The "Todd brothers" are understood to have been Paddy Todd and his brother Milton Todd. Anna Woods, 1848-1920, was a daughter of James Burns Woods and his wife Anna, née Coates. The Woods family migrated to Victoria in 1864. In 1974, Anna married Ewen Rankin, who held land adjoining her father's property near Linton. Ewen and Anna build a house which they called 'Glenree'. Anna and Ewen Rankin had eight children - Catherine (Kate), James, John, Anna, Mary, Lucy, William (Bill) and Ewen. This letter of sympathy is written to the widow of William Ferrier who rescued Captain Mylius and another seaman from the shipwreck, La Bella, at Warrnambool. Leonard Robertson, from Auckland, was II Mate of the La Bella. The letter was written from the Marine Dept. Queensland. Many newspaper accounts narrate the rescue and evidence given at the Marine Court of Inquiry. A book "Leonard Robertson, the Whangaroa & La Bella"/Jack Churchouse was printed. William Ferrier was born in Warrnambool and it is reported that he was a member of the lifeboat crew and served some years in the lighthouse service. During the La Bella rescue Ferrier used his dinghy, as he was an experienced fisherman of 25 years old. Ferrier, moved to Queenscliff at some stage and died at the Geelong hospital after having a seizure at sea. Ferrier's 15 years old son was having his birthday and fishing with him at the time. He was survived by his widow and 13 children. Otto Bayer who had informed Robertson of Ferrier's death was a crew member of the lifeboat. The site of the La Bella wreck lies in Lady Bay Warrnambool, at La Bella Reef - named after the fact. It is sad to think that we are all fading away and looking back I can see Bill Ferrier out in his boat at the La Bella it brings it all back to my mind as I write. A good man, and sailorman, is gone but never forgotten. Again expressing my deepest sympathy to you all Believe me, Yours Sincerely Leonard Robertson.This item is of historical significance in relation to the La Bella shipwreck as it is written and signed by a survivor and witness of the rescue. It is a single letter to the wife of the hero William 'Bill' Ferrier. The Ferrier family have a long social history with Warrnambool and Ferrier Drive is named in honour of the hero. The letter front is written on a lined and yellowed paper that has been repaired. The repair runs from top to bottom and has been done with cello tape. A small repair runs across the middle a couple of centimetres from the top and for approximately four centimetres down the middle. There are some small tears to the edges, particularly on fold creases. There are small brown age spots to peripheral areas. This is a sympathy letter from Leonard Robertson, II Mate and survivor of the La Bella to the widow of William (Bill) Ferrier rescue hero on his death. Inscribed in blue ink: "OWNER. G. In 1960, at public events commemorating the Centenary of Kew, the Mayoress, Mrs Doris Dickinson wore an evening dress, elbow-length white kid gloves and a scrolled silver necklace studded with cubic Zirconias. The Historical Society now hold all three items in its collection. The dress and gloves were donated by Judith Goodes, and this necklace by Janet Webster, twin daughters of Doris and William (Bill) Dickinson. Janet Webster recounts that she had purchased the necklace at a store in Collins Street and loaned it to her mother to wear at these civic events. This box held two rounds of 76mm Arm DC. These rounds were used in guns mounted on either Saladin Armoured cars, or, Fire Support Vehicle A.P.C. M113 in Vietnam. They used the L17A3 in practise. The projectile was filled with a mixture of explosives ROX and TNT for better blast effect. The rounds came assembled as quick firing in a cardboard tube, 2 tubes to a crate (Box). William Frederick (Fred) Jennings, the oldest son of William Jonathan and Matilda Jennings (née Michell) was born in 1901. He became a policeman and was stationed at Coburg for several years before dying suddenly in 1940, leaving his widow Elsie (née Egan) with nine children. Madge's daughters, Molly and Isobel both wore the veil at their weddings in 1938 and 1945. Donor is granddaughter of bride. The letter from the immigration and Labour Bureau revolves around J.W.Pierce getting his sons wife passage to Australia. The son is also J.W.Pierce No 261 21st Batt AIF who was in France. His wife’s name was Hazel whom he married in late 1916. James returned home in 1919, there is no records in his service documents as to his wife getting passage to Australia. Mary May was born in Bedfordshire, England in 1839 and migrated to Victoria with her parents, brothers and sisters in 1852. She married Ambrose Murrell in 1855, and they had seven children. Mary and Ambrose Murrell bought the Victoria Hotel in Linton in 1881. After Ambrose died in 1891, Mary continued to run the hotel with the assistance of her daughter Caroline, but it is understood that around the time Caroline married in 1910, Mary sold the hotel and bought the Linton Newsagency. It is not clear whether she managed the newsagency, as it was run by her son William (Bill) Murrell from about 1912, and later by his daughter Carrie Murrell. This family history book was published as a family record of the Ah Chow family. A limited number of copies were printed. Thomas William (Bill) Ah Chow was a Chinese-Australian soldier, farmer, fire lookout and legendary bushman of East Gippsland in Victoria. Many Chinese came to the Victorian gold rush in the 1850s to seek their fortune at the Omeo and Cassilis diggings. Many of the immigrants later settled and integrated into their local communities working as farm labourers, tending market gardens, making furniture, running grocery stores and cafes or practising Chinese medicine. Thomas William "Bill" Ah Chow of Bruthen, Victoria attempted to enlist early in the War but was rejected for being "not substantially of European origin". Undeterred, he reapplied and was accepted in June 1917. During his service with the 5th Battalion, he was wounded at least three times. After the War, Bill returned to Bruthen where he drove sheep, worked cattle and eventually assisted in the building of roads through the area. He became a Forestry Commission fire-spotter and built a hut called 'Moscow Villa' in 1942. He lived in the hut during the summer months and in winter, returned to his family in Ensay. Whenever there was fire danger, he rode his horse up to the fire tower on Mt Nugong and acted as look-out. Bill worked for the Forestry Commission for more than twenty years and came out of retirement to continue his duties when no suitable replacement could be found. Bill died in 1967 and is buried in Omeo. Moscow Villa still stands and is a popular camping site This is a useful reference item. As a family history it is detailed and contains useful copies of personal documents. Bill Ah Chow, along with the Ah Chow family were well known in Orbost and East Gippsland. This booklet is a testament to his life. A soft covered 97pp book with a cream cover. On the front is a coloured photograph of a Chinese man in traditional robe and hat. On the back cover is Moscow Villa. It contains information, copies of 1949 photographs, documents, hand -written letters and a will. Henry John (Jack) Holmes of Ascot was the eldest son of Henry Smerdon and Edith (nee Pickford) Holmes and brother to William Smerdon [Bill], David Coghill and Elizabeth (m Chatham) On his return from serving in WW2, Jack with his father's help took up a Soldier Settler option and settled at Derrinallum on a portion of Mout Elephant. The holding was named "Launchley Park". The people are identified as Mr Walter Bonwick and his sons. The photo was taken in 1936. Walter Hugh Bonwick (1899-1964) was an engineer. He married Christina Erica Strom (1893-1984) in 1924. Her parents were Herman Strom and Mary Eadington Rule Pyatt. Christina served as a staff nurse in WW1. She enlisted on 8 May 1917 and embarked from Melbourne on board RMS Somali on 30 June 1917; she returned to Australia on 17 July 1919. Her diary is digitised on the Australian War Memorial website, along with a typed transcript. Worked as a local preacher before being ordained in 1887. Appointed to Sandhurst in 1887 before being sent as Conference Evangelist to Tasmania, where he conducted missions. Married Gertrude Lily Abey (1872 - 1941) in 1891. Returned to Victoria in 1893 and served at Kerang, Maldon, Shepparton, Flemington & Essendon, Collingwood, Bendigo, Albert Park, Brunswick, Box Hill. Considered a ‘worthy’ councillor, William [Bill] Wishart was ‘blunt’ in words and actions during his period of civic service. He was concerned with a picturesque Kew. This included street lighting, macadamised roads and improved access to Melbourne. Often accused of being German, he asserted his Australian birth and Scottish heritage. He was a strong advocate for women’s rights, believed in compulsory voting, favoured prison reform, opposed religious instruction in State schools, betting including horse racing, Home Rule, alcohol and sought to establish a tourist bureau. Cr. Wishart was ‘unanimously’ supported to nominate for the vacated seat of Richmond in Victoria’s Legislative Council. He narrowly lost the vote. After a sudden death, he was buried with Presbyterian rites in the Boroondara General Cemetery.Arthur Henry Dear was an employee of the City of Kew, acting as Hall Keeper of the Kew Recreation Hall in Wellington Street, and later the new Kew City Hall in Cotham Road. Their depot was on the corner of Main Rd and Snodgrass St, Pakenham. When Bill's younger sons Ken and Ron, acquired the business in 1994 the business was renamed Hermon's Rainbow Removals, which remains in operation today. 1. The Album was compiled by Nancy McHaffie late 1990's, with the assistance of Edith Jeffery's, with her book "Garden of Memories" and extensive knowledge of Phillip Island. The Cemetery lies back from the road and is surrounded by Manna Gums, rare Peppermint Gums, Blackwoods and other native trees. In all 25 acres of land were set aside as Crown Land in the land settlement of 1868. Annie died in 1940 aged 69 years and was the wife of Augustus who died 1946 aged 76 years. He was the son of George Smith who arrived on Phillip Island about 1869. She became interested in community affairs and was the first to start the Girl Guides. She was President of the CWA and foundation member of the Golf Club. Margaret with her husband William (Bill), were tireless workers for the Children's Hospital along with many other worthy causes. Margaret died on November 25th, 1982 aged 75. Information provided by Ron Preston of Linton: "The day the plane landed in Linton Park / late 20s. Fairbanks and Harrison operated a garage in Sussex St opposite Bryant's shop. Fairbanks was married to Carrie Murrell's sister Dorrie and William (Bill) Harrison was married to Dulcie Nicol. Among other things that the garage sold were ASTOR RADIOS. To promote ASTOR RADIO a Gypsy Moth double seater aircraft flew low over towns to advertise. ASTOR RADIO was written under both wings. by Boltes) staying overnight.
