In July 1940, the 2/24th Battalion was formed in Wangaratta. On the 27th September, after weeks of hard training the Battalion marched out to Bonegilla to continue training prior to overseas deployment to the Middle East in November, 1940. This image depicts soldiers resting during the 60 mile march.The 2/24th Battalion was an infantry battalion of the Australian Army, which served during World War II .A unit of all-volunteers, it was formed in July 1940 from primarily Victorian volunteers and was known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. It served in North Africa in 1941–1942 as part of the 26th Brigade, which was assigned to the 7th Division, before being reassigned to the 9th Division. In early 1943, the battalion returned to Australia and later took part in campaigns against the Japanese in New Guinea in 1943–1944 and Borneo in 1945, before being disbanded in 1946. The 2/24th suffered the highest number of casualties of any 2nd AIF infantry battalion. The 2/8th Armoured Regiment was raised in June 1941 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel W G Hopkins with officers and men selected from the wider AIF in Victoria. The regiment trained in newly arrived M3 General Grant tanks at Puckapunyal before moving north to Singleton, then the Wee Waa plains. The regiment sailed for New Guinea in April 1943 and carried out mobile defence to airfields at Port Moresby, Milne Bay, Dobadura and Popondetta. The regiment returned to Australia in February 1944 and disbanded as an armoured regiment and retrained as Nos 41, 42 and 43 Landing Craft Companies. According to the paper label "Over 300 Legatees participated in the ANZAC Day march commemorating Legacy's 70th Anniversary." The photo shows the Legatees marching along St Kilda Road past the Melbourne Concert Hall. (See also 00754, 00755, 00788). Some of these photos were published in the May edition of The Answer. The article mentioned that the Anzac Day Commemoration Council allowed Legacy to march as a contingent because of Legacy's 70th Anniversary. President John Stevenson led the contingent of over 300 Legatees. All of the marchers received a sprig of rosemary as a gift from Legacy (and thanks to the widows that prepared them). Historically significant. This shows who the families of the Kiewa Valley were and what type of things they purchased. This would be the only register for this store in 1906.It gives a good historical record of what families purchased during this period and how much they could spend. Common for units of the Armed Forces to have their own magazine and newspaper to be a source of news and gossip for the group.Regimental Magazine, cream white paper, 20 pages stapled together. The Marching girls activity was prominent in the 1960's and 1970's and had participation rate of around 30000. It was a part of activities such as street parades and town celebrations and local shows. However the girls also competed against other clubs . In this case the badges tell the story of competitions around the district to Ararat, Horsham, Ballarat, Beaufort and Warrnambool. These were owned by Lyn Bristol who was a member of the Warrnambool group. Most clubs had teams in various age groups. A tangible link to a local sport and club in the Warrnambool area. With large numbers of girls participating in the sport it has strong social interest .Yellow satin ribbon sewn to make a V shape rounded at the top. There are approximately 60 badges pinned to the ribbon which relate to marching events . They vary from coloured enamel to plain white and yellow metal . Some have bars at the top and they are engraved on the backs of the badges. The engravings list the different categories of marching girls competitions A number of them have the initials L B on them. Photos of a march, ceremony and wreath laying at the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. It was part of the Golden Jubilee 50 year celebrations in 1973. (see also 00479). It is the same event when an Olive Tree of Peace was planted in the western lawn of the Shrine (see 00441 and 00442). The photos show a group of Legatees marching towards the Shrine behind a military band. This piece of music has been produced during World War Two (1941) as a propaganda and fund-raising piece for the people of Alexandria in Egypt. It has both Greek and British backing with the headings on the cover in both languages. The music is a march and the title suggests that victory is on the way so the emotions are being stirred to keep up the morale. Egypt in World War Two was still under British influence and Alexandria is a port in Egypt at the mouth of the Nile River. In 1941 British battleships were based in the Alexandria harbor and two of them were disabled by Italian Navy divers. Hence it is not clear why it was the Hellenic (Greek) Red Cross raising funds for Alexandria through the sale of this music which was produced in that city by the Moharrem Press (founded 1938) and composed by Lena Bonfiliou, probably a Greek person. It is not known if this piece of music was bought in Australia or brought back to Australia by an Australian military person during World War Two.This is an interesting piece of music. Its connection to Warrnambool is not known but it is an example of the type of music produced during World War Two to help the war effort. This is a four page piece of music, ‘On the Road to Victory’ (a march) with a front cover, a blank end page and two pages of musical notation. The latter pages have black printing on white pages. The front cover has both Greek and English printing and a colour image of four British and Greek flags resting on a gun carriage with armaments underneath and indications of an explosion. There is a red stamp on the cover (Hellenic Red Cross). The pages are in good condition.
