mining companies. During the first goldrush of the 1850s, Chinese miners referred to the Bendigo region (then Sandhurst) as Dai Gum San 大金山 - literally 'Big Gold Mountain'. The Golden Dragon Museum is situated in the city of Bendigo, Victoria, Australia. The museum is dedicated to the culture and history of Chinese Australians, particularly in the region. Built on the historical site of one of Bendigo's Chinatowns, the museum's precinct also includes Chinese Gardens and a temple to Kuan Yin. Through the museum accreditation program, it was the first accredited museum in Victoria and opened in 1991. Sandhurst and Electric Tramways Company introduced the first trams to Bendigo in June 1890. These were battery operated trams but it soon became obvious that the battery life was unable to copy with Bendigo's hilly terrain. The trams were converted to steam in 1892. In 1899 the tramways were sold to the Electric Supply Company of Victoria and in 1903 the trams were converted to electricity. After WW1 the SEC was formed and took over the running of the trams. With the increased usage of cars, patronage of the trams began to drop off after WW2. In 1972 the tramways closed as a commuter service. Gunpowder is very volatile and can be ignited by the smallest spark. Several horrific accidents resulted in NSW passing legislation to cover the safe storage of gunpowder but initially these laws did not apply to Victoria. this was rectified and the first Melbourne magazine was erected on Batman's Hill in 1845. The Victorian Gunpowder Act (1857) made local councils responsible for the safe storage of gunpowder. The Victorian government made L.909 available for a suitable building in Sandhurst. Built on Camp Hill it was finished in April 1857 and the first keeper, Mr J. F. Kerr was appointed in October 1857.
