Headwear - Military Peak Cap, Possibly 1942. May be associated with jacket bearing 10/12/1943 as date of manufacture
Presumably World War II based on comparison with silimar items. Initials inside cap may be associated with item to jacket, initialled with Lt. H. Dixon, VI. 7290.This item has historical signifigance as a an example of Australian military uniform dating presemably to World War II. Military peak cap, dark green. Brown leather chinstrap, attached by buttons on either side of visor with lettering 'AUSTRALIAN MILITARY FORCES' and Australian army insignia. Top of cap has double row of top stitching in dark yellow thread. Metal rimmed air holes (two) on each side under top of cap. Inner band made of brown leather embossed or printed with maker inscription. Rear of inner band has a row of rectangles punched through leather .50 mm in length, 22 in total, threaded through with gold coloured ribbon, tied together at centre back. Inner cap lining made of pale gold fabric, with diamond shaped liner/swear shield attached and topstitched in gold thread. Bronze coloured badge above visor with lettering Australian Commonwealth Military Forces.'THE MYER STORE FOR MEN MILITARY TAILORS MELBOURNE & ADELAIDE' on inner band in gold. Hand written initials H, and what appears to be D N (area has tears and insect damage) visible on lining behind visor. Mess Tin, Corfield & Buckle, Limited - Trafalgar Works, 1939
Although manufactured in 1939 it may be possible that it was issued later during the Korean War (1950-1953) as the burn marks on the exterior sides may indicate the use of a hexamine stove which came into use by the Australian Army in the 1950's.Representative of an army issued accoutrement from the Mid 20th Century which may have been used during the Korean War.Well used military mess tin (aluminium), larger one of nest of two (smaller one missing) with flip over metal (carbon?) handle secured to short end by metal loop and rivets.Inscribed to metal loop fastening flip over handle to tin is the maker’s mark ‘C&B Ltd. 1939’ and arrow insignia for ‘Department of Defence’.cooking, hexamine stove, canteen, mess tin -

Functional object - Ephemera, AMF Button and Naval Button
Two buttons that once belonged to J B McLean. He might have kept them as keepsakes of his time in the army in World War 1. Was with other World War 1 memorabilia that has come from Private John Basil McLean, 2nd Reinforcements, 37th Battalion, A.I.F. J.B. McLean (Service No. 13824) was from near Maffra, Victoria and enlisted on 22 January 1916. He embarked on 16 December 1916 for Europe. He spent time with the Australian Field Artillery (Pack Section). At the end of the war he worked for a year at the A.I.F. Headquarters in London before returning to Australia on the 'Ceramic', arriving in Portsea in 1920. His full war record is available from the National Archives of Australia (B2455, MCLEAN JBM). This is an example of mementos held by an ex soldier. Badge was issued to returned WW1 service personnel who had seen active service. Personnel would wear this when in civilian clothing to avoid being wrongly accused of being disloyal for not being in uniform. Part of the Cooper Collection. Badge was issued to "Herbert Charles Nott" No 288. See catalogue No. 7816.4 for his service record.A gilt bronze badge topped with a KIng's Crown. Two lugs on back.
