George (1895-1976) lived in Middlesex Road, Surrey Hills. He was a clerk and aged 20 when he enlisted on 16 November 1914. He was the son of James Rayment Jnr and his wife Harriet Frances (nee Ratten). He was assigned to 3rd Light Horse Brigade, Headquarters and embarked on TRANSPORT A16 Star Of Victoria on 25 February 1915. He returned to Australia 22 March 1917. His brother James A Rayment also enlisted and was assigned to the 5th Field Company Engineers. Both are listed on The Shrine in the Surrey Gardens. The caption mentions there was an arts and crafts stall run by the widows' clubs in the the City Mall (Bourke St). Also that Hawthorn footballer Peter Curran helped with the badge selling. The Army arrived with a display of vehicles in the city square (corner of Collins and Swanston Sts). This set of nine black and white photographs were taken during the visit to the Army Survey Regiment, Bendigo by the Director of the USA’s Defense Mapping Agency –MAJGEN William L. Nicholson III, on the 7th of February 1980. He was accompanied by US Army COL W.P. ‘Pinky' Holmes and an unidentified Major from the USAF. Proudly worn by soldiers of the 1st and 2nd Australian Imperial Force in both World Wars, the 'Rising Sun' badge has become an integral part of the digger tradition. The distinctive shape of the badge, worn on the upturned side of a slouch hat, is commonly identified with the spirit of Anzac.The Third Pattern - May 1904 The third pattern Rising Sun badge carried a scroll inscribed with the words ‘Australian Commonwealth Military Forces’ and was worn throughout both World Wars. There were, however, a number of variations of the badge; a special version was struck for the coronation of King Edward VII in 1902 and there were badges of the Commonwealth Horse and the Australian Instructional Corps, each with its respective title on the scrolls.
