Sixty five page, plus manila covers, bound with a brown coloured comb binder report titled "Single-ended tram operations - A Feasibility study for the Bourke St and Collins Street routes". Looks at the background for the proposal, operational issues and an economic evaluation, including loading and unloading, a CBD loop and capital costs. Report has a note on page 2 that it was prepared prior to tendering for new trams. Report not dated as such but on front cover has a date "c1977", though based on the note done prior to ordering new trams could be c1976. See also Reg Item 338. Military Payment Certificates (MPC) were an accepted form of payment on military bases but could generally not be used to buy local goods or services. When American officials believed that a series of MPC was being used fraudulently on the black market, a new series would be released, making the previous version worthless. Only those authorised to have MPC on a Conversion Day were able to convert them to the newly issued notes. Five Military payment certificates. Bapaume was a large German-held town almost within sight of the Australians’ trench lines throughout the winter months on the Somme. Suddenly, from 24 February 1917 it became evident that the enemy was retiring. The British advanced after them, and by the morning of 17 March Australian troops reached the outskirts of Bapaume. The soldiers’ heightened spirits were exemplified by the band of the 5th Australian Brigade playing amid the burning ruins as they marched into the old town square on the 19th. However booby traps and time bombs had been left behind; one exploded in the town hall a week later burying men and killing twenty-five.On the Western Front, Bapaume was a coveted position between the two strategically-important areas of Artois and Somme. This postal note was purchased at Hobart West Post Office but was not cashed in. Postal notes (or postal orders) were introduced as a means of transmitting smaller amounts of currency within a country. They were sanctioned by the Universal Postal Union and upon joining this body, each colony was required to issue them. Money orders were later introduced for larger sums. The post office became responsible for postal notes in 1890. Postal notes were a way of sending money through the post. They were replaced by money orders. Duplicate money orders were issued as replacements.This item is an example of a form of currency which has been superseded by postal and money orders.
