This well-known Kew business, which would become known as The Model Dairy, was founded in 1863 by James Venn Morgan. Morgan sold the company in the 1890s to John Simonton who renamed the business The Model Dairy Co. Simonton had experience in the local dairying industry having previously leased the Willsmere Park Dairy. He moved the business to Belmont Avenue in c.1899. In 1924, following his retirement, the company expanded to become The Model Dairy Pty Ltd with Arnold Thompson Simonton and John Tanner as its owner/directors. With new techniques and processes such a pasteurisation, the Belmont Avenue site no longer met required standards for processing and bottling, so its operations moved to 191 Cotham Road. The company celebrated its centenary in 1963. A new factory, built in 1959 to a design by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, was purchased by Bib Stillwell Motors after the dairy closed. Container - Object, Cane milk bottle basket, 1930-1940

Basket weaving and brush making was a source of income for those who worked in the workshops at RVIB and other institutions in New South Wales and Queensland. A diverse range products could be produced with cane, such as cane chairs, cots, washing baskets and trolleys, and the Institution sought to highlight these in the annual report. Over time the demand for, and supply of, cane changed - particularly during World War 2 when Asian sources were under attack or destroyed. At home, other materials such as plastics as well as the ability to import cheaper pre-produced products further reduced the demand for workshop pieces. A milk bottle basket was designed for milkmen to deliver their wares quickly from door to door, without the bottles impacting upon each other. The milk basket was made in the basket shop of the RVIB for use in the organisation. Murray Comrie Collection. John Pierce's Southern Cross General Store, a wholesale grocer and spirit merchant was put up for sale after Pierce's death in 1871. It was later incorporated into the Flour Mill complex. De Gruchy & Leigh was a publishing and printing firm operating in Melbourne and regional Victoria from the late 1850s until the mid 1860s. The company published almanacs and guidebooks as well as prints (portraits, views and genre scenes), maps and architectural plans (Source: National Portrait Gallery, Canberra). This is a copy created from another item in the collection - a printed piece of paper which was either a packing label or receipt form used at the company or a brand label for bottles, perhaps for wine made by the proprietor. Copy probably made by Murray Comrie in the 1970s. Monochrome photographic copy of a lithograph. Depicts a building with glass front windows and signage stating 'J. Pierce Wine & Spirit Merchant' and 'Southern Cross General Store, Wholesale and Retail Depot'. In front of building on road are two horses hitched to carts and men standing on cart and in front of store. This store was located on the south-eastern corner of Commercial Road and King Street. Roadside buildings, formerly Doney's General Store. Doney's operated from the 1880s through to the late 1960s. It was situated at the head of the present day Research shops on Main Road near the corner of Raglan Road. By the 1960s it was under new ownership. The Store had a residence at the back. Signs promote The Herald and Sun newspapers, four 'n twenty pies, coca cola and more. A public phone box is in the front of the store. Beside the store is possibly an old farm building with more signs advertising honey, Streets, Tarax and a local bottle dump. Mosquito drops, Marne & Co. Herbert St., Dulwich Hill, Sydney, N.S.W, Marne's Mosquito Drops, 1919

Found in the cellar of the former Barr's drapery shop, Sussex Street, Linton, which at one time had a doctor's consulting room. Bob Albert (who found them) assumed they were something to do with the medical practice. He gave the box of mosquito drops to Joan and Alan Giles. Information in newspaper advertising (found via Trove) shows the drops were marketed in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia between about 1915 and 1927. The address on the packaging suggests these particular bottles were manufactured after 1918.Twelve green boxes labelled 'Marne's Mosquito Drops', stored in a strong cardboard box bearing a green label, also reading 'Marne's Mosquito Drops'.
