Programme - Dedication Service Children's Memorial Ward Albury Base Hospital, 2/23rd Australian Infantry Battalion Association, 1976
The majority of the 2/23rd Battalion's initial intake of volu nteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region and as a result, the 2/23rd became known as "Albury's Own" and were adopted by the city of Albury. In 1946 the2/23 Australian Infantry Battalion Association adopted the children`s ward of the Albury Base Hospital as a memorial ward to honour those who made the supreme sacrifice. Members of the Association continued to raise funds for the hospital, On Anzac Day, 1976 a service was held to dedicate a plaque marking the Children's Ward as a memorial of the 2/23rd Battalion. This is the program from that dedication service. An addition plaque commemorating the efforts of the 2nd / 23rd Australian Infantry Battalion Association in raising funds for the Albury Base Hospital was added on Tuesday 30th November, 1999.This item is part of a collection of items owned by Arthur Lock, a member of the 2/23rd Battalion, an all-volunteer Second Australian Imperial Force which served as part of the garrison during the Siege of Tobruk, then at El Alamein, New Guinea and Borneo. It has particular local significance as the battalion was know as "Albury's Own" because a large majority of the battalion's initial intake of volunteers came from the Albury–Wodonga region. black and white photograph, 1913
When marking a boundary for a registered plan, a surveyor would place “Reference Marks” with a stated bearing and distance to a boundary corner. These trees were typically marked by cutting the bark of the tree in a shield or blaze. Until July 1886, surveyors were only able to use trees as reference marks to boundary corners. After July 1886 surveyors were able to use “permanent marks” which were either a glass bottle, gas pipe or iron bolt (for homestead surveys only). This photograph shows the reference tree, 83 miles from Marlo via the original surveyed road v ia Sydenham Inlet and Tamboon, south of Mount Drummer to the New South Wales border - now the Princes Highway. This is a pictorial record of an old survet tree. Knowledge of their location, abundance and condition not only provide important insights to past survey practice, but also provide a lasting legacy of a regions land-use history. Old survey trees serve as one of the few remaining physical legacies of early European land settlement history.A large black / white photograph of a horse and buggy pulled up alongside a reference tree which has notches and markings of Roman numerals.on back - " Refernce tree 83 miles from Marlo........to N.S.W. Port of Echuca
3 black and white photographs, 20/09/1984
This photograph shows the wharf in the 1980's. It is the early days of tourism, and shows Helen Coulson, dressed in period costume guiding the tourists. The sign shows distances from Echuca to significant sites on the Murray River in miles, as that was the way distance was calculated in the 1870's. The sign is no longer there. This photograph shows Helen Coulson as a tour guide. Helen was the first Manager of the Port of Echuca from the mid 1970's. The tourism industry was still in it's infancy and Helen was a strong supporter of the Port. The photograph also shows the structure of the wharf as the photograph is taken on the lower level.3 black and white photographs of tourists under the wharf with Helen Coulson, dressed in period costume, as a tour guide. The structure of the wharf can be clearly seen. Also a sign with towns showing their distance from Echuca, in miles, can clearly be seen. The three photographs are identical. There are no inscriptions or markings.helen coulson, echuca wharf., tourism, murray river, rosel, mike -

Heliograph
Signalling heliograph which has been manufactured using a variety of military hardware items. Presumably this heliograph was improvised in the field as a result of damage to a standard issue item. This heliograph has parts which have been sourced from other standard military issue equipment, for example, knobs from cooking pots. The item uses the mirrors which are normally found in the standard issue heliograph. This heliograph has two large mirrors (for long distance signalling) and a smaller mirror (for short distance signalling). The mirrors are mounted on adjustable arms for positioning and aiming.no markings to note -
