Drawing (Pastel): Nicholas Nedelkopoulos (b.1955 Melb, AUS), Nicholas Nedelkopoulos, The Sneeze, 1995
Nicholas Nedelkopoulos is an established artist, his work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the National Gallery of Australia and in numerous International and Australian Public and Private Collections. His work has been included in major historic exhibitions: the National Gallery of Australia's Federation touring exhibition, The Australian Bicentennial Folio and Victoria's 150th Anniversary exhibition curated at The State Library of Victoria and National Gallery of Victoria. He has a Diploma of Fine Arts from Victorian College of the Arts, a Master of Fine Art from the University of Melbourne (Victorian College of the Arts) and has a Doctorate from Monash University. Nedelkopoulos' work is based strongly in graphic tradition which can be seen throughout all of his media.'The Sneeze' alludes to a feverish response, an irritation, a period of temporary discomfort, or a sign of sickness. On a visit to Eltham in 1995 Nedelkopoulos became aware of the disquiet felt by many residents because local government was not in the hands of elected representatives. 'The Sneeze' is an allegorical work, which serves as a reminder of this period in our municipal history. Nedelkopoulos has constructed an environment similar to a theatre set in which every element is a symbol to be deciphered. Whether you read the red-nosed figure as democracy being challenged by the political circumstance, as representing the unelected commissioners surrounded by the criticism of the community, or as another player in the story, to unravel the meaning of individual elements will provide direction and add weight to your interpretation. Without knowledge of the artist's intention the work can convey quite straightforward messages and responses. For example, the misery of hayfever in Spring, or how germs spread from a single sneeze. Such ideas are relevant and provide the metaphoric basis for a more in-depth analysis.Pastel drawing on paper. Image depicts a small black figure with a small monkey on a lead. Sculpture: Peter WEGNER (b.1954 NZ - a.1958 AUS), Peter Wegner, Disbelief (from the 'Black Saturday' series), 2010
The 'Black Saturday' bushfires were a series of bushfires that ignited across the Australian state of Victoria on and around Saturday, 7 February 2009. It was Australia's worst ever natural disaster. The fires occurred during extreme bushfire-weather conditions and resulted in Australia's highest ever loss of life from a bushfire: 173 people died and 414 were injured as a result of the fires. This work is by a local contemporary artist with a national and international reputation for figurative and portrait works. The 'Black Saturday' series is a powerful investigation of emotion and grief as experienced by many Nillumbik residents during the 2009 'Black Saturday' bushfires. A cluster of bronze figurines either stand alone or embrace in groups. Their expressions and gestures of despair are made more pertinent with the raw like application and surface treatment of the material used. The 'Black Saturday' series is a challenging work, but one that encourages healing, connection and empathy. Solitary figure sitting on rock/log with elbows resting on knees and hands on head. Face looking down in despair. Surface treatment is textured. Dark metallic brown colour with figure starting to turn a green patina.Sticker underside of sculpture 'No. 205640 (AP)'wegner, figurine, bronze, black saturday, sculpture -

They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. Textile - Bookmark, Fuzzy Wuzzy of New Guinea1943
The poem "Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels" was written by H. (Bert) Beros and published in the Courier Mail (Brisbane) on 31 October 1942.This poem gained popularity and was widely read and then published privately by Beros running to several editions. The bookmark produced in 1943 is an example of how revered and popular in the Australian public mind the New Guinea natives became. This bookmark is significant in its association with the popular legend of the loyalty and self sacrifice of the New Guinea natives popularly termed Fuzzy Wuzzy. with the added sobriquet of Angels, in their support of the Australians in New Guinea in World War II without which Australia may not have been able to halt the Japanese advance.Painted figure of New Guinea native on felt marker with caption and date 1943Fuzzy Wuzzy of New Guinea 1943 colour printed on brown feltnew guinea, aif, fuzzy wuzzy, bookmark, kokoda track, world war ii, australia -

City of Ballarat
Artwork, other - Public Artwork, Angelo Bertozzi, Hercules by Angelo Bertozzi, circa 1880
Thomas Stoddart (1828 - 1905) bought 12 white marble statues during a visit to Italy. Stoddart arranged for them to be shipped to Victoria and placed on pedestals of Sicilian marble and on bases of Victorian granite. These statues were unveiled in the gardens on Queen Victoria's birthday, 24th May, 1884. His intention was for the statues to adorn and add interest to the gardens. Stoddart's gift inspired the moves to make Ballarat a "City of Statues". Hercules was is one of the best-known heroes in Greek and Roman mythology. Hercules was renown for his great strength and courage, here he is depicted raising his mighty club and wearing a lion skin as a trophy. The artwork is of aesthetic and historic significance to the people of BallaratMarble figure of a man with raised club and wearing a lion skin around his loinsHerculeshercules, stoddart, botanic gardens -
