Document, Ern Whitmore, Loveday Internment Group Barmera SA, 28 February 1946
A concise and interesting story of the Loveday internment group Barmera SA with first hand knowledge and donated to the Museum by its author Ern Whitmore, born 1899. The forward by Lt. E. T Dean DSO VD is particularly worthy of note.A 32 page manuscript each enclosed in an individual clear plastic envelope. The top half of the front page "internment in South Australia" which is superimposed on an indistinct plan of probably be an internment camp. The lower half has a sentry with rifle in a sentry box overlooking a camp at night. Photograph, Australian swaggy and magpie - caricature, 1941-1946
Hans Walter von Gruenewaldt was a German POW who used his artistic ability to paint several large mural caricatures while he was held at Camp 13 at Murchison. The technique he used was colourful house paint, painted directly onto the walls of the German mess hut, reading room and recreation hall in compound 13D. The paintings were completed over a duration of six years (1941-1946). A large collection of events in regard to Camp 13. Documents include the names of 983 German POW's in Murchison August 1941 - January 1947. An interesting collection confiscated intelligence report. No 94 included 26 gall of wine, 9 drums of fruit in an advances state of fermentation, flex copper wire, clothing, petrol motor and miscellaneous cameras and wireless parts. A letter by the German Naval Commander to all families of the Kormoran crew. History of German POW's in WW2 by H. Wolf. Both in German. Map 13 B. the 21 September 1942 disturbance in D compound; report in German Sydney-Kormoran; weekly rations; dimensions of a tunnel 15 June 1942. Drawings by Heinz Dohmen - Arandora Star; royal Oak both sunk by u boat ace Gunther Prien, Collins gunner Kloppe; Kormoran at the memorial service for HMAS Sydney; Red Cross reports in German as are letters; Rudi Pruckners escape; the general conditions and the recently found tunnel.Foolscap size folder with pillar box red 3 cm wide flap which extends to the back. Donor is daughter of a member of Australian armed forces who served during WW2, and was member of garrison at Camp 13 after the war, in 1946. Donor was researching her father's service & obtained at her expense copies of these archives held by the AWM, related to daily activities in the camp during the time that her father was posted at Murchison. Records show, amongst other things, troop (garrison) movements, routine orders, outcomes of disciplinary proceedings. Copies of archival documents obtained from AWM, specifically Australian Army war diaries / intelligence summaries pertaining to Murchison POW group (Camp 13). For periods: 1. Jan-Mar 1946; 2. Banner, Afrika Korps Banner, 1941
Captain Robert Ure Bain was Adjutant to Lt. Col. Bush, POW Group Commandant from 1942 - 1947. He was chosen to be one of the Australian Army officers who escorted the German POW's back to Germany in January 1947. A German POW and former member of the Afrika Korps made the item and donated it to Robert.Afrika Korps banners, embroidered, one piece of material. Large hemmed square of white/ cream cotton material embroidered with two unfinished Afrika Korps banners. Line drawn around both, to indicate edge/cutting point/unfinished embroidery point. The photograph show banner 1 which has a palm tree & swastika (emblem of the Afrika Korps). Swastika has been left outlined in pencil but not embroidered, probably so as not to create trouble by displaying the now banned swastika: Banner 2 has red stylised German eagle over the number 8. Also in picture is a model of an aeroplane and a framed coat of arms with Braunschweig (a place in north west Germany otherwise known as Brunswick).Banner 1: Afrika Korps (pink lettering); 1941 (light blue lettering). Photos of the opening ceremony at the Tatura Museum, in conjunction with 50th Anniversary, of the Temple Society in Australia. Sister Beatrice Moore nursed at Camp 3 during WW2 and was invited by Tatura and District Historical Society to officially open their new buildings and display on POW and Internment Camps, on 22 September 1991.
