Whyte travelled to Hawaii in 1919 spending 6 months at Waikiki learning how to surf. He purchased 4 solid redwood timber surfboards on the beach at Waikiki and brought them back to Australia. Plaque - Missions to Seamen Harbour Lights Guild, memorial to Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, Oct 1933
This tablet was originally erected at the Victorian Seamen's Institute, corner Nott and Beach Streets, and was relocated to the new Mission building, corner Beach Road and Swallow Street, in 1937. Several years prior to demolition of the building in October 1995, this tablet was removed and stored, eventually being donated anonymously to the PMH&PS.. It commemorates her service since helping to found the Harbour Lights Guild.Missions to Seamen Harbour Lights Guild memorial to Alice Sibthorpe Tracy (1933). The border of this tablet is made up of small blue tiles. The inscripture is set in a light stone face. which is in two halves, bordered by a rectangle of small gold-coloured stones. Surrounding is a mosaic in various shades of blue stones. A small red cross is set in the centre top. Extremely heavy for ot's size'To the glory of God, and sacred to the memory of Alice Sibthorpe Tracy, one of the founders of the Ladies' Harbour Lights Guild, of which she was Honorary Treasurer for 23 years. This wetsuit was worn by surfer and 2000 world champion, Sunny Garcia (Haw), It was cut off Sunny when he collapsed on the beach during his heat of the 2004 Rip Curl Pro event at Bells Beach. As the Age reported at the time: "One who left the water in unhappier circumstances was three-time Rip Curl Pro winner Sunny Garcia, who forfeited his heat with American Taylor Knox because of a migraine-like condition that saw him taken to Geelong Hospital for tests. Garcia, who was leading the heat, rode in with nine minutes remaining and appeared to collapse on the beach, holding his head in his hands." This wetsuit was worn during the prestigious Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach. It is a rare artefect from a major medical emergency at a world professional surfing contest.Sunny Garcia's wetsuit. The article relates the journalist's visit to Phillip Island, starting from Melbourne and describing features along the way, then at San Remo on mainland side of Phillip Island bridge, then Newhaven on the other. Other places visited include the main town of Cowes, the jetty and beach there, and the Nobbies (Point Grant), with views of the Seal Rocks offshore through telescope at the Nobbies. The writer also visited Summerland beach, described as a surf beach, with penguin and mutton bird rookeries. While not specifically referring to the Penguin Parade, the writer says the spectacle of seeing the penguins coming ashore is not to be missed.
