In 1888 a company was formed to acquire and subdivide the land of the Mountjoy Brothers. The land totaled 197 acres and included Erskine House. The land colored red was that of the Mountjoys. The subdivision map was printed in 1889A paper map of the Mountjoy Estate Lorne , showing allotments, with their owners, and naming land use. It has four black and white line drawings , Erskine House, Mountain View’s, the Rapids, Erskine House sea view and Erskine Falls. The map is largely black and white with red and blue colouring. Gwen Gunn was a very active Legacy widow and organised Operation Rosemay for many years where Rosemary trays were prepared to give to the public on Anzac days. This short documentary film was produced by the Melbourne University Film Society in 1954 to display the hopeful possibilities of an International House in Melbourne. It was played from May 4th-6th in the Union House Theatre, along with several other films produced by the Society, possibly scheduled to coincide with the fundraising International House Fair the following weekend. The film stars broadcaster and author Allan Aldous as commentator, and the Malaysian female student is thought to be Rajeswary Thambiah of Malaysia. Celebrations for the 80th Anniversary of Legacy were held in the grounds of Government House in 2003. These photos show the Melbourne skyline in 2003 and views across MCG and the sports precinct. The note with the photos says: "Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function Over 1200 people recently attended Legacy's 80th Anniversary Function. The sun streaming through the picturesque garden surroundings at Government House contributed to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching to the success of the day. Many of the guests enjoyed catching up with friends and acquaintances that go back a long way. Some had not seen each other for decades and there was much excitement renewing old friendships. The guests were entertained by The Royal Australian Navy Jazz Ensemble and the MC was David Mann from Radio 3AW." See also 00989, 00990 and 00991. This is the home of Ernest Augustus Young (1891-1985) and Ruby Nichell Whitby (1892-1984) and their son Ernest Lance Young. Lance was born 24 March 1915 in Surrey Hills; after he married Beryl Mair. Electoral roll for 1937 gives the house name as 'Whitby Lodge'. Ernest and Ruby also had twins Clive and James who died in infancy. Buried at Box Hill Cemetery - M-*-0867 (family plot) This is part of a large collection relating to the Mair, Deakin and Young families. REF: Memoir of Laurie Newton (nee Young) - Her grandfather bought the land and had the house built. She remembers it as having pressed ceilings in some rooms and ornate fireplaces and tiles and leadlight windows in some rooms and doors with leadlight panels. Her grandfather was a keen gardener with an ornamental front garden and many vegetables and fruit trees in the back yard. Her grandfather sold the adjoining block (No 3 York Street), which had been used for growing flowers and vegetables, to John and Edna Jean. Reid. She also remembered that he extended the house and divided it into 2 flats, renting out the northern side for 20 years. Sold by Jellis Craig on 24 December 2010 - With formal living, dining, 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, garage/ample OSP. Land: 18.2m x 40.8m (60' x 134') approx. Large 2 storey house replaced the house.Colour photo of the street view of 5 York Street, Mont Albert. The house is Edwardian in style, constructed from weatherboard painted white with a red corrugated iron roof with simple finials. There is a small veranda with simple fretwork, lead-light feature windows to one, possibly two front rooms, one of which has a bay window. There is a garage set back at the side of the house with a concrete driveway on the south side of the house towards Mont Albert Road. The fence is low and constructed from roughly faced stone. ... Houses ...The main building and chalets were built by E. C. Mitchell of Stawell. He was given a 99 year lease by the shire to build his holiday house at the site of Borough Huts. David and May Mitchell took over ownership of the house and chalets. The women in the photo are May and Isabel Mitchell and the man is David Mitchell. The chalets were called "Flappers Roost", "Bower of Innocence" and "Last Resort". The two copies of the photo are taken from slight closer in and are not as clear and do not show the entire third chalet.The photo shows a collection of old buildings. Two women are standing in front of a car and a man is standing a short distance from them. A second car is parked between the main building and the huts. The building to the far right of the photo is painted in a cream colour and has a tin chimney. The other buildings are three small huts or chalets. A newspaper article from 1977 that shows a junior legatee practicing archery at the Christmas Party held at Government House and hosted by the Governor, Sir Henry Winneke and his wife. The boy was Adrian Childs, 7 years old, from Frankston. The article was cut from the newspaper and pasted into a scrapbook. For many years Legacy kept scrapbooks of press clippings that related to their work and publicity. This image is one of a series of photographs taken by Melbourne based photographers Stevenson and McNicoll who visited Bacchus Marsh and its nearby districts between September and November 1883. The house in the image is located at 82 Main Street Bacchus Marsh and as of 2024 is still occupied as a residence. The house was built in 1860 by William Watson for William Grant who leased the property to various tenants. From 1867 it was mainly leased to local doctors. The property stayed in possession of the Grant family for many years after this and was leased to many residents of Bacchus Marsh. The identity of the people in this 1883 photograph has not been established.Small sepia 'carte de viste' style unframed photograph on card with gold border framing photograph. He was President of the Borneo Students' Association in Melbourne, and took part in the IH Student Club, formed in the first year of student residence. It was during this period that a number of significant improvements were made to roads and new bridges constructed within the shire that remain in place as of present day (2022). In many situations, the photos provide a tangible visible record of infrastructure that existed throughout the early days of the Shire.
