Miss Roberts: Our Senior Mistress, Miss Ethel P. Roberts, having been in the teaching service for forty-three years retired on September 14th this year. She had been senior mistress at our School since its foundation eight years ago. The Head Prefects, Faye Davis and Alex Suvoltos presented her with a sheath of flowers and a portable radio on behalf of the pupils as a token of our appreciation of her loyalty and devotion to the School. The staff, on the previous eveing had honoured Miss Roberts at a dinner held at the George Hotel. In her farewell speech to the pupils, Miss Roberts traced the history of the School to the present day and gave special mention and thanks to the Prefects and all others who had gone the "Biblical" second mile to help her and the School.miss roberts, ballarat east high school, ethel roberts, faye davis, alex suvoltos

Ballarat East: This year is the third anniversary of the opening of our modern Ballarat East High School. We are growing, with 360 pupils, ranging from the first to the fourth form. At our speech night last year, we had Kevan Gosper (a member of the Australian Olympic Team) to present the sports awards. In 1956 the School Fair was officially opened by the Mayoress Mrs L. T. Hodgson, who was introduced by president of the Parents' Association Mr G. Bromley. Mr Bromley thanked the large crowd for their support and asked them to also inspect the school ... Mrs Hodgson was presented with a shoulder spray by the secretary Mrs H. Smith. Bernard O'Dowd was an Australian poet and anarchist. He was born in Beaufort in 1866 and worked at different times as a teacher, librarian and parliamentary draftsman. He was dismissed from his position at St Alipius' school in Ballarat for heresy. He had a particular interest in the Federation of Australia and formation of the Constitution, which features in his poem "Australia". O'Dowd co-edited Tocsin with Jack Andrews. Tocsin was a labor newspaper in Melbourne. Others involved with the newspaper include Edward Findley and, for a short time, Norman Lindsay. Apart from his tecahing qualifications Mr. Meretz has a law degree from Tel Aviv branch of Hebrew University. After all Melbourne already has Mount Scopus College taking children from all over Melbourne and four or five other Jewish day schools in a system which is already one if not the best for a community of its size in the world. One of the most important answers to the question is that none of the existing primary schools, not even Mount Scopus, really serves the Jewish educational needs of primary school children in the northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne.
