GERVASONI Born Melbourne, Victoria Graduating from Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology where she received a Bachelor of Applied Science-Planning, and the University of Melbourne with a Master of Environmental Studies Lisa Gervasoni's artwork reflects her passion for the landscape and built form. Lisa Gervasoni specialises in photography, embroidery and acrylic paintings on canvas. Many of her works have the theme of interpretation of heritage and cultural spaces. Dedicated to recording cultural heritage in situ Lisa Gervasoni has used photography to document urban areas, heritage sites and natural resources of Australia.She has provided over 70,000 images to the National Library of Australia Trove database via the Flickr portal. In 2004 Lisa Gervasoni won the Daylesford Small Art Prize for an embroidered depiction of the Savoia Hotel in Hepburn Springs, and in 2022 she was shortlisted in the Harden Landscape prize. Her art mediums are photography, embroidery and acrylic on canvas. This photograph was taken at what is now the Young’s Creek picnic area which is located on the site of an old sawmill, once owned and operated by L.E. & H. Williams, dating back to the early 1920’s. The mill was eventually sold, dismantled, and the machinery transferred to a sawmill at Cabbage Tree Creek. there are still some items of old sawmill debris. The old steam engine at the edge of the car park is the remains of the mill’s former power plant. The drystone doublestorey homestead was made of local sandstone and was constructed by a partnership of four - Carlo Gervasoni, Luigi Gervasoni, Ambrogio Invernizzi, and Giuseppe Giupponi. The cellar was dug out first, and the stones that were removed was used to build the walls. The timber was cut by the dark of the moon when the sap was down. These items are from the private collection of George Shirling of Red Onion, Falls Creek. This membership card belonged to George and his wife. George Shirling arrived in Falls Creek in 1962. He engaged Phil Nowell to build the original Koki Alpine Lodge which opened in 1965 with 14 beds. George operated the lodge with Michael “Baldy” Blackwell as manager. He also graduated in sport psychology in 1981 and was invited to become team psychologist for the Australian Winter Olympic team which went to Albertville, France, in 1992. He later owned the Red Onion Chalet. George credited the success of Koki to “Baldy” Blackwell. “Baldy” and Phil Nowell started the Trackers Mountain Lodge in partnership during the 1980s. In 1971 George sold Koki Lodge to Sigi Doerr. In 2024 the renamed Koki Alpine resort remains a highly popular destination in Falls Creek. George Shirling passed away on 27th February 2023. He had remained actively involved in Falls Creek and was generous with his time and knowledge, always an amazing supporter of The Falls Creek Museum and Falls Creek Village.This item is significant because it belonged to George Shirling, a pioneer of Falls Creek.A plastic membership card featuring an image of a skier in gold and the Falls Creek Ski School logo. The members' name is imprinted on the card as well as the expiry date. The logo of Lavazza Caffe Expresso is on the lower right hand corner. The Falls Creek Search and Rescue Squad was formed in the mid 1970s. It was partly instigated by Rob Spargo whose family purchased the site where the Falls Creek Hotel is today. The family was instrumental in the establishment and growth of the Falls Creek community and were involved in the foundation of Falls Creek Primary School and Falls Creek Search & Rescue (now Falls Creek SES). Rob was also involved in the start-up of Ski Victoria and has served as a member the Chamber and Resort Management Board. The Falls Creek SES Unit was established in 1981 and includes several members who have served their community with VICSES for more than 30 years.This uniform patch represents an important safety organisation at Falls Creek.A cloth badge with metal studs at each corner.
