The Light horse Heritage Troop of the 8th/13th Victorian Mounted Rifles provided mounted escort to the Royal couple, HRH Prince Charles and HRH Princess Diana. In 1985, the portion of Puckapunyal Army Camp housing the Armoured School and Corps Museum underwent a major rebuild. The new facility named Hopkins Barracks was officially opened by HRH . Prince Charles on 31 October 1985. Prince Charles, who was accompanied by his wife HRH Princess Diana, is Colonel in Chief of the Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC). This lapel pin originates from the Birkebeiner Lodge in Norway. The cross country ski race which originated there in 1932 was the inspiration for the annual Kangaroo Hoppet Race held in Falls Creek, Victoria. The Kangaroo Hoppet is Australia's premier long distance cross country ski race, and a member of the prestigious Worldloppet series of international cross country ski events. The first race at Falls Creek was held in 1979 under the name of “Australian Birkebeiner”. The course started and finished at the alpine ski village of Falls Creek, and took participants out into the wilderness area of the Bogong High Plains. Later, 42km became the main distance and after a few name changes, the name of Kangaroo Hoppet was adopted in 1990. The lapel pin was owned and donated by Diana Patterson who was a talented cross country skier. She was born in Tasmania and originally pursued a career as a physical education teacher. After making a major career change, she applied to join the Australian Antarctic Division. She applied four times before she was accepted. Diana first travelled to the Antarctic in October 1987. By this time only ten Australian women had spent a winter there. She first worked at Casey Station, before becoming leader at Mawson Station therein becoming the first female leader of an Antarctic base of any nation. After retiring Diana guided tourist expeditions to the Antarctic for many years, as well as continuing work in research and conservation. In 2012 she published her story “The Ice Beneath My Feet: My Year In Antarctica”. Diana Patterson was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for "service to conservation and the environment”. As well as these outstanding career achievements, Diana has been a Board Member of both the Mt. Buller Alpine Resort Management Board, including a period as Chairman, and also the Falls Creek Resort Management Board. The photo shows a group of people on an outing to Stan Savige's property in Balnarring. Legatee Savige is in the striped jacket on the left. Legatee Savige had a beach side property that he allowed to be used for summer camps and outings by Legacy. In this photo there is mention of the children being from Minton Boys Home which was established in Olivers Hill, Frankston in 1924. In the early years, Legacy organised outings to the property of Legacy founder, Legatee Stan Savige, who had a place in Balnarring close to the beach. Permanent camp buildings were built in 1930. In 1930 Lord Somers (Governor of Victoria) also started a camp at a nearby property and the area was renamed Somers. This photo of Alice Maud Marsh has traditionally been associated with the Marsh family that operated a butcher's shop on the corner of Edgevale Road and Fitzwilliam Street, Kew.Cabinet card. Studio portrait of Alice Marsh, J.E. Marsh whose family owned Marsh's Butcher Shop in Edgevale Road from 1915 to 1970. Previously the butcher shop had been owned by Mr Charlie Watson. Alice managed the shop until about 1928, when she became quite ill in about 1924 and died in 1930. The original donor, Nell Baker, who stated that .'..Alice could split lambs and breakup beef, no wonder she became ill!'BORN 29TH NOVEMBER 1877 / ALICE MAUD MARSH / DIED 2 JUNE 1930 / AGED (52) 52. Prince Charles and Lacy Diana visited the district on their 1983 royal tour. The City of Bendigo held a procession and the royal couple watched from the balcony of the Shamrock Hotel with Sun Loong coming out to perform nine ceremonial bows.
