Photograph, Daniel Robertson Australia Pty Ltd, 2014
Englishman John Robertson was a roofing contractor and importer of slate. He founded the Daniel Robertson company in 1835 after arriving in Australia on a ship that carried a large quantity of slate as ballast. This slate was soon seen on the roofs of important Melbourne buildings. In 1910 the company began producing concrete roof tiles in South Melbourne, and in 1928 they converted the Tunstall Brickworks to produce terracotta tiles. In 1967 Daniel Robertson's produced a unique rustic range of bricks that were such a success that the roof tiles were phased out in 1969. In 2013 Daniel Robertson Australia Pty Ltd closed. These 2014 photographs show the buildings and some products still on the site at the time.13 coloured photographs of the office, storage and kiln areas at the Daniel Robertson site in 2014. Map, Robert Russell, Map Shewing the Site of Melbourne and the Position of the Huts & Buildings Previous to the Foundation of the Township by Sir Richard Bourke in 1837
Map shows the first layout of Melbourne by Government surveyor Robert Russell, who accompanied Governor Richard Bourke in 1837. The surveyed blocks extend from present-day Flinders Street to Lonsdale Street, and Spring Street to Spencer Street, with extensive vacant land west to a salt lake (afterwards Batman's Swamp, later drained), north beyond Flagstaff Hill and south towards South Melbourne. Vegetation coverage is indicated, and tracks and existing buildings and cultivated land are shown.Printed map was created by Day & Haghe, Lithographers to the Queen, sometime after 1838, when the company received its Royal appointment. Copies of the 1837 map exist in several major map collections in Australia; most are uncoloured. This particular map is the earliest in the Kew Historical Society's map collection. It is a nationally significant artefact. Black and white lithographed map hand-coloured in blue and yellow gouache of the town of Melbourne in 1837. In contrast to the original lithograph, the river and the township blocks are coloured blue and yellow. A similar, partly coloured copy is in the collection of the University of Melbourne.maps - melbourne - 1830s, governor sir richard bourke, robert russell - surveyor, cartography -

Photograph, 1st Kew Scouts - Adelaide SA Jan 1924, 1924
The group was most likely en route to the Australian Corroboree, which in 1924 was held at the Adelaide Exhibition Oval. The building in the background is likely to be the railway station, as travelling by train would have been the main method of inter-capital city transport in those days. The ‘Corroboree’ involved a large gathering of Scouts from across Australia. They would have pitched tents to live in, and participated in activities such as swapping badges, visiting the city, going on day trips, putting on concerts and displays, and spending time preparing their own meals.Adelaide SA Jan 19241st kew scouts, south australian corroboree 1924, kew - scouts -

Photograph, Wade's Farm, Kilby Road, Nineteenth Century
""The public trial of reaping machines, under the auspices of the Port Phillip Farmers' Society, advertised to take place on Friday, last, but postponed on account of the weather, came off December 27. The place selected (Mr. Wade's farm, Belford, near Kew) is undulating ground, with a remarkably heavy crop of wheat upon it. This, taken in connection with, the state of the ground, still soft from the recent rains, made the trial an uncommonly severe one. ..."(South Australian Advertiser, 15 January 1859) Some bricks used in Kew buildings came from the brickworks on Wade's Farm at the end of Belford Road near the Yarra River (now part of the Kew Golf Club).
