Wal has dated the photo as 1948. "Alexander Colquhoun [Herald art critic 1914-1922 and feature writer for the Age 1926-1941] ... took private students in the first decade of the century, and one of these was Winifred Miles, who after her marriage in 1910 lived the remainder of her life in Ringwood. ... (She) began by doing charcoal studies of animals when she was in Balranald, but in later years moved to oils and then watercolours, travelling around Ringwood to find places to paint by means of a pony-driven governess-cart. David Armfield studied at the National Gallery School in the 1940s and turned to full time painting in 1965. RMIT printamking. He has won several art awards, including the Ramsay Prize - NGV School, the Redcliffe and in 1980 the Eltham Prize. Armfield is represented in the National Gallery collection, Art Gallery of NSW, Tasmanian Art Gallery, several regional art galleries across Australia as well as private collections. David Armfield first came to Eltham in the late 1903s on painting trips and used to camp on the banks of the Diamond Creed. He returned to Eltham in 1957 with his wife Joan who has subsequently become one of the district's potters, and built a mud brick house and studio in John Street on land adjoining Peter Glass. One of four bells that would have been fitted to the tram.Demonstrates a conductors communication bell made for use on tramcars. Brass Conductor Communication Bell, consisting of cast frame, bell, striker, bell pull part, one nut to secure the bell to the frame and two rivets securing for the bell pull part. Has the initials "TB" cast in both ends that were used to secure the bell to the roof - possibly indicating the "Tramway Board" manufacture.
