Photograph - Junior legatee outing, Somers Camp
... and Weekly Times" in blue ink. ... Herald and Weekly Times" in blue ink. Black and white photo ...A photo of boys in line receiving a meal at a camp at an unknown camp or date. It came from an envelope with other Camp photos of varying dates. The Legacy envelope was marked "P6 Junior Legatee Camps and Hols" in red pen, and dated Jan 1977 in pencil. The contents will be items 00418 to 00425. Melbourne Legacy arranged many events for Junior Legatees to experience. For many years a regular event was a two week camp at Somers Camp. It started in the 1930s with outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring. Permanent camp buildings were built and with an association with Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) it was called Somers Camp. The camps gave the children an opportunity of a summer beach holiday with other Legacy children.A record of Junior Legatee camps.Black and white photo of boys being fed at a camp.P6 / Legacy / 4 in blue pen. Photograph, Junior Legacy Classes, 1960s
... Stamped on the back Copyright, Herald and Weekly Times... Stamped on the back Copyright, Herald and Weekly Times in grey ink ...A photo of a group of female junior legatees in sporting outfits. There are 20 girls of various ages, and 1 lady who could be the instructor. Legacy clubs ran classes for junior legatees for many years such as gymnastics, swimming or dancing classes. It was part of providing for the children of their deceased comrades. The skills they learned were show cased in an annual demonstration usually at the Melbourne Town Hall. It appears to be photo taken professionally, as there are several photos of different classes (see 00862 - 00873) perhaps to record Legacy classes for promotion purposes. A note with the photo identifies two young ladies; "Kneeling at the front Michelle and Anne O'Connor. Date is estimated as the 1960s as they joined classes in 1962.A record of a way Legacy provided classes for junior legatees.Black and white photo of girls and young ladies in sports outfits with the Legacy logo.Stamped on the back Copyright, Herald and Weekly Times in grey ink. ... Stamped with copyright of Herald and Weekly Times in green... with copyright of Herald and Weekly Times in green ink. Hand written ...A photo of Barbara Leach, volunteering with a badge tray, and a bag piper in the centre of St Kilda Road. The slogan says "Please buy a badge". It appears to have been professionally taken to publicise Legacy Week in the newspapers. The photo appeared on the front page of the Herald Sun on 6 September 1991. The accompanying articles says that police piper Constable Ross Bates played outside Legacy House to pipe in Legacy Day, which saw hundreds of collectors spread across Melbourne for the badge appeal. The appeal was aiming to reach $500000 to beat the previous year's total of $467,702. The reference number 910906/9 could mean the date was the 6th September 1991. The picture is attributed to George Salpigtidis.A record of promoting Legacy in Badge Week.Black and white photo of a bag piper and a lady collecting for the Legacy Appeal.Stamped with copyright of Herald and Weekly Times in green ink.
