Various colour photos of Wimmera Flour Mill at time it was being demolished. Note roof being dismantled. Rail line in foreground. Willaim Frayne founded the Wimmera Flour Mill on a site in Taylor Street (beside the railway line) Stawell 1876. When Willian Frayne dies 1899 his son George took over the mill. The mill continued to be a propriety company until early 1966, when it was sold to the Victorian Mill Owners. The sale was forced because of the lack of export markets. A factor which affected most country mills. The Victorian Oat Growers Pool took over on July 1st, 1967. Trading under the name of Wimmera Flower Mill as a subsidiary company. Later years it sold clipped and graded seed, oats, stockfeed for poultry, pigs and dairy cattle and all types of crushed grain. The original Frayne homestead still stands behind where the Mill stood facing Frayne Street. In 2007 during our "Collection Review" the four smaller colour photos, which were donated by Mr. Mick Walsh, 52 Patrick St Stawell were very similar to the bigger photo in the file 139.6e.139-6 a-d & e Coloured photographs showing various views of the Wimmera Flour Mill or Grain Handling Corporation building in progress of being demolished. There is a red brick building with a tiled roof in these coloured photos. The rail line is shown in foreground of 139-6 e. Our records on the data base show 139-6e to be a black & white photo but the same photo in the office folder is an enlarged colour photograph. Grain Handing Corporation stawell industry -

It is possible it was on his farm for some years prior to this. The 1924 building of the Glenormiston Butter and Cheese Factory Company Limited is one of the more intact butter factories in the state. This building, together with the 1936 addition, stand free on the site and make up the total complex. Architecturally interesting, Glenormiston gains visual importance from the bi-chromatic banded chimney, one of the best diary industrial chimneys in the state, and the elegant design and detailing of the complex which indicated the added importance placed on the industry in the western district over and above mere commercial concerns. The factory is noted for its aesthetic impact gained by being situated outside the township in a clear rural situation at the foot of Mount Noorat. The Glenormiston/Trufood connection is technologically significant for its innovative role in establishing the dried skim milk powder industry, once a site of high tourist importance. Historically the well known Black family, Western District pioneers and large land holders, played an important role in establishing both Glenormiston and Trufood and the family connections operated to maintain the unusual trading links between the two.(http://vhd.heritagecouncil.vic.gov.au/places/69388/download-report, accessed 31 January 2017) In 2015 the building was neglected and in a ruinous condition. In 1924, following his retirement, the company expanded to become The Model Dairy Pty Ltd with Arnold Thompson Simonton and John Tanner as its owner/directors. With new techniques and processes such a pasteurisation, the Belmont Avenue site no longer met required standards for processing and bottling, so its operations moved to 191 Cotham Road. The company celebrated its centenary in 1963. A new factory, built in 1959 to a design by Bates, Smart & McCutcheon, was purchased by Bib Stillwell Motors after the dairy closed. North east Victoria was a major dairy producing region in the late nineteenth century. The Wodonga Butter Factory Ltd was established in 1892. Many families living in the town or on farms also owned their own cow for family needs and produced their milk and butter. This churn is representative of the equipment they used to process their own dairy products at home. This churn was made by E. Cherry & Sons which was established in Gisborne, Victoria in 1858. Edward Cherry (1830-1910) arrived in Australia from Hertfordshire, England, in 1855. The business manufactured churns and in 1875 opened a larger factory. On his death, the business was taken over by his son and continued to operate until the 1970s.This item has strong links to the history of Wodonga and north east Victoria. It has interpretative potential in the areas of local agricultural history, and the social history of food and farming.A wooden butter churn with metal turning handle and removable lid. The wooden paddle inside is attached to the turning handle which rotates to churn the butter. The model number is T1. North east Victoria was a major dairy producing region in the late nineteenth century. The first iteration of the Wodonga Butter Factory Ltd was established in 1892. Dairy was sent from farmers across the district for processing at the factory in Wodonga in the 1890s. Victorian creameries regularly exported frozen butter to London, stock was transported by rail for sale in Melbourne, and of course sold and consumed locally. E.W. Manns, of the prominent local Wodonga family, was a shareholder and was closely involved in the establishment of the Wodonga Butter Company. Many families living on farms also owned their own cow, and had equipment to process their own dairy products at home. Edithvale is a suburb in the City of Kingston. It is located between Aspendale and Chelsea on the Port Phillip Bay and built within remnant areas of the Carrum Carrum swamp. The foreshore precinct comprises a wide sandy beach, with low sand dunes and numerous historic boat sheds. The suburb consists of older style dwellings and former holiday houses, combined with mid-century housing and newer homes. The large blocks are increasingly subdivided and the existing dwellings demolished to accommodate units and townhouses, thus changing the landscape of the area and reducing the tree canopy.The beachside suburb of Edithvale was previously part of the extensive Carrum Carrum Swamp. The area was once a source of fish and eels for the Mayone-Bulluk clan of the Bunurong people. Over time the area was drained and predominantly devoted to dairy farming and holiday houses. The farms were gradually sold and subdivided with a large number of homes built after World War II and in the 1960s. Edithvale is mainly residential with a shopping strip along Nepean Highway but little significant industry was ever established in the area apart from a plaster works and confectionary factory, both now closed.Aerial colour photograph of Edithvale as viewed from Alexandra Avenue in the north to Ella Grove Chelsea/Edithvale in the south. A bike path has been established to cover the secondary drain.
