Photograph - Overhead Track lighting Nicholson St Coburg, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), 1960
Photo shows extensive track lights on the left side of the single-track Nicholson St East Coburg tram line with W2 class tram 473? inbound on route 1 just to the north of Grant St. This section of track was considered dangerous and to alleviate the problem of inbound or southbound tramcars not being visible well in advance to northbound motorists, the MMTB installed the track lights. The Chief Engineer at the 24/3/1960 meeting of the Board advised of the scheme that the track lights would be progressively switched on in advance of a southbound tram. Functional object - Run Number Plate, Melbourne & Metropolitan Tramways Board (MMTB), AVM type, 1980's
Set of 2 run number plates used for the vehicle identification system used in the AVM. Item was pushed into a slot of a reader which then recognised the identification through the series of holes on the left hand side. Fitted with metal strips, riveted on, to enable the card to be slotted into the holder by the crew member and then withdrawn when not required. Understood that the tram carried one of these at one end and then another without the holes at the other end. Number has been engraved into the plastic sheet and then painted in black. Used to identify the depot and "run number" or timetable that the tram was running on, two in each tram, to enable monitoring by inspectors and crews. System introduced by the MTA during the second half of the 1980's. These two particular plates have details on how to be used in trams and they were used for transporting trams to and from the workshops. Has the letters T & B interwoven with the words "Tramway Board" on the base. The Tramway Board took over the operation of the Melbourne cable tram system in July 1926 and operated them until the advent of the MMTB in November 1919. Has been stamped with the name O J King or D J King on the rear.
