The Ancient Order of Foresters, which originated in England in the mid 1700s, established its first branch (Court) in Victoria in 1849. Foresters was set up as a non-profit organisation, the founding principles of the Society being to provide financial and social benefits as well as support to members and their families in times of unemployment, sickness, death, disability and old age. This float was created by members of Friends of the Park, a group formed in 1987 against government proposals to turn the railway and reservation into a grand boulevard to service the proposed Sandridge City 'Bayside' development. Members worked for months to make the decorations, added to a trailer. During the festival procession sausages were BBQ'd on the trailer and handed out to the crowd. The weir was built in the 1840s to provide water to the ‘Ceres’ flour-mill, one of the first in Victoria. The falls were later to become known as Dight’s Falls after the owners of the mill. Later, a pumping station was built on the Kew side of the river, which pumped water uphill to a reservoir in Walmer Street that provided water to the Melbourne Botanical Gardens and to Albert Park Lake.
