Certificate - Certificate of Appreciation to Mr John Watson Esq, Kew Methodist Church, 1907
"METHODIST CHURCH. In 1881, during the ministry of Rev. W. H. Fitchett, B.A., at Hawthorn, a number of members of the denomination living at Kew considered that the time was opportune for founding a local Church. The Superintendent of the Circuit, the Rev. W. A. Quick of Richmond, met the members and formed them into a society class under the leadership of Mr. A. Brown and a Church was formally instituted at the house of Mr. T. J. Eaton, of Eglinton Street, in December, 1881. Services were regularly held for some time at the same place, and funds for purchasing a block of land were gradually collected, resulting in the present site in Highbury Grove being purchased for £350. Messrs. W. Cleverdon, A. Money, T. E. Serpell, and T. Vasey, of Hawthorn, and Messrs. A. Brown, R. Eyre, and T. J. Eaton of Kew, were appointed trustees. A public meeting was held a the Town Hall, when over £100 was raised. The Rev. John Harcourt, who had just been placed on the supernumerary list, was persuaded to undertake the charge, and commenced services in the Town Hall on 29th April, 1882, which were continued for eighteen months. A Sunday School was started, and altogether the effort progressed so satisfactorily that in October, 1882, the foundation and memorial stones of the present Church were laid by Mr James Huddart. At the tea meeting held in connection with this event nearly £200 was raised and a few months later £250 more was obtained by means of a bazaar. The contract for building Church was let for £1,200. The Sunday School celebrated its first anniversary in June, and the Church was opened on 7th October 1883, the preachers on the occasion being Revs. E. J. Watkin, S. Chapman, and John Harcourt, the collections amounting to £230. Towards raising these sums of money the ladies of the congregation helped very materially. In 1886 the foundation stone of a Sunday school, to cost about £900, was laid by Mrs. H Berry, the building being opened in April 1887. During the same year the Church was enlarged. In 1889 parsonage was erected, and again arrangements had to be made for a further enlargement of the Church, at a cost of nearly £2,000. The foundation stones of the tower were laid by Rev J. Harcourt, and of the transepts by Mrs. Job Smith and Mrs. John Watson. These additions were made during the ministry of Rev. P. R. C. Ussher, the first minister appointed to Kew by conference. He has been succeeded by Revs. Henry Howard, J. de Q. Robin, J. J. Brown, J. G. Wheen, A. E. Albiston, M.A., and F. J. Nance, M.A., who is at present ably filling the pulpit. For the musical portion of the services, the Church has been greatly indebted to the enthusiasm of Mr. C. Gardner, the leader of the choir, and Mr. C. E. Gardner, the organist. The Sunday School has had a number of excellent workers, among whom may be mentioned Messrs. Burchett, Allum, Hillard, Tonkin, Dent, Avery, McDonald, Green, and B. Hoadley, who have acted as Superintendents, and Messrs. Arnall and McCaghern as Secretaries. The present trustees are Messrs. H. Berry, Job Smith, A. Hoadley, F. Vial, C. Powers, H. L. Carnegie, C. H. Green, W. R. Rylah, E. M. Tonkin, S. Gaylard, J. Gregory, J. R. McDonald, T. J. Eaton, F. S. Fitchett, and S. Lamble; Society Stewards, T. J. Eaton and B. Hoadley; Poor Stewards, G. Hinchliffe and G. Fraser; Church Stewards, C. H. Green and G. Hinchliffe; Treasurer, F. S. Fitchett; Secretary, S. Lamble." Source: FGA Barnard, Jubilee History of Kew, Victoria, 1910Commemorative tributes were regularly produced in the 19th and early 20th Century to honour community service. Most were adapted from traditional lithographed models. This example, while created within a formal lithographed border has been transmuted into the equivalent of an illuminated document, hand-painted, and therefore rare. The use of flowers in the design emphasises the sentimental and spiritual aspects of the certificate. The document is a rare unique record of the Kew Methodist Church's history.A hand written testimonial for John Watson Esq from the Trustees of the Kew Methodist Church. The customised colour lithograph includes, at lower left, a turn of the century photograph of the Kew Methodist Church in Highbury Grove. The entire certificate is surrounded by floral art and scroll work. The central text uses neo-gothic lettering.‘Dear Sir … in view of your compulsory retirement on health grounds, from the position of Church Steward, [the Trustees] desire to express their great appreciation of your long service of over 22 years, in that and other offices in the Church. They trust that you will yet be spared many years in fellowship with our Church, and that God’s richest blessing be on you, and your family. We remain, Yours sincerely A. E. Albiston (Minister), S. Award - Kew High School trophy, 1880
F.G.Barnard, writing in 1910, recorded that Ernest Ingle opened a boys' school in a private house in Cotham Road, Kew, in 1872. The school was later moved to larger premises in Charles Street, where suitable school rooms were added. Ingle's career was cut short by a fatal attack of typhoid fever in 1875. The school then passed into the hands of Mr. J. Henning Thompson. Under Thompson's management the school speedily became a strong rival to the neighbouring Hawthorn Grammar School. Barnard also lists in his Jubilee History of Kew, that Dr N.C. Vance [winner of the trophy for the 440 yards running event] was a notable alumnus of Kew High School. It is assumed that N.C. Vance was the son of Rev G.O. Vance who was appointed vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Kew, in 1870. This is a tangible memento of the first Kew High School, awarded to a pupil eight years after the school's establishment. The trophy is historically interesting as it was presented to N.C. Vance by Ann Bon, a notable Kew resident and a supporter of Indigenous People in Victoria, particularly William Barak and his family.Silver plated trophy in the form of a cup on a pedestal with two arms, each surmounted with pine cones. The trophy has a range of design features including convex and concave decorated surfaces created by repoussé (i.e.hammering). Specific decorative aspects include scrolling at the top of the cup and floral sprays at front and the rear of the trophy. There is a single inscription identifying the school, the event, the winner and the identity of the person presenting the trophy. The metal used in the cup section of the trophy is heavier and thicker than that used in the rest of the trophy. There are no compositional or maker marks on the trophy.Inscribed: "Kew High School / Old Boys Cup / Presented by / Mrs John Bon / Won by / N Vance 1880"dr n vance, kew high school -- kew (vic.), private schools -- kew (vic.), sports trophies -- kew (vic.), n.c. vance -

Photograph, J E & B L Rogers, 'Ivy Grange', Malmsbury Street, c. 1965
Rate Book evidence records that by 1870 Charles Vickers, architect, was the occupier of this house, having an NA.V. at that date o f£1105, although it is apparent that the house was in fact built by 1864, from the dat; set in the brickwork above the main door. In 1873 the property was purchased by David Beath, a merchant, and it was in the following year that the house was first recorded as 'Ivy Grange'. Beath was a deeply religious man and was a foundation member of both the Congregational and the Presbyterian (the Church of Scotland) Churches of Kew . He added, probably the tower wing, to the house in 1877 when architects Crouch and Wilson called tenders in that year 'for the erection of bluestone additions to (a) villa at Kew, for Davis Beath Esq.' The house was again added to in 1885 by the leading firm Reed, Henderson and Smart. For a number of years in the 1920s 'Ivy Grange' was used as a private mental hospital and is currently a guest house. In 1921 a fete was held at Ivy Grange in aid of building a new church (Sacred Heart, Kew): "Garden Fete in Aid of New Church, Kew. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. Beautiful weather favoured the opening of a garden fete at "Ivy Grange," the residence of Mr. and Mrs. J. Lawlor, Malmsbury and Princess streets, Kew, on last Saturday afternoon, in aid of the fine new Church of the Sacred Heart, Kew, which is now receiving its finishing touches. Not content to wait for the official opening, the lady stallholders did a good business on the previous evening. The ceremony was performed" by the Very Rev. Dean Hegarty, P.P., V.F. (Carlton), with whom were associated the Rev. J. Manly, P.P. (Kew), and the Rev. R. S. Benson, P.P. (South Yarra), Mr. and Mrs. J. Lawlor, and others. Fr. Manly, who was cordially received, said he desired to thank Mr. and Mrs. Lawlor for lending their charming grounds, and for the trouble, time and expense they had given to preparing for the fete. He wished to thank Dean Hegarty for coming to open the fete. The Dean had been a dear and lifelong friend of the late Fr. O'Donoghoe, the beloved pastor of the Kew parish. Next June the Dean would celebrate the golden jubilee of his priesthood, so they could see that he was not a young man. (Laughter.) He hoped that the fete would be a great success, and that when his Grace the Archbishop —: (applause) — should open the new church, he (the speaker) would be able to present a satisfactory financial statement. (Applause.) Dean Hegarty, who was very cordially received, said it was a source of great pleasure to him to come to Kew, of which he entertained many pleasant recollections. The new church would have delighted the heart of their late beloved pastor, but it had pleased God to take him to a holler temple. His mantle had fallen on worthy shoulders, in the person of Fr. Manly—(applause)—who was carrying on the work of the parish well and vigorously. (Applause.) Some wondered how these great works were successfully accomplished. The prime factor in the wonderful progress of the Church— the work of the people, priests and nuns—was their deep, abiding Catholic faith. (Applause.) Kew was not by any means a large parish, yet look at the magnificent church that Fr. Manly was building on the hill! He said to his people, "Come, follow me, and we shall win through." (Applause.) It gave him great pleasure to declare the fete open, and he wished it the highest measure of success. (Prolonged applause.) Mr. J. Lawlor, who was greeted with applause, in moving a hearty vote of thanks to Dean Hegarty for his presence and support, said he knew of the great work done by the Dean in Gippsland, where he (the speaker) lived when a young man. The Dean ministered to a parish at that time as large as was the diocese of Sale to-day. The Dean and Fr. Manly reflected credit on the pioneer priests, who had laid well and solidly the foundations, of religion in Victoria. (Applause.) He was glad that reference had been~made to the work of their late beloved pastor, Fr. O'Donoghoe. : Mr. Pierce Cody seconded the motion, which, was carried by acclamation. The Dean,* in acknowledging the compliment, paid a tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Lawlor for their great generosity in connection with the fete, and complimented them on their successful efforts. (Applause.). A cafe chantant, organised by Mr. John. Sullivan, was contributed to by Misses G. Hornal, M. O'Donnell, Ella Burke, Eileen Burke, Alice Marsh, and M. Carrucan, and Messrs. T. Hammond, J. Donovan, J. Sullivan, and Fr. Lanigan. Mrs. J. Donovan was at the piano. St. Vincent de Paul Boys' Orphanage Band (South Melbourne) rendered selections. The stalls ware as follow:—Cake and Sweets Stall: Mesdames Needham, Treacey, Lynch and Cody. Fancy Stall: Mesdames Lawlor, J. P. Martin, M. Treacey, Simpson, Giddons and A. Molton, and Miss, Shirley. Refrestiment Stall: Mesdames Shiels, Hunter, Kealy, Duane and the Misses Turner and Delahunty; Produce Stall: Mesdames O'Sullivan, Mareli, Carrucan, and Kennedy. Mr. P. J. Kennedy acted as hon. general secretary. The fete was continued in the evening, the grounds being brilliantly illuminated. (Advocate (Melbourne, Vic. : 1868 - 1954), Thursday 7 April 1921, page 13) In 1930 it was acquired by the Carmelite Fathers for use as a novitiate: "IVY GRANGE," KEW." The manuscripts, photographs, maps, and documents were sourced by her from both family and local collections or produced as references for her print publications. Many were directly used by Rogers in writing ‘Lovely Old Homes of Kew’ (1961) and 'A History of Kew' (1973), or the numerous articles on local history that she produced for suburban newspapers. Most of the photographs in the collection include detailed annotations in her hand. The Rogers Collection provides a comprehensive insight into the working habits of a historian in the 1960s and 1970s. Plaque, Kew Presbyterian Church, James Maitland Campbell LL.M, 1931
Extracts from The Church on the Hill: Presbyterianism in Kew 1874-1974 by John A. O’Neill (Mullaya, Canterbury (Vic), 1974, pp.58-60. “An outstanding family which gave devoted service to the Church was the Campbell family of which James Maitland was the “head”. He died at “Ramornie” on the afternoon of Monday 15 December 1930. … “James Maitland Campbell was born in 1847 in Melrose, Scotland, where his father, the Rev. A. J. Campbell D.D., was the Minister of the Kirk. The Rev. Dr. and Mrs. A. J. Campbell, with their family, came to Australia in 1861 and settled in St. George’s Church, Geelong, where he was the first Minister. James Maitland, after completing his secondary education at Geelong College, entered the Melbourne University where he graduated Master of Arts and Master of Laws, and eventually became a partner in the legal firm of Davies and Campbell. When he first came to Melbourne Mr Campbell attended Chalmers Church, East Melbourne, and married Miss Annie Harper, daughter of Robert Harper, a merchant and a sister of Professor Andrew Harper. In March 1875 the young couple settled in Pakington Street, Kew. After the induction of the Rev. Maxwell and the formation of a Board of Management, Mr. Campbell was elected its first Secretary. David Beath, James Maitland Campbell and Duncan Robert McGregor were the first Trustees of our Church. Mr. and Mrs. Campbell joined the Church Choir, and Mr. Campbell became Choir Leader. Members of their family, Bessie, Mary, Nellie and Lewis also sang in the Choir. Mary became a famed teacher of singing in Melbourne. She taught singing to members of the Choir, and gave lessons in voice production to students for the Ministry. In 1879 Mr. Campbell became Superintendent of the Sabbath School, a position he occupied for 27 years. In 1887 he was elected an Elder, and the Session Clerk for 37 years. In 1924 Mr. Campbell compiled a very complete Jubilee History of the Kew Presbyterian Church. Mr. J. M. Campbell saw our existing Church and the Old Manse erected, the Villa purchased, and, with the help of the Kew Congregation, the Charges of West Hawthorn, East Kew and Deepdene established. In the General Assembly of Australia and the General Assembly of Victoria he occupied the important position of Law Agent, and was a member of numerous Church Committees and Councils. … At the Annual Congregational Meeting on Wednesday 28 October 1931, it was decided to erect a tablet in the Church to the memory of the late Mr. J. M. Campbell to record his service to the Church. The tablet was unveiled at the morning service on 13 December by Mr. Legge. The Preacher was Rev. J. Barnaby.”James Maitland Campbell (1847-1930) the owner of “Ramornie” in Pakington Street was an important contributor to the community of Kew in the 19th and early 20th centuries. A Councillor of the Borough of Kew, he was to be elected Mayor on three occasions: 1889-90, 1890-91 and 1892-93. In addition to his political roles, he was the first Secretary of the Kew Presbyterian Church, being actively involved in the life of the Church until his death in 1930. The Kew Historical Society has a small collection of items once belonging to the Campbell family, including a series of invitations issued to Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Campbell for the festivities organised to commemorate the opening of the first Australian Parliament in Melbourne in 1901. Book, The History of Warrnambool by Richard Osburne, 1980
Richard Osburne (1825-1895) came to Warrnambool in 1847, a pioneer resident in the new settlement. In 1851, with John Wilkinson, he founded Warrnambool’s first newspaper, the Warrnambool Examiner, and issued it weekly for some months until he left the town for the goldfields. Returning in 1853 he resumed publication of the Examiner and continued it, intermittently in its last few years, until 1880. He was acknowledged in his day as the Father of the Warrnambool Press and was a dominant figure in Warrnambool’s early history. He was associated with the establishment of the Aboriginal Reserves, Fire Brigade, Mechanics’ Institute, Warrnambool Council, National School, Presbyterian Church, Public Wants Committee, Villiers Building Society, Fish Protection Society, Dramatic Club, Cricket Club, Otway Gold Exploration Syndicate and other institutions. In 1882 he went to live in Melbourne, returning to publish his ‘History of Warrnambool’ in 1887, a Queen’s Jubilee publication. Richard Osburne’s book is a seminal work of the 19th century history of Warrnambool and its importance cannot be over-emphasized. The original copies of this book are now hard to get and are very valuable. This facsimile is kept because the facsimiles are also now becoming rare and they are good examples of the way a facsimile is reproduced and the reason for the existence of this particular reprint– the importance and usefulness of Osburne’s history and the need to make it accessible to researchers today. This is a facsimile edition (1980) of Richard Osburne's book on the history of Warrnambool from 1847 to 1886. It is a hard cover buff-coloured book with gold lettering on the spine. The dust cover is cream-coloured paper with black writing. Inside the cover is a map of southwest Victoria (1880). There are five fold-up inserts (sketches, diagrams etc), a number of business advertisements, sepia photographs and sketches and an index. The dust cover includes information on the author. Hymettus Cottage & Garden Ballarat
Horticultural award certificate
Flower shows or Horticultural exhibitions were a popular form of entertainment and scientific pastime in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and were widely reported on and followed. Ballarat was a major centre for nurseries and prided itself as a garden city promoting many shows at all levels including grand national exhibitions. Exhibitors ranged from professional hybridists, nurserymen and florists to amateur growers. This award represents the cottage or amateur class in flower shows and was awarded at St Andrew's Jubilee Exhibition and Flower Show. It is one of many in the Taffe family collection won by members of the family between 1899 and 2004. The collection covers three generations of amateur growers and showers across three different centuries. This collection also highlights one of the interactions between members of different religious faith communities in Ballarat in the early twentieth century as this Roman Catholic family were exhibiting at Church of England and Presbyterian functions as well as other shows across the community. st andrew's, jubilee, jubilee exhibition and flower show, ballarat, pansies miss taaffe, taffe, baxter & stubbs., roman catholic, church of england, presbyterian, interfaith.
