The numbers listed in this directory are under the heading of districts and the listings within the districts are again sub-listed under the various towns. So in the Warrnambool district there are listings under Winslow, Panmure, Orford, Port Fairy. Wangoom etc.This directory is of some importance as the names and addresses of those with telephones in 1973 in the local areas are listed. Most of the listings of the smaller towns give the names of the homes and properties. 2 Souvenir booklets from the official opening of Bundoora Public Hall on 1st June 1968. One is in original unopened commemorative envelope featuring the coat of arms of the Shire of Diamond Valley. The brochure opens to a 3 page double sided document outlining the history of the original public hall in Bundoora, describing the new building and also shows a plan of the same. Accompanied by a 9 page foolscap list of guests at the opening. Entries are mostly typed, but some have been added by hand. Records the attendees at and program for opening of Bundoora Public Hall. Provides a list of active Ballarat trams operated by the State Electricity Commission of Vic, dated 7-11-1967. Notes that there are 15 ST's (Single trucks or four wheel trams) and 10 bogies - all larger trams. Also records that all destination rolls were black on white, changed over from white letters on a black background. Flooding of the Yarra Valley, including that section of the Yarra bordering Kew and Kew East in the north and west of the municipality, was a regular occurrence. Extreme flood events of the Yarra River are recorded to have occurred in 1891, 1901, 1916, 1923 and 1934. The Municipality of Kew's response to these floods was to enact planning decisions restricting residential development in flood prone areas following the floods of 1916, 1921 and 1934. While floods continued after the development of the Upper Yarra Reservoir (construction 1948-57), the regularity and extent of these inundations diminished. During the nineteenth century, the land abutting the south side of the Yarra in Kew was devoted to dairy farming. In the twentieth century, before and after the construction of the Eastern Freeway, much of this low-lying area was used as golf courses and public parks.Late example of the capacity of the Yarra Valley at Kew to flood, even though drainage works and the Upper Yarra Reservoir had reduced their regularity.Original black and white print photograph of the low-lying land at East Kew under floodwater on 16 May 1974. A list of donors who had contributed to Legacy's special appeal for funds in 1956. It was the first time Legacy had asked the public for donations because of the needs to refurbish their new premises. It was in a folder of documents about the history of Legacy which appears to have been mostly compiled by Legatee Cyril Smith as he has many hand written notes on miscellaneous pieces of paper (some are envelopes addressed to him). Some notes were typed up into a summary of the History of Legacy. Also documents relating to the first time Legacy approached the public for donations in September 1956, including newspaper articles that were reprinted, a schedule of information that was approved to be released to the press, and a list of potential donors that was circulated to Legatees in the hope they could contact the ones they knew personally or professionally. The call for public donations was partially due to the purchase of the Dureau building and the need to modify the building for Legacy's needs. The documents from this folder have been added in seperate records (see 01262 to 01281). The folder was part of an attempt to capture history of Legacy, generally from the 1950s.The documents provide an insight into the working of Legacy, especially in the 1950s. This is a 1923 booklet containing information on the Telephone Exchanges and the lists of subscribers in the areas of Geelong, Camperdown, Casterton, Hamilton, Mortlake, Portland and Warrnambool. Telephones were in use in Victoria as early as the 1870s with the first Telephone Exchange facility established in Melbourne in 1880. In 1890 the first Telephone Exchange in Warrnambool was established with 35 subscribers. In 1912 the first automatic Telephone Exchange for public use was established in Geelong. This was the second established in the British Empire. This booklet is of considerable importance as it lists all the telephone subscribers in the Warrnambool area in 1923. It is a great research tool as it gives not only the addresses of the subscribers but also in many instances their occupations and business names and in the areas around Warrnambool the names of the properties at that time. This is a soft-cover booklet of 104 pages. It has a dark grey cover with printed information on both sides. It was published in 1923. The pages are stapled together and contain lists of Telephone Exchanges, information on the distances from one Exchange to another in the area and the rates of charges for telephone trunk lines. It also has a list of subscribers in the Camperdown, Geelong, Hamilton and Warrnambool areas. The front cover has a small piece missing at the right hand side edge.
