Albert Richardson had a life long interest in Bendigo's mining. He wrote broadly about the practical aspects of mining and the history of many of the mining companies. One handwritten and typed copies (3 of page 1, 3 of page 2, 2 of page 3 and 2 of page 4). Soon after the flooding of the mine commenced in June 1910, tributers worked the upper levels. By 1913 the Company found it was uneconomic to allow tributers to continue working in the upper levels. Four Bendigo men, Ernest Smith, David Holden, Jack Harrison and David Patullo worked the mine during the Depression. They did well. The initial partnership in a quartz crushing plant between Henry Koch, Simon Albert and Charles Wallin was dissolved in 1860 with Koch becoming the sole owner. In 1866 the crushing plant consisted of a 50 hp engine and 48 stamping heads capable of crushing 600 tons of quartz per week. By 1902 there were 72 stamps and this was by far the largest crushing plant in the area, serving many quartz mines. Henry Koch (1800-1889) was a German sailor who signed off when his ship reached Melbourne in 1851. Having heard of the gold discovery he proceeded to Bendigo where he was initially employed in puddling in the Myers Flat area. He was soon employed and then made partner in a quartz crushing plant that he became sole owner of in 1860. He was also landlord at the British and American Hotel and the Silver Mines Hotel. HE also started the Perseverance United gold claim. He married Anna Maria Theresia Heinz in 1857. In 1872 he sold the crushing plant for 75,000 pounds and took his family back to Germany. Victorian Minister for Mines Angus McKay introduced a Bill, which forbade the employment of children in the mines, introduced the eight hour day, called for the licensing of engine drivers and instructed mine owners to install safety devices on mine cages. Newspaper article: 'Years in the Mines". Article details the life of an Eaglehawk man who spent 22 years working in Bendigo mines and who is celebrating his 80th birthday (no date on article) Wilfred worked at the Unity Mine in Long Gully, when the Prince of Wales, visited it. He also worked at the Red White and Blue, Big Deborah and South Virginia (between 1920 and 1942) He stated worked as a shoveler and then learnt to bore holes and fire with explosives. At the South Virginia, there were three shifts working the shaft. Each shaft shift had two miners and one shoveller and the mine has 20 or 30 workers.bendigo, mining, wilfred watson

Koch's Pioneer Quartz Mining and Crushing Company, No Liability Long Gully Bendigo Share Certificate. Distinctive Numbers 48164 to 48213 in the name of William Grattan of St Kilda. Certificate Number 2930. Dated 7th December 1911. Signed by ?, Hugh Boyd, Directors and J. H. Craig, Manager. On the back is a map of the lease showing where the shaft is and a measurement of 450 yards from one side of the lease to the other beside the shaft. The lease is an irregular shape. Adjoining leases mentioned are Windmill Hill Co., G. Lansell's Sandhurst Mine, Cornish United Co. and the Hercules & Energetic Co. Arthur T. Walker, M. S. printed at the bottom. Four-page typed document plus location map. The United Hustlers and Redan mine was located in the North Bendigo, Long Gully area on the Hustlers line of reef. The lease was 153 acres and included Holdsworth, Holmes, Havilah Roads and Wood Street. The Redan shaft was 1,830ft and the South or K.K. Shaft was 1,960 ft. Poppet legs steel 71 ft high. Four-page typed document with information on the Great Extended Hustlers mine on the Hustlers line of reef. Formed in 1865 closed down in 1925. The mine was located a little to the south of the intersection of Hustlers Road and Anderson Street, North Bendigo. The mine plant and overall history of the mine is detailed in the document. The poppet head was steel, 70 ft high. Rear legs set on top of low mullock heap. Gold was first discovered here in 1853 by Jonathan Harris, who was later joined by two coloured men to whom he later sold out. They in turn sold out to a one-armed man, J. Hustler and Messrs. Latham and Watson. The poppet heads of the Great Extended Hustlers were later removed, and the extra 15 ft of the front lets cut to the Stanfield mine at Long Gully. Article is titled Lansell Erects Australia's Tallest Poppet Head.George Fauckner was responsible for erecting the tall poppet head at the 222 mine. Eight huge logs were used to make the four legs which morticed together. Blacksmiths made and riveted steel bands around the joints to secure them. Harkness Foundry manufactured the winding plant which was the largest in Bendigo at that time.
