These golf shoes belonged to Thomas Conway of Wodonga. He was an actives sportsman in the Wodonga community. He wore them when playing golf in Wodonga and surrounding district. Thomas was a son of Michael and Catherine Conway of Wodonga. He passed away in 2005. This item was donated by one of his sisters.These golf shoes belonged to a well-known member of the Wodonga community.A pair of black golf shoes. The shoes have a leather upper and composition soles. They are also fitted with a special golf spike in the sole to give improved grip. There are 7 spikes on the bottom of the front section of each shoe and 4 on each heel. After attending Eton College, Herbert Chermside attended the Royal Military Academy where he graduated at the top of his year and was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1870. After several postings and expeditions, including the Arctic in 1873, he was promoted to captain in 1882 and appointed to the British Army's intelligence staff in Egypt and given command of the Egyptian Army's 1st Battalion. He spent four years in Egypt. Promotions and consular appointments followed and eventually he returned to Britain. He was appointed in command of the Curragh Camp in Ireland, 1900. However, he was sent to South Africa to command the 14th brigade and the 3rd division during the Second Boer War. Late 1901 he returned to his position in Ireland and in 1902 he was appointed the first Post-Federation Governor of Queensland, Australia. He announced his retirement in 1904 and returned to Britain. He retired from the Army in 1907. Chermside was awarded the Companion of the Order of the Bath in 1886, Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1880, upgraded to Knight Commander of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1897 and Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1899. Nineteen local schools participated in the project which was co-ordinated by Hazel Mournay, and the two artists assisting were Michael Chanter and Richard Price. Daniel Robertson Brick Company provided the tiles and the completed amphitheatre was opened by the Member for Koonung, Mr Bruce Atkinson on Sunday 4th June 1995.A series of coloured photographs showing school children designing and decorating tiles to be used to pave the Nunawading Amphitheatre in 1995. Each school was given a year to research, design and paint tiles to fit a given shape. This letter book contains letters, sketch maps and plans and dates from 1920 to 1923. It came from the office of John William Crawley Junior, an engineer, architect and surveyor in private practice in Warrnambool and also the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1895 to 1935. His father, brother and son were also engineers and worked in that capacity or as the Shire Secretary for the Shire of Warrnambool, with the Crawley family recording a total of 132 years of service to the Shire. The letter book was passed onto John Crawley’s son, Rolf, the engineer for the Shire of Warrnambool from 1935 to 1968. It then came into the possession of Michael Hand who took over the private surveying business on Rolf Crawley in Warrnambool. The Warrnambool and District Historical Society acquired the letter book, along with several other Crawley ledgers, from the estate of Michael Hand. This letter book is of considerable significance as it contains letters and maps drawn up by John William Crawley, an engineer in the Shire of Warrnambool for 40 years. It will be very useful for researchers.This is a dark red hard- cover letter book of 1001 pages. The book has brown binding on the corners of the cover and on the spine. There is gold lettering on the spine. The inside of the cover is lined with a multi-coloured mottled pattern. The cover is stained and scuffed. The pages contain handwritten letters, sketch maps and plans and an alphabetical index at the front. There are three loose pages. Freemasons of the Southern Cross (Maldon) and Deepdene-Balwyn Masonic lodges joined forces to purchase and assemble 40 brand new mountain bikes for the Blue Light Youth Camp. The task started at 9am with bacon and eggs for breakfast and the last tyre was pumped up at 12:30 pm. Michael Williamson said the Youth Camp has a fleet of approximately 150 bikes which are serviced regularly and used almost every day, and will all eventually need to be replaced. On behalf of the Blue Light Youth Camp, Michael thanked everyone involved.
