Newspaper cuttings of an article and accompanying photo in "The Herald" December 9, 1931. They are carrying the last sheaves of an oats crop stacked yesterday." The accompanying article, "Burnley's Long Career," describes the students activities and the history of the school. Photograph - Photograph - Annie Clarke's Ladies School, Gawler Street, 1970s
Anne Clarke was born in Devon around 1814 and arrived in Portland in 1854 aboard the "Francis Henty". She opened Portland's first "Ladies School" which she operated until 1891. Many young ladies from the Western District passed through the school, and in some cases, two generations of girls. It is thought that before coming to Australia, Anne taught at a school for the daughters of clergymen at Cowan Bridge, Lancashire, aptly named the Clergy Daughters' School. It was attended by the Bronte sisters and is said to have inspired the Lowood School in Charlotte Bronte's "Jane Eyre". Anne Clarke never married and died in Portland in 1892.Photographic print of a rephotographed photograph. Image of single storey building, front view, verandah, wooden shingle roof. Photograph, Humberstone's Royal Hotel Surrey Hills
Humberstone's Royal Hotel was a substantial 2-storey building on the corner of Canterbury and Broughton Road. The hotel was built in 1887 to replace an older hotel (Delany's Hotel) built further east in 1856. It was de-licensed in 1921 after a "Local Option Poll" and became Tower House Day & Boarding School under Miss Marion Beetson from 1922 until 1932. It was demolished in 1932. There were 25 students in the 1920's, mostly boarders from outside Surrey Hills and all primary school students. The school room was detached from the main building and there was 6 acres of playing area. The old bar was the business office, the girls' dormitory the old dining room. Marion Beetson was the teacher, Mary Beetson managed the household. Their father was an Indian Army officer. The younger children wore a school blazer with the T.H.C. badge on the pocket. Miss Susan Kelsall visited to give piano lessons and Prof. Kelsall taught French. Miss Marion Beetson died in Castlemaine on 8 February 1952. Article - Article - Women, Ballarat School of MInes: Women of Note; Bella Guerin, Educator and Activist, (1858 - 1923)
Julia Margaret (Bella) Guerin (1858-1923), feminist, political activist and teacher, was born on 23 April 1858. Her father was a Governor of Gaols and was so at Ballarat Gaol from 1860s to 1890.- Having studied at home to pass matriculation in 1878, Bella entered Melbourne University in 1881, the same year her brother Marco began at Ballarat School of Mines to study Metallurgy and Assaying. Bella became the first woman to graduate from an Australian University when she gained her B.A. from the University of Melbourne in December 1883, becoming M.A. upon application in 1885. She taught first at Loreto Convent, Ballarat, urging higher education scholarships for Catholic girls to produce 'a band of noble thoughtful women as a powerful influence for good'; then as Lady Principal of Ballarat School of Mines University classes from 1887-1890, resigning upon marriage. Returning to teaching from financial necessity she began to frequent suffragist circles from the mid 1890s. She also became very involved within the Labor Party. She wrote speeches for Vida Golstein, a campaigner for women's rights, the right to vote and stand for elections. In recognition of her time at Ballarat School of Mines, a Hall of Residence at Federation University, Mount Helen Campus has been named after her, Bella Guerin Hall of Residence. Tunnelling tradition dictates a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) cannot start work until it has been given a female name, a sign of good luck for the project ahead. This dates back to the 1500s when miners and military engineers working with explosives for underground excavation, prayed to Saint Barbara for protection. The TBMs working on the two West Gate extensions are named after two very prominent women working for the rights for women. They are named Bella (Bella Guerin) and Vida (Vida Goldstein)women of note, feminist, political activist, teacher, melbourne university, first female university graduate, loreto convent ballarat, lady principal of ballarat school of mines, 1887-1890, labor party, hall of residence, bella guerin hall of residence, federation university, mount helen campus, julia margaret guerin, bella guerin, governor of gaols, ballarat gaol, father, marco guerin, brother, ballarat school of mines, metallurgy, assaying, women's rights, vote for women, vida goldstein, west gate tunnels, tunnel boring machines, tbms, bella, vida -

Book, Arthur Catherall, Adventurers, Ltd, 1954
Adventurers, Ltd., was a band of Scouts, all tip-top chaps. they liked to challenge Scouts in neighbouring towns-just to see how good they were. Not one of the Associations they visited ever succeeded in beating Andy, Sam Dodds, Smithy, Fatty Leadfield and the rest, but some of the adventures that came along in the process nearly did! Andy and the haunted tower, for instance; and Dickie Goole and the crashed pilot on the mountain; and the dangerous adventure of the two men in the quicksand. Another first-rate Scouting story by this favourite author.Dust cover has an illustration of a boy scout attempting to cross a flooded river. The reverse of the dust cover has information regarding The Crown Library; a series of school and adventure books for boys and girls.fictionAdventurers, Ltd., was a band of Scouts, all tip-top chaps. they liked to challenge Scouts in neighbouring towns-just to see how good they were.
