J & G Meakin was an English pottery manufacturing company founded in 1851 and based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. In the 19th century, J & G Meakin was known for the vast quantities of cheap ironstone china it produced for the domestic English market and export to Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United States. From around 1970, designs included Liberty, Sterling, Trend, Classic, and Heirloom. Some of these were influenced by earlier designs. The newer wares can be distinguished by back stamp markings such as 'permanent colours', 'everlasting colour', or 'dishwasher proof'. J & G Meakin had close family and corporate affiliations to the potteries Johnson Brothers, and Alfred Meakin Ltd, which explains why many patterns are similar, if not almost the same. There was a takeover by J. & G. Meakin in 1968 of Midwinter Pottery. The firm was then taken over by the Wedgwood Group in 1970. In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased and their long-established works, Eagle Pottery, was then used for the production of Johnson Bros pottery. Eagle Pottery closed in 2004 when production was transferred abroad; the works were demolished in 2005.Item is significant as it is believed to be an early example of the SOL trademark made between 1913-1925.Ironstone wash jug and bowl set, white, often referred to as a ewer and bowl. The first commercially available, Australian-made domestic refrigerator to operate without ice was produced by Edward Hallstrom in 1923. It used kerosene as a power source and was promoted as ideal for outback stations where ice was not available. According to Museum Victoria, Hallstrom introduced the 'Silent Night' which ran on electricity or gas in 1935. However, Hailstorm's great-grandson, stated that the Silent Night refrigerator was introduced in 1928. Although Australians were among the pioneers of refrigeration in the 1850s, the technology wasn't adapted for domestic use until many decades later. The first domestic electric refrigerator was sold in America in 1913. It had an air-cooled refrigeration unit mounted on top of an ice box. The Frigidaire and Kelvinator brands date from 1918 when the first self-contained fridges were sold. Before this food safes were used as well to keep food away from flies and to keep items cool.A significant item used from the late Victorian era until around 1940 when people were beginning to be able to afford domestic refrigerators. After the second world war, most households had replaced their food storage cupboards or safes with refrigerators. This is a tall, varnished 'Roll of Honour' . Brown varnish. The top has a small gable under which is the title "ST. JOHNS CHURCH OF ENGLAND" done in gold paint. The two sides are made of a hardwood with two slots routed out of them. The bottom has a small ledge of hardwood. Under the ledge are three curved end pieces. The name section is made from plywood. The names are painted in gold paint. It has 29 names and shows Christian names. There are four gold crowns denoting the members that died.ww1, church of england bendigo, honour board

This is a large hardwood honour board. The top edge is curved, under which is the title. Under the title is a painted, coloured Australian Coat of Arms. Kangaroo and Emu. Under that is a shelf. Under that are the words "Roll of Honor". The main part has names. There are two columns, divided by a vertical piece of hardwood. All the wording is in gold paint. At the bottom is a small ledge, under that is the legend to understand the symbols. The names are on varnished plywood. The left column has 20 names. The right column has 15 names. Six are shown as died. Thirteen as wounded. The bottom just has curved decorative base.honour board, ww1, methodist church

Charles Wood MM, staff member of Beehive Stores, Bendigo volunteered for the Great War. Regt No 2453 enlisted 7.7.1915 in 5th reinforcements 24th BN AIF, awarded Military Medal 20.9.1917 at Westhoeck, awarded Bar to the Military Medal 14.6.1918 at TREUX near Albert, both times as a Signaller repairing telephone lines under fire.
