Postcards were a common form of souvenirs for soldiers who were travelling either during World War 1, or just after, or while returning to Australia. These postcard scenes are from Bombay which is a stop on the route from Australia to Europe. India was often the first time young soldiers saw a different culture on their way to the first World War. These were with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. There was a large collection of postcards so he may have been collecting them as souvenirs (none of these have been written on or posted). J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. His full war record is available from AWM. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', (which stopped in Bombay), arriving Portsea in 1920.Postcards were a very common form of communication in the first World War. Postcards as souvenirs or as correspondence would have been familiar to the first Legatees as they had served in World War 1. In 1992 Geoffrey Swan was the president and was about to hand over to John Stevenson. His report shows pictures from many of the activities the widows are involved in such as concerts and gatherings at Legacy House. The report also recaps events through the year such as outings and camps for the junior legatees, handicapped dependents, legacy week and the school students Anzac commemoration service. Up to the 1980s the annual report would usually contain pages containing the Presidents report and photos of significant events of the year. Between 1987 and 1990 these were published in a separate document called 'Highlights from the Annual Report'. This could be used in promoting Legacy in different ways, without all the financial information normally held in an annual report. In following years it became called 'Report from the President' then 'Highlights from the President', before becoming 'Melbourne Legacy Highlights' which was published twice a year from 2007. It was eventually renamed, 'The Torch, Melbourne Legacy Highlights' in 2012. 'The Torch' is still published twice a year. An article from the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin on the death of Legatee Ken Green (President of Melbourne Legacy in 1981). The Bulletin published articles on Legatees when they passed away. Legatee Green was born in 1917 and died in 1987. More details of his life are outlined in the articles. This is a copy of the address by Dean Thomas at the Memorial Service for Major-General Green at St Andrews Church Brighton. At 02005 is a second articles, 'A Tribute to Legatee Ken Green' written by Legacy. Legatee Ken Green served with the 15th Australian Field Company RAE 2nd AIF during World War 2. He continued with Citizen Military Forces after the war. He attained the rank of Major General with the 3rd Division between 1970-73. He joined Melbourne Legacy in 1959 on the nomination of Legatees Robert Myers and John Standish. The article was part of an album of past presidents from 1965 to 1989. The Australasian Wood Duck is commonly described as 'goose-like' in appearance. They reside throughout Australia and Tasmania in regions including grasslands, open woodlands, wetlands, flooded pastures and along the coast and bays. Unlike some breeds of ducks, this species can walk on land with ease and can often be seen perched on logs and in trees. The Wood Duck eat grass, clover and other herbs. On occasion they eat insects. This specimen is part of a collection of almost 200 animal specimens that were originally acquired as skins from various institutions across Australia, including the Australian Museum in Sydney and the National Museum of Victoria (known as Museums Victoria since 1983), as well as individuals such as amateur anthropologist Reynell Eveleigh Johns between 1860-1880. These skins were then mounted by members of the Burke Museum Committee and put-on display in the formal space of the Museum’s original exhibition hall where they continue to be on display. This display of taxidermy mounts initially served to instruct visitors to the Burke Museum of the natural world around them, today it serves as an insight into the collecting habits of the 19th century.This specimen is part of a significant and rare taxidermy mount collection in the Burke Museum. This collection is scientifically and culturally important for reminding us of how science continues to shape our understanding of the modern world. Francis Alexander McFarlane Born: 5 Sep 1878 Maldon, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. The 6th child (5th Son) of 10 children born to John James McFarlane and Jane Matthews. Died: 19 May 1962 Coburg East, Merri-bek City, Victoria, Australia. Francis married Margaret Ada Tobin in 1904 in Maldon, Mount Alexander Shire, Victoria, Australia. McFarlane worked extensively in the mining industry. According to electoral rolls McFarlane lived in Maldon from 1903 to 1927. During this time, he worked as a "cyanider" (using cyanide to separate gold from the ore) from 1903 to 1909. By 1912 he had listed his occupation as an assayer. By 1927, he listed his occupation as a metallurgist. By 1931, he was working as a metallurgist in Coburg before moving to Bendigo sometime in or prior to 1936, where he listed his occupation as "assayer". He appears as a postal worker in Coburg in 1949. He was still in Coburg in 1952 but does not have an occupation listed.This 10-page book (including cover) is the status of account for Mr. FA McFarlane from the opening of the account on 25 March 1936 to 4 Dec 1937. The account was held by the Commercial Bank of Australia. The book has a cardboard cover covered in navy blue fabric. The pages are made of thick paper, each containing tables for the purpose of tracking the accounts balance. The cover has a label stuck to the front with Mr. McFarlane's name written on it. The account book is full, with every page showing transactions. Each entry was made with either a stamp or an ink pen. The Bank book contains the Bendigo Historical Society identifier number. John and Emma Propert emigrated from England in 1877 and settled in New South Wales . Several of their 11 children became talented inventors, designing items ranging from kitchen utensils to coaches and later pop-up caravans. One of the most successful was Charles, who designed and built kitchenware over many decades. His earliest invention was irrigation equipment including patenting the common backyard rose sprinkler. Propert became a household name when he began making a wide range of kitchen implements for decades including flour sifters and chip cutters. By the 1970s Propert was Australia’s leading brand of kitchen and bathroom scales. By far the most successful product was a ball-driven egg beater, trademarked as the Ezy Whisk or Swift Whisk. In the days before electric beaters, the Ezy Whisk and Swift Whisk were market leaders and were exported world-wide. Eleanor Hinde (1842-1902) was born in Lancashire England. In 1858, Eleanor married Richard Reynold in the Forest St Wesleyn Methodist Church in Sandhurst. They both gave their address as Sailors Gully Goldfields. They had seven children together. Richard was a skilled tradesman and after he died in 1872 from lung disease, Eleanor married Arculus Opie. Eleanor owned a property on the corner of Gladstone and Stanley Streets which later became an electrical substation. She sold poultry and eggs and preserves. One of Eleanor's sons, William John, married Anna (Annie) Jorgensen, and one of her daughters. Amelia, married Anna's brother Thomas Joynes Jorgensen. The Jorgensens founded and managed Jorgensen and Sons foundry and engineering works. Peter Jorgensen (1849-1914), was a mining contractor, he lived at, "Bro," Russell street, Quarry Hill. His firm was Jorgensen and Sons, mining contractors. He was a native of the Island of Alsen, Denmark. He left Denmark in the year 1861, embarking at Hamburg in a small sailing Ship. This altar cloth represents ecclesiastical linen used in the early to mid-20th century. It is used on the altar in the Chapel of St Nicholas Seamen's Church at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum and Village. The Missions to Seamen organisation The Missions to Seamen is an Anglican (Church of England) charity that has been serving the world's seafarers since 1856. It was inspired by the work of Rev. John Ashley, who, 20 years earlier, had pioneered a ministry to seafarers in the Bristol Channel in Great Britain. When Ashley retired because of ill health, others determined that the work should continue, and they founded the Missions to Seamen. It adopted as its symbol a Flying Angel, inspired by a verse from Revelation 14 in the Bible. Today, there are over 200 ports worldwide where the Missions to Seamen has centres and chaplains. A Missions to Seamen’s Club offers a warm welcome to sailors of all colours, creeds and races. A sailor can watch television, have a drink and a chat, change money or buy goods from the club shop or worship in the Chapel. In Victoria, the Missions to Seamen still has clubs in Melbourne, Portland and Geelong. He was a Pharmaceutical Chemist prior to enlisting in the RAAF on 2/9/1940 He was reporting missing during air operations over East Prussia and later presumed to have lost his life on 30/8/1944 Awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross - citation reads Pilot Officer Wilkinson is an air gunner of great ability and determination. He has taken part in a large number of operational sorties many of which have been against some of German's most heavily defended targets. On one occasion in March 1944 when engaged n an attack on Stuttgart a Junkers 88 attacked his aircraft five times but Pilot Officer Wilkinson by his accurate directions to his captain and coolly aimed return fire drove ff the enemy aircraft in a badly damaged condition. At all times his unwavering devotion to duty and constant alertness have inspired confidence in his crew. The Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) is the third-level military decoration awarded to officers, and since 1993 to other ranks, of the United Kingdom's Royal Air Force and other services, and formerly to officers of other Commonwealth countries, for "an act or acts of valour, courage or devotion to duty whilst flying in active operations against the enemy"Black case which opens out from right side.
