Photograph (item) - Students with school banner, Shakespeare Grove, 1963
Students sitting on the front steps of the main building holding the school banner, on the day of the opening of the Shakespeare Grove campus, 17 February 1963. The students are dressed in full school uniform including Bialik logo caps for the boys and Bialik logo berets for the girls. Please contact [email protected] to request access to this record. This photograph is culturally significant because it is the first professionally commissioned photographs of the school during its opening day at the Shakespeare Grove, Hawthorn school site. This is significant as the school officially opened an early learning centre (kindergarten) and primary school on this day 17 February 1963 after recently closing the Drummond street, Carlton campus. This is one of the first photographs taken at Bialik College's second school site where considerable investment was made by the community to build a larger school on a new campus with modern education facilities and more classrooms for the first time at 6 Shakespeare Grove Hawthorn.events, 1960s -

Most schools have arranged "Open Days" at which parents are expected to attend the school and visitors are cordially invited..." Newspaper Article 2: " The following schools have registered their "open Days" as published hereunder. It is possible that schools which have not informed the Board of Deputies might also have arranged "open Days" and should be contacted as to dates and times etc..." Newspaper Article 3: "Mr. Moshe Meretz arrived in Melbourne on Tuesday to take up his position as Headmaster of Bialik College. Mr. Meretz who is accompanied by his wife and five-year old son, is Israeli born and educated. He is a graduate of Teachers' Seminary institute in Haifa and was a teacher and headmaster of primary and more recently secondary schools in Hafia. Apart from his tecahing qualifications Mr. Meretz has a law degree from Tel Aviv branch of Hebrew University. Mr. Meretz was already at the college on Wednesday and was welcomed by the staff and pupils. Bialik College Council is confident that Mr. Meretz' presence in Melbourne will not only benefit the school but will have an impact on Hebrew education in the community as did that of his predecessor Mr. A. Photos include: Log building which the students constructed and used as a co-operative shop, Primary Class, Science class outside their classroom, Government meeting held in the outdoor theatre, Janet and Lawrence Nield. "Koornung School, Warrandyte was established by Clive and Janet Blake Nield in 1939, after they had visited progressive schools in Europe and America. They believed children should be given freedom to grow while learning to accept responsibility; that school should be a miniature democracy and education not a preparation for life but experience of life itself. A government of children and all staff (whatever their jobs in the school) met regularly, made the rules and dealt out punishment for breaking them. The few rules set down by staff related to health and safety, for instance, no pupils were allowed to go into the river without supervision. The school could not have been started at a worse time. Food rationing and coupons, petrol shortages and men at war limiting teaching staff made difficulties. It was an expensive school to run. Financial difficulties became more serious and eventually the school had to close in 1946. Efforts by the children and a Board of Management of notable people failed to save it. Janet Nield (M.A., Dip Ed.) was an inspired teacher of history. She was one of the few women at Melbourne University at that time to gain a Masters degree in history. The Nields left Melbourne to live in Sydney, Clive to work at Sydney University in lecturing in Education and particularly interested in Colombo Plan students. Janet devoted herself to children as a Lay Analyst. She was awarded the title of Training Analyst by a meeting of international psychoanalysts in Europe. - Pat Scott (Mrs Wynne Scott), a former member of staff at Koornung School Collection of five black and white photographs a, letter and descriptive material relating to Koornong School, Warrandyte showing various teachers and students and Connie and Alec Smith's studio.schools, koornong, warrandyte, danila vassilieff, lorna carter, adrian rawlins, teachers, janet nield, clive nield -

Booklet - Ephemera, Preparatory Technical School of Girls, c1919
The aims of the School was "To provide a Technical Training which will prepare girls for their future life's work. This school provides a continuity of study between the Primary and Senior Technical School (School of Mines) classes. This supplies a long felt want in giving a preliminary training for Technical Art, Craft, Commercial, and Industrial Education. It must, however, be distinctly understood that these Preparatory Classes do not fully qualify girls in any of the subjects, but rather discover their aptitude for some line of technical work and thoroughly prepare the to specialise in that particular branch.Prospectus for girls technical education at the Ballarat School of Mines and the Ballarat Technical Art Schoolgirls education, ballarat technical girls' school, ballarat school of mines, ballarat technical art school, commercial, leatherwork, photography, ticket witing, wood carving, drawing, metal work, lithography, dressmaking, millinery, industrial design, scholarships, shorthand, typewriting, ceramics, bookbinding, french polishing, wood inlay -
