Certificate, Royal Human Society, 1921
This item is a Certificate of Merit awarded to Leslie Arthur Tinker for bravery in risking his life in going to the rescue of passengers on the motor launch "Nestor " on the Hopkins River at Warrnambool On January 09 1921. Leslie Arthur Tinker was 31 years of age at the time of this rescue of passengers from the launch"Nestor". Les Tinker was the third son of Jessie and Frank Tinker. He was caretaker at the Town Hall for many years and lived on site. He was married to Elsie Moore and they had one son Donald born 1928. The sinking of the Nestor claimed 10 lives in Warrnambool that day and was a tragedy for Warrnambool. Two long remaining survivors were Janet Glass Dickson who died in 2011 at 97 years of age and A Mr Jim Russell who was still living in Warrnambool in 2011 at the age of 94.This certificate has strong historical and social significance with strong links to one of Warrnambool's larger families. The event itself was a tragedy for Warrnambool with ten people losing their lives. The award comes from The Royal Humane Society of Australasia and as such is a national recognition. Vase, Joy McElvey
The vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the Christchurch earthquake of 22 February 2011. The vase was gifted to the College by Professor Edward Shipton (known as Ted) on his retirement as Dean of the Faculty of Pain Medicine, and from Council. Professor Shipton is from New Zealand. The gift was accompanied by a card with the following inscription: "Thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your great institution as Councillor and Faculty Dean these past two years. My gift to the College is a small vase. This vase was made from the liquefaction that came out of the 22 February 2011 Christchurch Earthquake. It pays tribute to the medical personnel, our Fellows and Trainees that gave so much during that time to preserve life and relieve suffering. The first Presbyterian gathering was held in Wycheproof in 1876, this led to the organization of a congregation and the building of a church. The first church was in Charles Street on the north side of the Mount. It served the congregation for twenty years. The new church in Mount Street opened 06-09-1896 and after 115 years the doors closed for worship in 2011.A building of spiritual and social significance to the Presbyterian congregation and wider community of Wycheproof and District for 115 years.Small format sepia print taken between 1912-1937of the Wycheproof Presbyterian Church Complex. Designed on early English lines, the church dated 1896 was built of red-brick with buttresses and decorated cream-brick trimmings. The arched windows are glazed in diamond shaped leadlight. The high pitched roof is of galvanized corrugated iron. The Sunday School Hall 1912, of timber construction with feature trim of arched windows and doors and a galvanized corrugated iron roof. The Manse 1909, of timber construction with galvanized corrugated iron roof and fret-work on the space above the verandah. Iron lace decorates the wooden verandah posts. Fencing: Post and Rail. Tablecloth - Bogong Hotel - Dorothy Anderson Collection, c1950's
The Bogong Hotel, Tawonga, was 125 years old when it was destroyed by fire early December, 2011. Mr & Mrs Crotty started the hotel, then one of their daughters who married a Higginson continued running it for a number of years. The Hore family then took over - Dick and Essie, followed by Norman and Vera, then the other Hore brothers. The Bogong Hotel commenced in 1886 and was the meeting place for people living in the Upper Kiewa Valley until it was burnt down in December 2011. Its publicans included members from local families - the Crotty's, Higginson's and Hore's including Vera Hore who was born in 1909 and died in 2000.
