Wooden shield from the Ballarat Fire Brigade Social Committee. Shield is known as the Schulze Memorial Shield and was for the winner of the annual Billiards tournament. The shield is wooden with 3 metal plaques attached with the names of the winners engraved. Shield was presented in 1946, 1947 & 1948. The "Echo" was a small newspaper issued by the 2/22nd Infantry Training Battalion based at the racecourse camp at Epsom, Bendigo. Purpose of camp was to train new recruits and feed them into the Infantry Battalion itself. Aim of the newspaper would be as a conduit of official information and for local morale.News sheets issued by Training Battalion titled the 2/22 Echo. The Bogong Hotel was a central point for social gatherings in the Kiewa Valley. It was 125 years old when it was burnt down in December 2011. Activites of the Girls Club included organising annual socials and a ball to raise funds for the Hurstbridge Memorial Park in 1923. They were particularly active in the 1920s and 1930s. This photo forms part of a collection of photographs gathered by the Shire of Eltham for their centenary project book, "Pioneers and Painters: 100 years of the Shire of Eltham" by Alan Marshall (1971).
