Brodribb State School was State School 3635. It is now on the grounds of the Primary School at Orbost. The schoolopened on 1st of January 1910. It consisted of a building constructed by the parents of the children concerned. This early structure was leased to the Department which had refused requests by the parents to provide a school. This arrangement persisted until 1950. The first Head Teacher was Hubert E. Neville who served there from 1st of January 1910 to 7th of July 1910. In 1950 the Jarrahmond School building was moved to Brodribb, and provided much improved facilities for the teacher and pupils. This building remained in use until 1965 when the school closed because of insufficient numbers. The Brodribb School remained vacant until 1968, when, moved to Orbost, it became an integral part of the school in Ruskin Street Orbost. This school record is of immediate interest and value to the pupils and staff who have learned and taught in the Brodribb State School. Prior to the 1960s, hats were worn by all men. Aluminium hat stretchers were generally in use from the 1920’s. The hat was placed on the aluminium dome shaped piece. When the handle was turned, the dome section split vertically, one section moving away from the fixed half. A graduated scale along the side indicated the size. This item was possibly used in the hat factory in Orbost. Stuart Hats commenced manufacturing hats in about 1948 and closed their factory in Orbost around 1953 probably because of the high transport costs. The company's head factory was in Melbourne. The hats made in Orbost were sold all over Australia as well as in Melbourne at Myers and David Jones. This photograph is linked with photograph 1168. Orbost locals have been taking camping holidays at East Cape since at least the early 20th century. From the mid-1940s about a dozen huts were located there, mostly by locals from the Orbost area, to establish what was known as the 'Conran Settlement' or 'Conran Community'. These huts were subject to permissive occupancy laws which were invoked by the State Labor Government to force their removal in 1986. This large and very heavy stone was donated by Albert Emphield. The Bairnsdale-Orbost railway was opened in 1916 to serve the agricultural and timber industry. This is a photograph of Samuel Smith, aged 92, with his dog outside his home, Gloucester House, near Cann River. He was the keeper at CapeEverard (Point Hicks) for five years.He retired from the lighthouse position in 1904. His life story was written in The Snowy River Mail, Orbost, Wednesday Evening – 27 January 1937 as "LIFE STORY OF SAMUEL SMITH". He was born in Gloucestershire in 1844 and died in 1937 at the the Orbost Hospital. There was an obituary in The Argus (Melbourne) on Saturday 18 February, 1939. Samuel Smith, of Noorinbee, East Gippsland, was the last survivor of the original crew of the frigate Victoria, the first vessel of the old Victorian Navy. When the Victoria arrived in Melbourne in 1861 after having landed soldiers in New Zealand for the Maori War, the crew was given a civil reception, and each member was presented with a sovereign in honor of the birth of the Victorian Navy. There is no record of which family is in the photograph. The slips at Corringle was a popular picnic area for Orbost people. Corringle Slips is situated at the mouth of the Snowy River Estuary. The Corringle Slips were built by Samuel Richardson and sons during the time when the Orbost Shipping Company was operating. The Slips were washed away in the 1893 floods and reassembled by Martin Jorgensen who then became a part owner of the Slips. In the late 1890's, Corringle was a thriving rural community. These apothecary bottles were used to dispense medications and also for show or display purposes. The labels under glass bottles had a recessed section that the label was placed into. The Man from Snowy River" is a poem by Australian bush poet Banjo Paterson. It was first published in The Bulletin, an Australian news magazine, on 26th April 1890. The poem tells the story of a horseback pursuit to recapture the colt of a prizewinning racehorse that escaped from its paddock and is living wild with the brumbies (wild horses) of the mountain ranges. Eventually the brumbies descend a seemingly impassably steep slope, at which point the assembled riders give up the pursuit, except the young hero, who spurs his pony down the "terrible descent" to catch the mob.Two characters mentioned in the early part of the poem are featured in previous Paterson poems; "Clancy of the Overflow" and Harrison from "Old Pardon, Son of Reprieve".The town of Orbost is situated on the Snowy River and the town has always been "the heart of Snowy River country".A first day cover for "The Man From Snowy River" stamps. This ledger was used in Orbost as many of the names written inside are locals. It may have been used at a haberdashery store or by a local person who made items in a private business.This appears to be a record of a small commercial enterprise conducted by an Orbost local. This sword was collected by Norman Ladner in New Britain during WW11. It was returned to Australia in 1946. This cap was part of the uniform of the Orbost Municipal Band. 1937-1975 (circa). It was worn by members of the Wehner family who played in the band. They were Tom, Eric and Max Wehner.The Orbost Municipal Orbost Band played a major role in the Orbost community activities. Charles Spink made sure each soldier returning home from the 1914 to 1918 war was welcomed home in front of the Shire Hall to the music of the Orbost Municipal Band. The band played in the main street on most Friday nights and in 1929 the band played at the official opening of the Buchan Caves, by Sir Albert Lind.A black serge cap with a black shade peak on front. Glasses are from Dixon's Hotel, now the Commonwealth Hotel in Orbost. Laura Dixon held the hotel licence from 04/04/10 until 05/02/17.The Commonwealth Hotel opened New Year's Day 1901. Mr Jasper Drew held the first licence. Baptism through the ages has held great importance in celebrating a new life for social and religious beliefs and to announce another generation. This photograph shows Pike's buggy with Joe Pike, Mrs George Pike, Annie Bruton and Maggie Middleditch on the verandah. Annie Bruton was the wife of Jack Bruton who came to Orbost about 1891. When land was made available for selection at Murrungowar. they took up a selection and embarked in dairying, sheep-farming and pig-raising. They transformed a veritable wilderness into a productive farm by sheer hard work and liberal expenditure. By 1892 he had secured a licence for an hotel and accommodation house, store and the first post office at Murrungowar. For a time she was licensee of the Murrungowar Hotel. In December 1897 he was living at Murrungowar when he made application for a Roadside Victualler’s License for a house situated at Boulder Creek, East Gippsland, containing four rooms in course of erection, exclusive of those required for family. He was a butcher at Orbost in 1902-03 and also had a farm on the Bendoc Road. He was a member of the first Golf committee. After leasing the hotel to Jonson's he moved to Orbost and started brick-making near the Orbost water service basin on the Bendoc Road. He had the order for the bricks required for the Masonic Hall. Mr and Mrs Bruton resided at Murrungowar for 29 years. They let their property to Messrs McDONALD and sons and retired to Orbost in December 1920. Mr Bruton had not been in very good health for the last 4 or 5 years of his life, and about a fortnight prior to his death he got wet at his brick kiln, and contracted pneumonia which led to hiThis is a pictorial record of the the Murrungowar Township which was once a thriving settlement with a hotel, store, post office and school. In the 1890s pioneers were attracted to the area with the promise of a railway from Orbost. However, when the promised railway did not eventuate most of the farms were abandoned. this is a photograph taken at the original jetty at Tabbara on the Brodribb River used by Samuel Richardson who established his mill in 1882. There was a constant demand for timber to supply the growing townships of Orbost , Marlo and surrounds. It was at this mill that the original paddle steamer Curlip was built. Helena Warrem (1871-1962) was a self-taught photographer who became both the local press correspondent and a producer of humorous trompe l'oeil postcard images. Helena Warren was a thirty-two year old settler living on a small mixed farm with her husband, William, at Newmerella, near Orbost in Gippsland, Victoria, when she bought her first camera, an Austral Box quarter-plate. Her family says she was entirely self-taught, like many women photographers who started out with nothing but the instructions on the packets of film and chemicals. In over fifty years practice she graduated from the total novice, who opened all her first mail order plates in bright sunlight and ruined them, to a competent photographer who became both the local press correspondent and an inveterate producer of humorous trompe l’oeil postcard images. Helena Francis Warren (nee McKeown) was married to William John Warren and lived in Newmerella. She supplied the photos for the Back-To-Orbost celebration book in 1937 and also designed the Back-To-Orbost badge. She was known for her soft toy making. Broadbent's Official Road Guides Company took over George R. Broadbent's business in 1935. In 1963, it changed its name to Broadbent's Road Maps Pty. Ltd. George Robert Broadbent (1863-1947), cyclist and map publisher, was born on 3 November 1863 at Ashby near Geelong, Victoria. At various times Broadbent held most Victorian and Australian road cycling records. Broadbent became an active vice-president of the Good Roads Association of Victoria in November 1912 and was consulted regularly during the preparation of the country roads bill. That year he took over the Argus motoring column, wrote tirelessly on road improvements and maintenance, and became manager of the Automobile Club's new touring department in 1914.A 160 pp road guide book titled Broadbent's Official Road Guide Melbourne - Sydney. These blackboard accessories were common in the classroom in a time before whiteboards became the norm.This item is an example of an item commonly used in schools before the 21st century.Two wooden pieces which are joined by a wingnut so that it can be opened or closed and held in position.
