Domestic object - Colonial Oven, c. 19th century
The colonial oven was an advancement from the previously used open fire cooking. In this example the oven has been inserted into a fireplace and a wood fire would be built underneath the oven to enable the oven to heat up enough to bake items. Large pots could be placed on top of the oven to enable cooking or to heat water.Sheet steel colonial oven in kitchen of Amess House churchill island, oven, kitchen -

Functional object - Spice Box, c. 1820
Spices were used in abundance in Georgian cooking. This was mostly due to the British expansionist policy and their increased colonisation through the world. Spices became more readily available, and the most popular were nutmeg, cardamon, cloves, and peppers. These were often combined and used on meats and poultry to conceal the unusual flavours that was a result of the absence of a refrigerator. The grater that accompanies the spice box was a popular utensil in colonial kitchens and was used for nutmeg as it was recommended to be freshly grated. This spice box is a part of the Churchill Island Heritage collection because it was an important element in a typical Georgian kitchen (1714 - 1830) and later. It represents the type of item that was used within Amess House.Georgian-era spice tin. Black, hinged domed lid, with six compartments and a separate nutmeg grater. churchill island, kitchen, utensils, spice box -

Functional object - Canister set
Robin Boyd developed a close friendship with the founder of the Bauhaus in Weimar Germany, Walter Gropius, who had moved to the USA in the 1930s. Through this connection, Boyd was invited to be the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Bemis Professor at the School in the North American academic year 1956-7. During this time, the Boyds purchased this set of melamine kitchen canisters. They were used for flour, sugar, rice and biscuits etc. Both Robin and Patricia liked melamine, and also had melamine serving dishes. Seven melamine containers with coloured exteriors (ranging from white through yellowy-green, orange and black) with black interiors and teak lids. Functional object - Appliance
The Boyd family recalls this frying pan being used, but not sure of where it was located. The kitchen drawer where this frying pan is currently located was the toaster drawer. The drawer has a power point in it. "The drawer was pulled out and the drop down front lowered for toasting. When shut, no toaster was in sight! In the bottom of the drawer, at one side, there used to be a small slot for sweeping out any dropped bread crumbs."Electric frying pancookware, walsh st appliances, robin boyd -

Functional object - Appliance
The Boyd family think that this came from Robin Boyd's mother's house. Edith Susan Boyd, Robin’s mother, had a wonderful selection of earthenware crockery storage containers in her pantry, a huge walk-in room with open shelves off the kitchen. This scoop was needed to get any content out of these containers.Aluminium scoop (large) with handleThailand" "240 oz" on handle.cookware, gadget, walsh st kitchenware, robin boyd -
