In the journey up View Street we come now to the former Masonic Hall and Temple, our present day Performing Arts Centre. As a freemason, architect W. C. The two-story section of this mill was built in about 1873 with grinding stones. In 1887 the owners Stewart and Scott purchased new roller machinery and built a four-storey building to house it. Colour transparency (slide) created in June 1976 during a tour by the Junior National Trust, which was led by members of Kew Historical Society. The collection of 21 slides reveals that the tour covered all parts of Kew, but focused understandably on heritage buildings and sites.Image of an historic place in Kew that can be dated to an exact time and place. The original structure was built as a house for the resident police sergeant and his family. Offices and a cell block were located at the rear of this building. The Queen Anne revival style employed by the Department of Public Works architects, favoured the use of red brick highlighted by stucco. The painted white stucco is not the original colour. One of a group of slides taken by members of the Society of built heritage in Kew in 1979-80. The selection of subject matter reflects the priorities of the period. The colour of some slides has degraded. St Ives, (later known as Elstree, and Little Elstree) was designed by the architect Francis R Barlow in c.1890. This plate was painted by J.J. Forrester in 1922. John James Forrester, the son of John Lamb Forrester and Maria Hexter, was an architect in Warrnambool in the early 20th century. He had an office in Kepler Street (1910) and in Koroit Street (1916). He lived in the house in Liebig Street that was formerly the first Savings Bank and was erected in 1860 (7A Liebig Street today). Forrester was a staunch member of the Presbyterian Church and was the co-architect for the re-building of the interior of St. John’s Presbyterian Church in Warrnambool after it was destroyed by fire in 1920. John Forrester was also a noted artist of his time and several of his works of art have survived. A landscape by him is in the possession of the Warrnambool and District Historical Society. This plate is one of two painted by Forrester that survive today.This plate, although damaged, is of interest because it was painted by John James Forrester, a Warrnambool artist from the early 20th century. This is a china plate showing a seascape painted by John James Forrester in 1922. It depicts a coastal scene of rocks, birds and sailing boats. The colours are in mauve/brown/ white tonings and are slightly opalescent. The plate has brown/grey handles with one broken and repaired. This pant suit belonged to Bernice Overend, a longtime Brighton resident. Bernice Adelaide Emily Lawn was born in Ballarat in 1911. In 1938 she married Acheson Best Overend (1909-1977), an early modernist architect in Melbourne whose notable designs include the heritage-listed Cairo Flats apartment building in Fitzroy. Bernice and Best made a home together in Brighton, raising their family at 80 Were Street. Their son Darren followed in Best's footsteps, becoming an architect, and in 1979 he and his wife Jenny bought a property just down the road from his childhood home - the heritage-listed 1881 Victorian mansion 'Chevy Chase' at 203 Were Street. Bernice lived in the house with Darren, Jenny and their three children. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church was designed by the architect William Wardell. Prior to the construction of the church, mass was conducted at the Daniel Home 'Narbonne'. The foundation stone was laid on 13/11/1804 by the Catholic Bishop of Melbourne, Rev. Dr. J. The Model Dairy was founded by the Kew pioneer, James Venn Morgan. The dairy had a number of different locations in Kew depending on the time period. Its final incarnation was on the north side of Cotham Road, between Ridgeway Avenue and Kent Street, Kew. The final factory was designed by the architects Bates, Smart and McCutcheon.Kew was a major milk producing district in the Nineteenth and early Twentieth centuries, with three major dairy farms lining the Yarra between Studley Park in the west and Burke Road in the east. In addition to these dairy producers, there were also a number of accredited dairy retailers in the suburb. The largest and most enduring of these was the Model Dairy founded by the Kew pioneer James Venn Morgan. Milk bottles that include the name of the producer or retailer are historically significant as they represent a period in Kew's history before the mass production of milk in the second half of the Twentieth Century. In February 1909 the Trinity Grammar School leased ‘Molina’, a property in Charles Street. ‘Molina’ had been built in 1872-73 to a design by architect Alfred Purchas, for the secular and private Kew High School. The building served as the headmaster’s residence and boarding accommodation. Kew High School had closed in 1908. David Lanyon undertook many aspects of mining progressing to become the underground boss of the New Chum United Mine. In 1894 he became a member of the Bendigo Stock exchange and a successful speculator. He then moved into a new home, "Raelwa" in Beech St., GoldenSquare.
