The Cutty Sark was launched on 22 November 1869. She was named by the wife of George Moodie, the ship's first master who had also supervised her construction. Cutty Sark left the Clyde on 13 January 1870. A month and two days later, she set sail from London for China. Cutty sark was designed and built by Scott & Linton of Dumbarton for 16,150 pounds. But much of the money was to be paid by Willis when the ship was launched. Just before they finished her, Scott & Linton ran out of money and went bankrupt. She was completed by William Denny & Brothers. The Cutty Sark was the first ship to reach London with a tea cargo in 1877. But she was one of only nine sailing ships that returned that year - in 1870 there had been 59. Steamships were now dominating the tea trade. In 1883 the Cutty Sark joined the booming trade in transporting Australian wool. Every year until 1895 she set out in the summer for Australia, to load a cargo of wool bales and return to England in time for the wool sales ini the first three months of the new year. Cutty Sark soon established herself as the fastest of the wool clippers. Phonograph cylinders are the earliest commercial medium for recording and reproducing sound. Commonly known simply as "records" , these hollow cylindrical objects have an audio recording engraved on the outside surface, which can be reproduced when they are played on a mechanical cylinder phonograph. The "Gold-Moulded" process was developed in 1902 and involved creating a metal mould from a wax master; a brown wax blank would be placed inside and heated . as the blank expanded, the grooves would be pressed into the blank which would then be cooled. The "gold" is derived from the traces of that metal used as a conductive agent in the initial mould. "Whistler and his Dog" was performed by the Edison Military Band.Edison Records was one of the earliest record labels which pioneered sound recording and reproduction and was important in the early recording industry. Gold Moulded records used a process that Edison had developed, that allowed a mould to be made from a master cylinder which then permitted the production of several hundred cylinders to be made from the mould. Previously cylinders were recorded live or by hooking two machine together to copy from one cylinder to another, and they used softer brown wax which wore out in as few as twenty playings. Plate, City of Warrnambool, Late 20th century
This plate would have been part of a crockery set used by the Warrnambool City Council at civic functions and receptions. It probably dates from the late 20th century. It was made by Westminster China which was a business established by Stanley Rogers and Sons Limited in Cheltenham, Melbourne in 1954. In 1977 the business was moved to Sandringham, Melbourne and by the 1990s it was mainly producing items for the hospitality sector. Warrnambool became a Municipality in 1865, a Borough in 1863, a Town in 1883 and a City in 1918. The seal and motto, ‘By These We Flourish’ were designed and drafted by John Macdonald, an original member of the Municipal Council in 1856 and the first Head Master of Warrnambool’s National School in 1850. This plate is of interest as one of a set used by the Warrnambool City Council in the late 20th century. This is a white china plate, slightly bowl-shaped, with a gold strip around the rim. The gold is partly fading. Fire Extinguisher, Pyrene Co Ltd, Mid 20th century
This fire extinguisher was used for commercial purposes in the Nullawarre Post office. The item was made in England by the Pyrene Co Ltd (1914-1971), one of the world’s leading manufacturers of fire fighting equipment in the early to mid 20th century. The extinguisher had a pump action and probably contained carbon tetrachloride. Nullawarre is a small agricultural settlement 25 kilometres south east of Warrnambool. The Nullawarre area was settled in the late 1860s and 1870s and today has a store and Post Office and a school. Charles Williams was the Post Master at Nullawarre in the early to mid 20th century and also delivered the mail. His wife, Vida was the Post Mistress. This fire extinguisher is of interest firstly as an example of a common item used commercially in the past and secondly as an item that came from the Nullawarre Post Office, used in this commercial building in the early to mid 20th century. This is a metal fire extinguisher which has been painted but the paint is mostly worn away. It is cylindrical in shape with ridged areas at the base and top. It has a clip handle. An analog sound medium. Played on a phonograph / gramaphone / turntable / record player. They play for 10 to 30 minutes per side. Made from shellac in the 1940s until 1948, then made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Single is 45 rpm, 12 inch is 33 and a third rev per minute, (LP) is long playing = 'album'. Late 1950s introduction of stereo phonic sound on commercial discs. His Masters Voice (HMV) is a British Record Compamny created in 1901. In 1961 EMI converted the HMV label into an exclusive classical music label. HMV has a logo of a dog listening to music.The record collection is understood to have been held by a local school in the Kiewa Valley possibly Mt Beauty or Bogong primary schools.Flat black disc with an inscribed, modulated spiral groove starting at the outside edge. Made from shellac - rotational speed of 78 revs per minute, 33 and a third rpm (largest) or 45 rpm (smallest). The collection consists of about 50 records including children's and adult's some with cardboard covers. Many of the adult records have the HMV label. After spending 2 years in compulsory military service he entered Edinburgh University, graduating Master of Arts. His theological education was at New College, Edinburgh. After qualifying, he spent two years in Leith as assistant to the Rev. David Easton. In 1957 he married Elizabeth Dowling, an Australian. In 1961 Peter Mackie with his wife and 2 children came to Australia. In 1962 he was inducted into the Charge of Bamawm-Lockington, near Echuca. In 1965 he was called to Kew. Photo of Harry Tinson who was winemaker at Baileys in Glenrowan from 1968 until 1982. An ageing Alan Bailey (greatgrandson of founder Richard Bailey) sold the winery to Davis Consolidated Industries (mainly a gelatine producer). At the time Harry Tinson, with a Master’s degree in physical engineering, was in the corporate planning department of Davis. The board had decided it wished to diversify into wine production and Tinson was charged with the responsibility of finding a suitable target. He came up with Baileys, and was instructed to negotiate the purchase of a 50 per cent share in the business. Bailey said “all or nothing” ! Functional object - Bottle
The Victoria Tower was lost on her maiden voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne on 17 October 1869/10/1869 after 85 days at sea. It was wrecked on Lonsdale Reef while approaching Port Phillip Heads. The 2,300 tons cargo contained general cargo, bottled beer, slates, iron pipes and hardware. It was owned by the White Star Line, T. Ismay. The Master of the vessel was Captain Kerr. The weather conditions were hazy, squally, thick and clearing at times. The cause was attributed to running ashore in thick weather and careless navigation. The Court of Marine Inquiry found that the steering gear had failed as the SS Time entered Port Phillip Heads. It was established that the fault lay with the Lloyd's surveyor for not detecting the fault when the Time had been classified Al. No blame was attached to the master. Two Queenscliff fishermen purchased weck for 950 pounds (insured value 30,000 pounds)and its timber cargo - handsome profit. Cargo and most fittings of value recovered. Wreck visible until early 1960s, until during a storm it slid off northern side of Nepean reef and broke up in 20 feet of water. David Frazer (1966- ) David Frazer is an Australian artist who works in painting, wood engraving, etching, lithography and bronze. Born in Victoria, David Frazer graduated from the Phillip Institute of Technology, Melbourne with a Fine Art degree specialising in painting. In 1996 he achieved an Honours degree from Monash University specialising in Printmaking and in 2000, gained his Master of Arts. In 2002, David was awarded the Keith Wingrove Bookplate Design Award and in 2007, he was a major prizewinner at the International Print Biennial in Guanlan, China and a featured Australian artist on the ABC’s documentary series ‘Artist at Work’. Rosalie BONINGTON (09 April 1946 - ) Rosalie Bonington was born in Ballarat and received her early education here. A Music graduate of the University of Melbourne, she also completed a Master of Arts degree in Composition at La Trobe University. She currently lives in Ballarat, and works as a composer, teacher and church organist. In addition to occasional works for larger instrumental forces, her compositional output comprises mainly vocal, choral, organ and liturgical music, and she accepts regular publisher commissions in these genres. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. The Art Collection features over 2000 works and was listed as a 'Ballarat Treasure' in 2007.'Music for a Graduation' was commissioned by the University of Ballarat (now Federation University Australia) to provide fanfare/processional music for such ceremonial occasions. The composer's brief was also to make the music reflect something of the early history of allarat and something of an academic tradition. To these latter ends the tune of Charles Thatcher's ballad of the goldfields, 'Look Out Below', and the ancient university tune, 'Gaudeamus igitur', have been incorporated into the body of the music. Juli HAAS (1952–2014) Born Melbourne Juli Haas studied under Euan Heng’s at the Monash University Churchill campus. Haas completed a Bachelor of Arts in 1989, a Graduate Diploma of Arts in 1990 and a Master of Arts (Research) in 1995. Juli Haas has won Sir John Sulman prize in 1995 at the Art Gallery of NSW and in 1994 and 1997 the Martin Hanson Memorial Works on Paper Prize. The Gippsland Art School collects examples of limited edition prints to use as a teaching collection. Tony HANNING (1950- ) Dr Tony Hanning is an internationally recognised glass artist whose work is represented in all major collections in Australia and many overseas collections including the V&A Museum in London and the Tacoma Art Museum in the USA.
