Easter 1936. Mavis and I took turns at the wheel.. cost was unbelievable abour 7 pounds plus a few meals (bed and breakfast was 5/- only) petrol about //1/3d 1/2er gallon. Travelling salesmen (hawkers) regularly journeyed from farm to farm selling useful household items like needles, thread, clothing, even cooking pots. Mr T Saker was a salesman selling drapery. Lake Bolac's eastern lake-bed and beach during the 19987-2010 drought, looking south. The lake bank exposed in this photograph is an aboriginal midden about a likometer across excavated by Dr Peter Coutts in the 1970's. The new Warrnambool Methodist Church was opened on 1st April 1939. The Church complex was designed by Messrs A.S. and R.A. Eggleston and built by J.D.E. and T. Walter. It comprised a church seating 430 people, an assembly hall seating 300, kindergarten and primary classrooms. The three ministers present in the photograph were: Rev B. Wylie (Hamilton), Rev N. The original Methodist Church in Warrnambool was erected on a site facing Liebig and Koroit Streets in 1850, but it proved to be not satisfactory because of its construction and being built over wombat holes. The second church was erected around the old church and opened 23 May 1858. That church remained in place for 81 years until 1939 when a new church was built and opened. The Rev. Peter D. Blackwood was ordained in 1977 and his first placement was at Burwood Heights. He has had several placements, including as Presbytery Minister and Associate General Secretary of the Synod. He is now retired. This picture was taken after a church protest in Warrnambool. "Members of the Warrnabool UC walked home from church on Sunday 28 September, in a protest against Sunday racing. The 150-strong congregation left cars parked outside the church, which coincidentally blocked all car spots outside the local TAB. The vehicles were left parked throughout the afternoon, creating an inconvenience for punters wanting to place a quick bet. UC minister, the Rev. Hector Dunn was a continuing Presbyterian minister from Queensland & NSW. Ordained 1945. Served Grenfell NSW, Hobart, Warrnambool, 1977 was the first moderator of the continuing Presbyterian church. Mrs. Ethel Mitchell was the Moderator of the Synod of Victoria at the time. The booklet's full title is 'Motorists and Tourists who assist to build The Great Ocean Road (Barwon Heads to Warrnambool) will have helped to found a worthy Memorial to all Victorian Soldiers and a National Asset for Victoria.' Date of the copy is unknown. The booklet is an appeal for donations toward the construction of the Great Ocean Road which, upon completion, would then be a Memorial to soldiers and, during construction, provide employment for returned soldiers.
