Cattle grazing on the Bogong High Plains during summer commenced in the 1840s and continued for many years. The Soil Conservation Authority recorded each family's area boundaries which were updated in June 1972 and continued to be adjusted until cattle were banned in 2005. The tradition of cattle grazing continues to be controversial.Holders of grazing rights for grazing on the Bogong High Plains were allocated specific areas recorded by the Soil Conservation Authority in 1972. This photo was taken at the opening of the footbridge over Back Creek by Sir Winston Dugan, Governor of Victoria, in 1936. He is cutting bunting draped along the bridge rails. South Surrey Park was developed on land which had been the property of the Kleinert family. Their land extended from Union Road to Essex Road. They ran horses, ducks and fowls and Emily Kleinert grew flowers. Alan Holt research: Lot 6 was sold to Martin Klienert by Karl Richter in 1860 together with a portion of another adjacent lot. From 1860-1885 Martin worked it as a market garden leasing some land for grazing when it was not required for gardening. He died in 1898. In a formal document, William declared he was the son of Martin "who purchased land in 1860, died in 1898 and the land has been continually occupied by father and family since. It has been cultivated as a market garden; when not being used for gardening it was let for cultivation and grazing." William died in 1939 and the property passed to his sons Martin and Ernest. Images of the contents of a Photo Album presented to Capt GW Kenney by members of the ASR Officers Mess on leaving Army Survey Regiment, Fortuna in 1978 are particularly important as a snapshot set of many members of the Army Survey Regiment in 1978. These photos are particularly interesting as members are photographed in their workplaces. Unfortunately, not all workplaces have been represented, however a large number have been. The majority of individuals in these photographs who were serving at the Army Survey Regiment at the time have been named. The images have been converted into MPEG - 4 video file format that runs for 3.5 minutes and is stored on a memory stick. The 69 individual still images have been saved in compressed JPEG (.jpg) format and are also stored on the single 16Gb USB memory stick. 39156 Capt GW Kenney served in the Australian Army from 6 Jan 67 till 1 Aug 2000. He commenced his career within the RASvy Corps until 1978 and after completing his religious training went on to serve as an Army Chaplin for the remainder of his 30yr Army career. He officiated at many significant Survey Corps ceremonial and social occasions in his Chaplin capacity.
