This postcard was sent by "O.G." to J. Gawler on 7 February 1915 from an Army camp in Egypt. The postcard appears to have been hung up by a thumb tack as there is a small hole at the top centre of the card. This item is representative of the letters and postcards that were sent home to war by servicemen during the First World War and was a way to maintain a connection to their loved ones during difficult and uncertain times. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in Jerusalem (May 1995). The post card was addressed to the President of Melbourne Legacy. It said: Dear David - Greetings from Jerusalem. I had the honour, a few days ago, as part of the 50th year Commemoration Services ending the European War, to lay a wreath on behalf of VAJEX (together with the Australian Ambassador to Israel) joined by the Military Attaches from many allied countries - the Ceremony was held at the Holocaust Centre, and it was a most memorable occasion. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in France. The postcard was addressed to the Legatee Chairman of the Comradeship Committee. Dated 3 Feb 1983. It is signed GRIFF, it says: The French experience I should have had years ago. I am in the DORDONGE after spending some days at LA ROCHELLE on the Atlantic coast. The provincial French are courteous, generous, helpful and so elegant. Work I did with my French mistress at the Wesley Church has paid great dividends although today may be tough. I give 40 children (aged 10-14) their first ever Scottish Country dance lesson. The goose hatched in March lives a normal farmyard life till October, then it is force fed for three weeks and then 'WHAM' and PATE. Next meeting at Norton - France! We've had 4 days ON Dartmoor, not IN Dartmoor. In view of our name, we keep a low profile so as not to be invited to stay!! Most of the Moor is a very beautiful place, especially around Widecombe-in-the-Moor! We're keeping well and should see you all in the middle of August. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in England. The postcard is a picture of the Trooping of the Colour in London shown as rows of Queen's guardsmen. It is addressed to Hugh Caffrey (?) at Legacy House. It is dated 15 June 1995. It says: "G'day Hughie. Recognise me. I'm behind the bloke in the hat in the back row. Had a wonderful VE-50 week of celebrations. The RAAF were really looked after, reserve seats and all. A further week at the old dome was terrific. People were wonderful to us. Have just returned from 21 days around Europe Fantastic. About the head around the British Isles and Ireland. Regards to all at Legacy, Cheers. It is addressed to Mr Lin Kirk, Chairman, Comradeship at Melbourne Legacy. It is undated and signed Reverend Caffrey. It says: " Fabulous holiday. Terrific night life. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in Austria. "Bozen mit Blick each Osten" which translates as "Bolzano with view to the east". It is addressed to Mr H Caffrey, Chairman Comradeship at Melbourne Legacy. It is not dated and is signed Brian Lucky Luscombe. It says: "While lunching on a balcony overlooking this lovely place, I thought of soup, sandwiches and scones and Melbourne Legacy. And then Mary said "have another glass of red". At 6000 lire a bottle it's not too bad. We escaped the Italian airline/train strike and are now safely in the land of the Sound of Music. Another 5 weeks of this summer in sunny Europe and I'll be back to annoy you. And you'd better have a new job for me. Regards. A postcard to the Comradeship Committee when a Legatee was travelling in Germany. It is addressed to Legatee A L Gray, Chairman of the Comradeship Committee and dated 20 September 1994 and signed Ted L. The postcard is a picture of three men drinking beer from glass beer steins, which seems to be what the writer is referring to in the text. It says: "Dear Laurie, The Oktoberfest scene recalled our Comradeship gatherings and you can put your own names to the players. Personally I never knew that Leigh I. was left-handed nor that "Fearless Fred" only pretended to be unafraid of alcohol. The 3rd person can remain the "unknown" Legatee - may he continue to enjoy his trinken. Please advise if the Committee wishes to replace its glassware. I may get my Commission - at last!!
