In 1880, the Melbourne Benevolent Asylum launched an appeal to raise funds to relocate away from the inner city. The location in North Melbourne was considered a great risk for the residents, particularly the 'old and feeble', in the event of an epidemic. In 1887, the secretary to the Premier of Victoria wrote to the Asylum, suggesting Frankston as a possible alternative to North Melbourne. The Asylum committee considered Frankston to be too far away. The Royal Commission into Charitable Organisations (1890) strongly recommended Cheltenham as the preferred location but the government failed to act on that recommendation. Former Asylum committee member, Mr James Hingston, bequeathed £25,000 to the Asylum on his death in 1902. After many more years of toing and froing, the foundation stone for the new asylum at Cheltenham was laid in 1909. It was almost two years later that the transfer of residents from North Melbourne to Cheltenham began. The move happened in stages over three days, with the first group of residents to move to Cheltenham being 125 women from the invalid wards. The Asylum continued to operate throughout the 20th Century and, in 1970, was renamed the Kingston Centre. The focus of services also changed. Proceeds to charity. The 1974 catalogue states, "We are grateful to the late Dick Ovenden for his inspiration to hold an annual Art Competition with emphasis on the local environment. Entries this year have exceeded our expectations to an extent that late entries could not be accepted. The late Dick Ovenden suggested a competition for the best painting of Local Environment. We have donated $200 as the prize and the picture becomes the property of the Zone, and several Honourable Mentions to be selected by Sir William Dargie. The Artists select their Competition entries. Zone Lions clubs of Bennettswood, Box Hill, Forest Hill, Nunawading, Ringwood and Vermont are appreciative of support from the artists and thank the public for its continued interest."

The Northern District School of Nursing opened in 1950 in to address the issues around nurse recruitment, training and education that had previously been hospital based. The residential school was to provide theoretical and in-house education and practical training over three years. The students would also receive practical hands-on training in the wards of associated hospitals. The Northern District School of Nursing operated from Lister House, Rowan Street, Bendigo. R.S.L. is the Returned and Services League of Australia, a member based charity founded in 1916, and the largest veterans' charity in Australia. It provides a support network and community for veterans and their families. They have a commemorative service each year on 25th April, ANZAC Day.The Mt Beauty RSL committee members in 1949 is a list of people living in Mt Beauty at the time and who were working as a support team for veterans and their families. Frank Wright was a renown resident of Smeaton, where he was born. He lived at Laura Villa, and attended Smeaton State School. His father William was a gold miner and his mother's name was Sarah. Their family won many singing and instrumental awards. Frank was tutored by Percy Code and was awarded a gold medal for the highest marks in the ALCM examinations in the British Colonies at the age of seventeen years. He became the Australian Open Cornet Champion by the age of eighteen. A year later, Frank conducted the City of Ballarat Band, and later the Ballarat Soldiers’ Memorial Band. He formed the Frank Wright Frisco Band and Frank Wright and his Coliseum Orchestra. These bands won many South Street awards, and Frank as conductor won many awards in the Australian Band Championship contest. In 1933 Frank Wright sailed to England to conduct the famous St Hilda’s Band and was appointed in 1934 as the Musical Director of the London County Council (the GLC or Greater London Council), where he organized many amazing concerts in most of the 150 parks, in and around the London district. He was also responsible for some of London’s major concerts at Kenwood, the Crystal Palace and Holland Park. He was made Professor of Brass and Military Band Scoring and Conducting and was a Fellow of the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Frank was often invited to adjudicate Brass Band Championships around Europe, in Australia, including South Street and in New Zealand. Frank was awarded an M.B.E. in 1967. The Frank Wright Medal at the Royal South Street competition is awarded to an individual recognized as making an outstanding contribution to brass music in Australia.A printed black and white programme with a yellow printed cover. The first Bendigo Easter Fair was held on 10th and 11th April, 1871 and remains one of Australia’s longest running annual community events taking place over the Easter long weekend. Its purpose was to raise funds in aid of two local charities; The Bendigo Hospital, and The Bendigo Benevolent Asylum. The fair features events throughout the City with celebrations culminating in a parade on Easter Sunday. The parade features a variety of commercial and community groups including a large processional dragon which has been an integral part of the annual parade since 1892. The three principal golden dragons featured over the past 130 years are Loong (1892–1970), Sun Loong (1970–2019) and Dai Gum Loong (2019–present) which are housed at the Golden Dragon Museum in Bendigo. The Bendigo Easter Fair Society is custodian of the Bendigo Easter Fair and continues to support the City of Greater Bendigo’s largest festival. Each year the City produces a poster to advertise the upcoming fair and this one from 1943 reflects the war time sentiment which existed by featuring service men and women as well as the Chinese dragon.
