Made by Albert Henry Rogers who served in the British Army during WW1, the grandfather of the donor. It was made as a symbol of hope as receiving letters from home gave them hope. Hence the bullet made into a letter opener is a symbol of something made to kill into something to give hope. (Transcribed from the donor's description)Small letter opener consisting of a handle made from a .303 bullet and a blade made from an unknown metal. The projectile has been split in half lengthways and the blade soldered in. The markings on the cartridge indicate that it is a Mk VII cartridge manufactured by the Royal Laboratory in 1917.Both sides of the blade have decorative engraving on them. The left side has "ARRAS" engraved on it and the right side has "1918 YPRES" engraved on it. The base of the cartridge is marked R^L 17 and VII.ypres, arras, world war 1

This object relates to Herbert Swain GREENING. He was born on 1/01/1891 in Ballarat, VIC. Herbert Swain served in the AIF (3292) enlisting on, 13/07/1915 in Ballarat, VIC before being discharged from duties with the 5 BATTALION as a Army Non-Commissioned Private (PTE) on 15/02/1918. Herbert Swain GREENING was not a prisoner of war. His next of kin is Mrs. M. Greening - Mother. Herbert Greening was awarded the 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal.Brass coloured, circular badge with a crown protruding from the top centre. A once grand French Chateau almost obliterated by artillery fire. Despite extensive frontline service this is one of the few instances where Les Chandler took a photograph of the destruction of war. Aussie, a lighthearted account of life in the field for Australian troops during WW1. Featuring stories, cartoons, letters to the editor and much more. Aussie was conceived in November 1914 but it was not until January 18, 1918 that Aussie was first published with a print run of 10,000 copies. The third issue had a print run of 100,000 copies. A couple of single original issues are also in the archive. This was a compilation put together by Phillip Harris from the original editions and printed in Australia in 1920. Funds raised from the sale of the compilation went towards the construction of The Australian War Memorial.Despite the dreadful conditions on the Western Front during the war the Australian troops managed to procure enough rescoures to publish an interesting and humour packed account of life for them as it was. Pte Evan Edward Jones (No 276) and his younger brother Pte Edward Jones (No 1731) were both members of the 29 Infantry Battalion during World War 1. They enlisted in 1915 in Kyneton where they grew up. Edward enlisted after approval was given by his mother as he was not quite 21. He did not survive the war as he was killed by a sniper in France in 1916. It was Private Edward Jones’ love of adventure that cost him his life. In the trenches in France on 16 August 1916, beside his brother, Private Evan Edward, he raised his head and was caught by a German sniper. The brothers were side by side, and it was suggested to their sergeant that he should take a short rest; they had been 36 hours without sleep. The sergeant said “Oh no, I won’t leave you fellows.” Private Jones said “If I got a chance of a shut eye I’d take it.” He raised his head over the parapet and a German sniper caught him in the forehead, and shut his eyes forever. With difficulty his brother was restrained from rushing over the top for revenge. Evan survived the war, serving in France and Belgium. Some of his letters, together with other memorabilia, have been donated to the RSL by family members. One letter to his wife describes how a bullet hit a cartridge in his pouch but missed his body. Cartridges, the bullet and the piece of shrapnel are also included with the donated items. Part of one of Evan’s letters to his wife is re-printed here. “This bullet is the nearest thing as ever … since I have been in France. I wondered what struck me when it hit me, or rather hit the cartridge that was in my pouch. If it had been an inch or two higher it would have come through my body…the wish bone is from the fowl we had for supper last night, one of the boys bowled the fowl over with a stone so we got to work and cleaned and cooked it and it was just the thing. I got the wishbone so I thought it would be a good souvenir to send home…don’t forget to wish something nice with the wishbone.” Both boys had a strong sense of adventure and it was only natural that they fought and died for King and country. There were numerous events in Kew, held during World War I, to support the War Effort. The 'Our Heroes' Carnival was held in the Kew Recreation Hall [dem. 1960], Wellington Street on the weekend of 9 and 10 August 1918. The event was held to gain financial support for the Lady Mayoresses' Patriotic League. Three press reports [see references] describe or illustrate the event. Organisation of the event was led by the Mayoress, Mrs Wynne, with the assistance of Mrs. H. Dodd and Mr. Hamilton Wilson. Stalls were operated by women selling items donated or created by individuals, organisations or institutions. While the badge is not mentioned in the references, it was clearly able to be purchased as a symbol of support for the event and for the cause for which it raised funds.The badge appropriates cultural symbols for political purposes. It is a rare example of a three-dimensional badge created to support Australian soldiers abroad during WW1. It is unusual in that the inscription is localised to the municipality rather than using a generic label. The date is unknown but probably 1991 the year John Sullivan was president. Photos were in a scrapbook of photos spanning 1983 to 1991.A record that Legacy had a presence at an RSL Conference. Minutes of the Kangaroo Ground War Memorial Bazaar Committee, 1922-1926 EDHS Newsletter No. 123 November 1998 PRESIDENT'S REPORT ACQUISITION FROM NILLUMBIK SHIRE'S MEMORABILIA Recently found in a storage box of old Shire of Eltham items was a school size, blue lined black covered writing book. It is recognized as the minute book and cash receipt book of the period 1922-1926 when the Memorial Park Committee, who it seems were part of the Shire of Eltham Soldier's Memorial League, was requested to raise funds for building the Shire of Eltham War Memorial Tower at Kangaroo Ground. History tells us that the tower, which is currently being refurbished, was officially opened by the Governor General of Australia, Lord Stonehaven on 11.11.26. The ladies invited to the first meeting at the Shire Hall did so on 21st September 1922. The minutes book reads: Present: Mesdames Bell, Bourchier, McMahon, Gosling, Cockcroft, Wraight, E Coutie, R Rogers, A Jones, AH White, Davies, Everitt and the Misses Lacey, Harris, N Weller, Gosling, Bell and D and G J Bourchier. These people became the Kangaroo Ground Memorial Bazaar Committee along with others named at further meetings. They conditionally accepted the role of raising funds, their condition being that the Bazaar Committee be given representation on any committee empowered to deal with the memorial in proportion to the amount of money raised by the bazaar'. Caulfield Town Hall was built in 1891. By the 1920's the population of the area had grown rapidly and the building was no longer fit for purpose. A major redevelopment was undertaken in 1930-31, including the building of the large portico entrance and entrance hall. This roll of honour was installed around the inside walls of the entrance hall. Labour on the rebuilding project was largely undertaken by unemployed workers, one of the key ways that Council supported the community during the depression. This roll of honour has considerable local significance to the community of Glen Eira across all of the significance criteria. Alongside the war memorial in Caulfield Park and Caulfield's avenue of honour this roll is a central site of memorial for the residents of the municipality who served in the First World War. It contains the names of all Caulfield residents, including nurses, and makes no distinction between those who returned and those who were killed, making it a rare example amongst Victoria's memorial rolls. The extensive list of names makes it a valuable research tool, and its capacity to interpret municipal, social and military history makes it one of Glen Eira's most significant sites. Large, rectangular, bronze panels displaying polished bronze relief letters alphabetically detailing names of living and deceased citizens who served in the First World War. The panels have been mounted on stone walls with a marble appearance. There are 31 panels - vertically arranged in groups of 9, 1, 2, 2, 4, 3, 2, 3, 2 (clockwise direction) on the walls of the portico entrance foyer, Glen Eira Road entrance to Glen Eira Town Hall. Each panel has 50 names, for a total of 1,550 names.
