Letter - Document, letter, re. Appointment of Manager - Boy's Hostel
A 4 page job application from Thomas Mullins for the position of Hostel Manager. Lists his war service and loss of his left arm in France 1916. Also the family casualties suffered; mother in an air raid, father and brother through war service, brother living with the after effects of gas, plus his wife's father was a Kandahar veteran. It continues with his civilian experience and how his attributes would suit the position, then provides references. Holmbush was the first children's home established by Melbourne Legacy. It was later renamed Blamey House when the first Blamey House was sold. Melbourne Legacy ran three residences: Blamey House (purchased 1947) , Stanhope (purchased 1945) and Harelands (purchased 1950), to take care of children whose fathers were servicemen, and who may have been left orphans, or whose mother may have been unable to care for them herself. Harelands accommodated boys and girls under the age of 14, Blamey House looked after boys over 14, and Stanhope looked after girls over 14. The photo is a Panorama showing Sturt Street, taken from the Town Hall, looking north east with Mount Warrenheip and Black Hill in the view. Shows the buildings east of Lydiard St, including Bridge St, Camp St and part of Victoria St. One tram is westbound, about to cross Lydiard St. Rose Series P4500. Has signs for the "Mail Echo", Plume petrol, ANA, the Mechanics Institute, and Longhurs Bread. On the rear Wal Jack has written extensive notes for Ken Magor noting the streets in the view and the Ballarat East loco depot and Goods shed. This handwritten reference pertains to Samuel Baird, first student of Ballarat College and was provided and signed by the first Principal of the College, Robert Oliver McCoy. The letter was written on 27 March 1873. The letter remained in the family's keeping until July 2013 when it was donated to the school by a descendent of Samuel Baird. Social significance - The letter gives an indication of the values held by the school and deemed vaulable in the adult owrkforce in the 1870's. List depicts a wide variety of prospective guest speakers that spoke at Tuesday luncheons between 1977 and 1981. Their subjects were noted down and the remarks column included comments such as "Excellent / Good / Fair ". Subjects included: Gallipoli; The Shrine of Remembrance; The Swiss Alps -with slides; Tattooing the history and social significance of; supporting the army in the 80s; people of India. Legatees met regularly and had guest speakers to entertain and inform on different subjects at their Tuesday Luncheons. This document was from a file of information about guest speakers (see also 00812-00822 and 00829-00837). The Programme Committee was responsible for organising the speakers. A record that the speakers at Legacy functions were from very different walks of life and the subjects spoken on varied.
