1905-1933.The bandage winding machine wound calico bandages for patient use. A sheet of calico was torn into strips of differing widths and a length of around 8 feet or 240 cm. The bandage was wound around the handle shaft, by hand initially, to get purchase, then the handle was turned until the bandage was tightly wound. Mrs Martha Closter ( Kloster), of Oakleigh purchased the Melber Sewing Machine in 1909 and gave it to her daughter Mary when she and Alonzo Box married in 1918 and settled in Moorabbin Shire. This document was donated by a descendant of the Box family in 1985.William and Elizabeth Box purchased 'Box Cottage' in 1865 from a pioneer settler who had bought part of the land noted in Dendy's Special Survey 1841 Brighton. They raised their family there and established a market garden to supply produce to the population of Melbourne. Their nephew Alonzo married Mary Kloster/ Closter in 1918 and she brought with her this 'Melber' sewing machine that she used to provide clothing for the family The original, hand written, Guarantee for the Melber Sewing Machine purchased by Mrs Martha Closter of Oakleigh in July 15th 1909 at Powell & Candy, Importers of Chapel Street, Prahran, Melbourne. Arthur Henry Miers played for cricket, football and baseball teams in Kew for a number of decades in the first half of the twentieth century. He was born on 22 November 1901, the son of Rodolph Theophilus Miers (1874-1951) and Margaret Frances (Margaretta) Fry (1875-1958). He had two brothers, Rodolph Cecil Miers (1904-80) and Charles Wilfred Miers (1906-88), and a sister Marjorie Elizabeth Miers (1911-84). Embarked to the Middle East 11.1.1940, embarked for Greece 1.4.1941 and disembarked back in Egypt in May 1941, embarked for Aust and arrived 27.2.1943. Embarked for Milne Bay NG on 28.7.1943, embarked from Finschafen and arrived in Australia 10.3.1944. He was hospitalised twice in the Middle East with Conjunctivitis then Varicose veins, Malaria in Australia after return from NG. Discharged from the 2nd AIF on 22.10.1945. His records state he married and was date entered 5.4.1944, Wife Mrs A.E.Edwards of 40 York St Prahran. Miss Florence Perry was at the centre of a strong and vibrant musical culture in Clunes which featured a brass band, a men's mouth organ band, an orchestra and church choirs. The success of Miss Perry's choirs in competitions was a source of pride in the town and a cause for celebration. After their success in Melbourne in 1906, the Juvenile Choir were greeted at the Railway Station on their return by the brass band and well wishers before attending an impromptu concert at the Town Hall. Miss Perry herself was born in Clunes in 1880 and worked as a music teacher in the town. Her father was the conductor of the Clunes Orchestra.
