This pair of 19th century candleholders were presented to Nazareth House Ballarat by J.A.Chalk one of Ballarat's richest 19th century gold-mining entrepeneurs. J.A.Chalk was a partner in the Madam Berry Mines together with Martin Loughlin and William Bailey and was Manager of the Buninyong Estate Co., the Band and Barton Co., the Sebastopol Plateau Co., and the Prince of Wales and Bonshaw Co. mines in 1887. Chalk was a Quaker and benefactor to many Ballarat institutions. He arranged for the Council Chambers to be made available for meetings of the Society of Friends (Quakers) in the mid 19th century.One of a pair of large 19th century ornamented candle holders for use in the Chapel at Nazareth House Ballarat presented by 19th century Ballarat philanthropist and gold-mining magnate.The candleholders are in two separate sections the heavy lead-filled brass base with demountable seven-branched candleholders surmounting the base. The lower portion or base form a single candlestick when the branched top section is removed. "Today the Chalet lounges and hallways are stocked with a number of disparate furnishings of unknown provenance - table and chair settings... many ranging in styles from Edwardian and Art Deco periods. While they may appear to be original to the rooms, the items are not evident in any of the historic photographs surveyed in the course of this report, so their historical association with the Chalet does not appear to be strong and enduring. Some, including the Art Deco dining table and chairs in the Music Room ( MBC0038.2) ... appear to be domestic furnishings rather than those of a 'resort house'. Joynt's long association with Melbourne Legacy was celebrated at the Comradeship Hour at Legacy House on Tuesday 24 October 1989, two years after his death and just before the transfer of his uniform to the War Museum in Canberra. Menu for the luncheon held at "Powerhouse" to mark the end of the 1998 National Conference, with entertainment by 'Anything Goes' musicians, and piper Mr Ian McKenzie. The simplicity of the menu (Veal Parmigiana or Roast Pork, and Blackforest dessert) is in marked contrast with menus from the earlier years of Legacy which featured more courses and items described in French, with matching wines. The menu was probably produced and photocopied in-house rather than sent out for printing. Past President Legatee D.J. A photo of Legatee Larkin and a flag with a kangaroo and the words 'Hop In, You're Welcome'. The banner appears to have been signed by people. It is possibly from a military deployment though the details are not known. Appears to be a 'Dugout Night' where Legatees gather for a comradeship event close to Anzac Day in April. The date is approximately 1991 as it was stored with a lot of items from 1990 and 1991. The photograph show legatees posing with the uniform that belonged to Legatee Joynt after an address commemorating Donovan Joynt VC on 24th October 1989. The army uniform was at Legacy House just before it was donated to the Australian War Museum in Canberra. An article published in the Melbourne Legacy Bulletin about the event contained the address given by L/ Holdsworth (01599). Other photos at 01604 show Legatee Holdsworth can be seen reading from the album which was compiled about the life of L/ Joynt VC (Cat.No. 01588). A special luncheon was held for World War 1 widows as a lead up to "Legacy Week". Legatees dressed up as moustached French waiters to add a bit of humour to the day. Due to its success it was held for a number of years. Legatee waiters included Lucky Luscombe George Woodward and John Stevenson (President in 1993). This photo was used to promote the 1993 WWI widows luncheon. Newspaper clippings and a photo of Stan Savige's funeral from a file about the life of Stan Savige. The file contained documents pertaining to the creation of the book 'There goes a man' by W.B. Russell (catalogued separately) as well as these newspaper clippings and photo of Sir Stanley Savige's funeral. The newspaper features refer to the portrait by E Buckmaster submitted to the Archibald Prize competition (00634.4 and 00634.5, page 7 missing) as well as to the book (00634.6).
