The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. It was the first independent school of nursing in Victoria and continued until it closed in 1989. The book "The First of its Kind" was published in 2015. Printed in Bendigo by "Bendigo Modern Press". Letter has reminisces of starting at NDSN Lister House in 1962.Three-page handwritten letter and photocopy of fifteen graduate nurses for the PTS School 56, written by Nanayaui Nambiar from Canada, replying and coming to NDSN Lister House reunion. The Institute of Social Welfare, Watsonia operated on the Loyola Seminary campus 1973-74, which was purchased by the Probation and Training Division to run certificate courses for social workers and others. There was a proposal to establish a periodic detention centre on the site in November 1973, against which there were protests by local residents.News article, text only. John Lundy-Clarke grew up in the Kalorama/Mt Dandenong area and later in life (1972-74) began to write a comprehensive history of the area working from an original settlement map in an effort to cover all areas. Barbers Bridge was named after George Barber, an early settler.Black and white photograph showing a man standing on a bridge over the Olinda Creek. 1910Handwritten n reverse: Barbers Bridge on Olinda Creek 1910. This was a ford crossed by the road after Isaac Jeeves selected allotment “C” “Jeeves Saddle” in 1871 and stopped travel through his property. The bridge has been built several times but at time of writing (1974) is replaced by a culvert consisting of two pipes two feet six inches wide. The first edition of this magazine was produced by associated elementary schools in the Omeo Shire. The magazine was published from 1920 to 1927 and 1963 to 1969. There was a special issue in 1985. In all issues there is writing by children from schools that have since closed down. This item reflects the changes in education in East Gippsland and is a useful comparison tool for literacy teaching.
