Electronic or battery clock mounted in a former Melbourne cable tram era wood block, cut from an former Melbourne tramway paving red gum block with one of the faces polished up The clock is inset into the wooden block, plastic, Perspex front. The clock made by "SHONTEK" Small N size battery - battery has been removed from the item. The block has a label on the underside - "Hand crafted in Australia by William Carroll", Arraign, Victoria, Phone 03 5622 3644. Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made by or for the Melbourne Cable Tram Operator and then reportedly subsequently used on ESCo No. 12. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, consisting of frame, bell, striker, bell pull section, one nuts and two pins. Cast with the initials "MTO" - Melbourne Cable Tram operator, in one end of the frame. Bell donated, reportedly off ESCo 12. Short bell type. Bell cleaned of grime - 12/2009 See Other Notes. Part or panel that fitted over the end saloon window - fitted with hinges to allow access to the saloon door slide mechanism. Internal part of this part has a light colour finish on the rear. By 2025, 100 new trams will be designed and built due to a $1.5 billion government injection to fund 100 ‘‘next-generation trams’’, replacing A and Z-Class trams. Two manufacturers have been shortlisted to design and build the trams: French rail manufacturer Alstom and a joint venture comprising Spanish rail maker CAF and UGL. At 25 metres long – about eight metres shorter than the newest E-Class trams – the trams will carry 150 passengers, fewer than the E-Class, which carry 210 people. Despite the smaller size, seating will remain proportionally comparable with the E-Class, with 48 people or a third of passengers getting a seat on the new fleet. Set of two newspaper cuttings regarding the first cable tram set in Melbourne. .1 - Original cutting and copy with a photo of the cable tram set 1 still operating in Melbourne - undated, notes it has been in daily use for 40 years - c1925. Has a photo of the tram showing its different support structure on the grip car. The cutting has been glued to a piece of scrap of paper which has handwriting on both sides in ink . A copy of the cutting has been trimmed in the corners. .2 - Cutting from a unknown Melbourne Newspaper - titled "First Cable Tram for Museum", reporting that cable car set 1 has been donated to the Melbourne Museum by the MMTB. Melbourne Tramway & Omnibus Co. Bell Punch No. D406. A heavy nickel or chrome plated steel ticket or fare strip canceling / registering mechanism used on Melbourne cable trams. When a fare was sold, the bell would ring advising the passenger that their fare have registered. "An ingenious device resembling in principle the ticket punch of a railway porter. It is carried by the conductor who wears pinned to his coat a 'trip-slip'. He punches this once for every fare received; the action is simultaneously registered on a dial inside the punch and bell rings to appraise the passenger of the fact. The punch is provided with a patent lock, the secret of which is known only at headquarters and effective system of check is thus secured." (" A story of the Melbourne Cable Tramway System" - page 54). Used by the MT&O and MMTB until 1922/23 when replaced by the check ticket system. Manufactured by the Railway Register Manufacturing Company.
