Photographic image of the abandoned open-cut mine at Black...-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill ...The first company to make a success of hard-rock (quartz) gold mining at Black Hill was the Black Hill Company, formed in 1859. Mining from the open-cut mine probably commenced in 1860 and by 1861 the company had erected the largest stamping mill in Victoria. The mill ran 24 hours a day until the end of 1864 and 12 hours a day in 1865. Open cut mining then ceased. Three gold covered auction catalogues with black printing for Australia's First (Believed to be World's First) Gold Nugget Auction held in the Memorial Hall, Pall Mall, Bendigo on the 24th May, 1980. Catalogues are made of card and are tri-fold. On the front is a black sketch of Bendigo Historic Post Office. The inside which is white are the Conditions of Sale, the centre has the List of Nuggets which includes Lot No., No. of Nuggets and Approx. Lot Wt. in Grains. Under this are the Ingots which includes the Lot No. and Approx. Weight in Grains. Some notes are underneath. On the right fold is A History of Gold Discovery in Victoria and Large Nugget finds in the Area. Also mentioned are the Welcome Stranger Nugget, The Blanche Barkly Nugget and the Robins Nugget. The Monument Hill Gold Mine was at the corner of Old Violet Street and Olive Street. It operated until 1947. The shaft was capped, the poppet legs and mullock removed. A house now occupies the site. The Monument Hill Gold mine depth was over 1200 ft. The donor of the photograph is the grandson of Albert Dunstan, and he recalls that 'the mine was fully operational in the 1940's and I was often able to see my Grandfather at work and watched as men stepped into cages to be lowered to their awful occupation'. Donor's great, great grandfather was John Perry Dunstan, a well respected mine manager on the Bendigo goldfield.Two black and white copies of original photograph. Image shows Albert Ernest Dunstan working in the engine room of the Monument Hill Gold Mine, Bendigo. Albert is at the controls of the engine, lowering and raising the mining cage; he is leaning on the support railing around the elevated platform he is standing on. Letter accompanying images describes the donor's family connection to John Perry Dunstan and Albert Ernest Dunstan, he writes that ' the mine was fully operational in the 1940's and I was often able to see my Grandfather at work and watched as men stepped into cages to be lowered to their awful occupation. An item forming part of a collection of costumes, photographs and documents relating to the Weir family who lived in a mansion, originally named Illapa, at 84 Princess Street, Kew, from c.1917 to 1950. This historically significant collection includes items relating to both George Weir (1866-1937), his wife Edith Mary Weir (1867-1948) and their children. George Weir attained national prominence in the mining industry, becoming General Manager of the North Broken Hill Silver Mining Company in 1903 (later renamed North Broken Hill Mining Company 1905-12, and North Broken Hill Ltd 1912-1988), and subsequently President of the Mine Owners Association. He was to remain General Manager of North Broken Hill Ltd until his retirement in 1926.Small black and white photograph of a panoramic view from the tower of 84 Princess Street, Kew during the occupation of the house by the Weir family during the years 1918-1950. The house and garden had formerly been named Illapa and then Parcnacilla. In 1950 the family sold the house to a religious order who renamed the house 'The Towers'. Quartz Hill is situated on the Sheephead line of reef and is situated just south of where the Red, White and Blue Consolidated Gold Mine operated. Two newspaper cuttings affixed to lemon backing sheet. Written on top in black pen: 'Quartz Hill Working Bee, Bdgo Adv. 11.12.67' Cutting one, 'Working Bee on Mine Site' with 7.12.67 written across the top, describes an appeal to get volunteers to clear the site of former mines on Quartz Hill. This is anticipated to 'clear the site of accumulated debris and clean out the two large adits driven into the hill and thus make the site a 'tourist visiting spot'. Cutting two, 'Many Miss Mine Working Bee' dated 11.12.67, describes the poor response to the working bee. ' Members of the Tourist Development Association and the Town Clerk, Mr. A.J. Watts, cleared 175 feet of the Northern tunnel and cut an entrance way and steps in the Southern tunnel of the New Blue Mine area in the first stage of the mining project. Mr. J. Stanistreet said last night he was most disappointed. Document - Phillip's Water Wheel, Diamond Hill, Bendigo, 1876
'Messrs. George Phillips and Richard Williams erected a water wheel crushing machine near the site of the Old Albert shaft at Diamond Hill'. ( Bendigo Advertiser 4th June, 1890). The lack of water available for the venture from the water race caused much controversy in the following years. There was only enough water available in July 1890, to allow the company to operate three head of a ten head stamper. The site of the water wheel is still visible on the side of the water race at Diamond Hill. Mr. Geo Phillips held 1000 shares in the float of the Kangaroo Hydraulic Crushing & Gold Mining Company. Denis Gibbons (1937 – 2011) Trained with the Australian Army, before travelling to Vietnam in January 1966, Denis stayed with the 1st Australian Task Force in Nui Dat working as a photographer. For almost five years Gibbons toured with nine Australian infantry battalions, posting compelling war images from within many combat zones before being flown out in late November 1970 after sustaining injuries. The images held within the National Vietnam Veterans Museum make up the Gibbons Collection. A black and white photograph of an Engineer 'Tunnel Rat' wearing a flack jacket enters a tunnel found leading into the Long Hai Hills during land and mine clearance operations in July 1969.
