Clothing - Trousers
In about 1888 William George Ashman (1871-11/2/1944) began a tailoring business in High Street, Eaglehawk. In 1890 he admitted his brother Arthur Thomas Ashman to the business and they traded as Ashman Brothers. In 1936 the company of Ashman and sons was registered at 265 Hargreaves Street. They specialised in made to measure, hand tailored suits. William married Clara Hunkin (1871-25/11/1944) in 1894. Their sons, John, Eric, Basil and Charles followed into the family business.Woolen fabric trousers, part of Dress Suit. A decorative strip runs down each leg. The waistband can be adjusted on either side by belt/buckle attachments. Trousers fasten with two buttons and there are four buttons at the fly opening at front. There are two deep lined pockets either side and one top pocket at rear on LHS. There is a maker's label stitched to the lining of the Rear pocket which reads "Ashmans, Hargreaves Street, Bendigo 'The Home of Better Suits'". A name written in ink below the maker's label is 'Mr M. Suurpaa, 28-3-1961 7252." Administrative record - Invoicing book
The item is a hard cover invoicing book of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Inside the front cover is an index page listing customer name and customer number. The following pages are carbon copy records of work completed for each customer, recording date and description of work along with price. The pages are printed with the numbers 01 to 99 in the top right-hand corner. Pages 01 to 94 have been used. Pages 95 to 99 are blank. The descriptions of work mostly relate to work completed on cars but also includes hiring out of cars, destination and miles travelled. The customers include army personnel and recruiters. Each page is signed and or checked off in red pencil. The brown hard cardboard cover is worn and marked. The spine of the book is brown canvas. The pages are stapled together. The book includes the date range of 01 - 30 (?) November 1917. This item is part of the Margaret Roberts Collection.Written in grey lead pencil on the front cover is "November 1917". Administrative record - Work Book
The item is a soft cover book recording daily work of T.J. Connolly, Ironmongers, Sandhurst. Each handwritten page is dated at the top and records the customer surname, goods supplied, price of items and total price. In most entries, a town or area is included after the customer's name. Each page has been wavy lines added over each customer entry. The red soft cover has a decorative inlay both front and back with some wearing at the corners. The number "231" is stamped directly on the front cover. The pages are bound together with string. The book includes the date range of 25 February 1897 to 24 May 1897. All pages have been used. This item is part of the Margaret Roberts Collection.At crossed tick has been added to the front cover to the left of the "231" stamp. A line of ink sits under some water marks at the top of the front cover. RFDS was begun by Reverend John Flynn as an aerial Medical Service out of Cloncurry, Queensland in 1928. By 1934 it had expanded across outback Australia. Cobb and Co. was a stagecoach line transporting diggers between the gold fields. There were many coach lines but there names were generalised to "Cobb and Co. Letter - Message in a Bottle
In 1915 Arthur Swanwick from Bendigo enlisted in the AIF. He left for overseas service in March 1916. He wrote a message to his sweetheart Jessie Campbell, placed it in a bottle and threw it overboard from HMAT A18 "Wiltshire". The bottle was found on a beach near Robe SA and the message was sent to Jessie. Arthur returned home and he and Jessie married in 1918. Arthur died on 11 April 1968. Arthur's niece sent the updated information after the story was shared with the family who knew nothing about it. A hand written letter on lined green paper sent to BHS providing an update on the story of a "Message in a Bottle" written by Arthur Swanwick to Jessie Campbell. A black and white wedding photograph of Arthur and Jessie, a black and white photograph of dedication plaques from the Bendigo RSL WW1 Honour Board and a Thank you card form Arthur's niece thanking someone for letting the family know about the story (18 October 2013). ww1, message in a bottle, swanick -

Photograph - Bendigo Conservatory and gardens
Fifty nine acres of land was reserved for a park in1861, and the first gardener began setting out the gardens in 1870. The conservatory was built in 1897 and is the last building of its type in a public park.The conservatory was designed by Mr G. Minto, city surveyor at the time. The building is 72 feet long and 24 feet wide. The walls re twenty two feet high and are topped by a lantern roof, adding a further six feet. Textile - High School Blazer
Golden Square High School in the city of Bendigo, was established in temporary accommodation at Camp Hill Primary School in central Bendigo in 1960. With the completion of the new school's buildings, it moved to Golden Square in 1962, providing for Forms 1 to 6, now known as years 7 to 12. In 1978 it became a 7–10 school and was one of the original feeder schools to Bendigo Senior High School. In 1986, a Hearing Impaired Unit was established and in 1990 it underwent a name change to become Golden Square Secondary College. The Golden Square Secondary College campus closed on 28 November 2008. It merged with Kangaroo Flat and Flora Hill secondary colleges as part of the implementation of the Bendigo Education Plan. The green blazer has one upper and two lower pockets, each lined at the top with a strip of gold fabric with diagonal red stripes and a row of red stitching bordering the strip. The top pocket shows the school emblem i colours of green, gold, red and white in square and rectangular block formation. "High School" is written in gold against a white background at the top of the emblem and "Golden Square" is embroidered in part circle below the emblem. The name is dark gold against a fainter gold background. The Blazer is fastened with three buttons. Only one button remains attached. Another button is in a pocket. A label under the collar reads "Tailored by Clark in Pure wool' "Size 34". Two badges are pinned to the top pocket. "PREFECT" . Reflecting the school colours - gold lettering on red on a green rectangle set against a gold oval shape. "S.R.C." Gold lettering on green background.Written on the label "K Jeffrey 7G". Donor believes items were completed by her great aunts - Lydia, Rosa and Olivia Pollard when the sisters were young girls. They were completed in Country Durham England. The Arrow shirt company was founded by William H.Titus and his partner in Chicago, Illinois and in the late 1800s merged with Cluett Peabody. In 1929 Cluett, Peabody & Co. established a national menswear business under the Arrow brand name. The "Arrow" name gradually grew into a product line that included shirts, collars, handkerchiefs, cravats, pyjamas, and underwear for men and boys. (Wikipedia)Two pairs of men's underwear. Pamphlet - MERLE HALL COLLECTION: ROSALIND PARK CREATIVE VILLAGE BENDIGO PROJECT PAMPHLET, 1995
Merle Hall Collection: Rosalind Park Creative Village Bendigo Project Pamphlet for Rosalind Park Lookout - two copies. One side of the pamphlet has a layout image of the five sections of the mosaic and the poppet head base. The sections are numbers 1 to 5 Section 1: A stylised representation of the main Bendigo Goldfield based on a geological plan (Publish in 1992). It shows the lines of reef, including the famous Hustlers, Garden Gully and New Chum. Section 2: A typical cross section of the Bendigo Goldfields Section 3: The mine layout shown in this design features part of the Garden Gully line of reef. Section 4: Shown here is the Iron Bark mine on the Sheepshead reef. It has an interesting pattern of drives, stopes and winzes. Section 5: In this section the artist uses gold as her inspiration. The larger mosaic shows quartz veins winding through the earth containing gold in its various forms. The smaller mosaic represents the atomic structure of gold. It shows the the nucleus, the six shells of the atom, their electrons and orbits. The other side of the pamphlet describes the background of the community arts project, the artist, and volunteer workers, also notes mentioning the Bendigo community history. It also lists the donors for funding and business's that supported the project, with special thanks to Eric Wilkinson - Geolpogical advoser, the students and staff from Camp Hill, St Killians and Violet Street primary schools. Domestic Object - QUALTROUGH COLLECTION: CANTEEN OF CUTLERY, 1933
Twenty six piece cutlery set. Cutlery is stored in a blue box with marbled pattern with fabric hinges. There are two gold coloured clasps to close the box. A silver coloured metal plate is attached to the top of the box with an engraved inscription. Presented to Mr & Mrs J Qualtrough by MOLOGA FRIENDS 9.9.33 Also STG.SII The Cutlery set was given to Henry Thomas and Elsie Qualtrough when they left Mologa in 1933 to return to Bendigo. The tray of the box is lined with blue satin. There is a central black velvet covered frame with indentations for six dessert spoons, four teaspoons and two tablespoons. There are two indentations for teaspoons at the top. One teaspoon is missing. Spoons and forks have the Maker's mark on the back of the handle Sheffield Eng. Stainless Steel. A small piece of paper has become detached with the name of the manufacturer C. J.
