White camisole with round neckline with 4 cm deep fine woven lace. Neckline is shaped into six sided effect. Short sleeves edged with the same lace. There are four pearl buttons behind a concealed front opening. Two groups of three pintucks are on either side of the centre front. There is an 8 cm deep peplum and a casing with a cotton drawstring tape to define the waistline. The St John Ambulance Association, which was founded in 1877 in England. Its first uniformed first-aiders were founded in 1887 as the St John Ambulance Brigade. These two have since been merged into a single association. St John Ambulance now have over 40 national organisations, many of which are affiliated with Johanniter International, and over 300,000 volunteers worldwide. The Order of St John owns the brand name in most countries (with the notable exception of India, which has a St John Ambulance organisation that is unconnected to the international movement). Logos vary in different countries but always contain the eight-pointed white Maltese cross as the essential identifier. Like the Order, St John Ambulance associations accept members of all religions. Their geographic organisation differs from the Order, and they have to contend with the differing national laws, medical practices and cultures of countries. Typed letter to R. J. Bartle, Esq., from D. O'Connor, Engineer and ?, Chief Engineer, of the National Roads and Motorists Association (N.S.W.) dated November 8, 1936. A plackett on the left hand side fastens with two metal press-studs, and a metal hook (probably a metal or cotton stitched eye, but this area has been damaged, and no eye is visible). Clothing. Elbow length, fine cream coloured kid leather gloves. Top edge is curved and is not hemmed. A plackett at the wrist is finely bound in the leather, and is 11.5 cm long. It fastens with three tiny 8 mm diameter pearl shell buttons, and bound button holes. The gloves are machine stitched, and it would appear that the long full-length side seam has been placed side by side, and then 'overlocked'.
