This is an example of posters with a patriotic theme the purpose of which was to raise money for goods for service personal overseas, during WW2. "Tin-hat" badges were sold for 1 and 2 shillings and 1pound. The 'tin-hat' appeal was conducted from 4 Sept - 17 Sept in 1943. Organised by the Returned Soldiers League. A poster is superimposed on a hidden print. This artwork was found among items associated with the Ballarat School of Mines. Although its purpose remains unknown, it was possibly painted by a staff member or student for use on Wattle Day. Wattle Day originated in October 1889 by the Wattle Blossom League, and was associated with the Australian Natives Association during the lead up to the Federation of Australian States. The first 'national' Wattle Day was celebrated on 1 September 1910. Early Wattle Days involved planting wattle trees in school grounds, street decorations of wattle blossom, and wearing sprigs of wattle. As public support for Wattle Day peaked, World War I broke out. Wattle took on a new significance during the war years, symbolising home for military personnel serving overseas. Beautifully designed Wattle Day badges, as well as wattle sprigs, were sold as a means of raising money for organisations such as the Red Cross. This item is part of the Federation University Art Collection. This flyer in Turkish was printed by the Turkish Islamic Society to advertise an event celebrating the 51st anniversary of the establishment of the Turkish republic. The program for the evening included patriotic songs, poems and traditional music and dance as well as a 3 act play entitled 'Yetis Kemal'. This type of event was regularly held by the Turkish Islamic Society in the early years of the settlement of the Turkish community in Melbourne. Patriotic rosette made of cotton ribbon in various colours. This was presumably worn in recognition of the Allied Countries involved in World War 1. There are coloured ribbons representing Britain, France, Netherlands, Belgium. The centrepiece of the rosette represents the United States of America and there is a piece of ribbon featuring the flags of the United Kingdom, France, The Netherlands and Belgium. The rosette has a small safety pin sewn to the rear for attachment to the wearers clothing. Some of the ribbon colours have faded noticeably.

A medallion presented to Private A. C. Hill by the citizens of Frankston, Victoria. These medallions were presented to local men who enlisted for service as they departed to World War 1 by the "Citizens and Patriotic Committee". The medallion has a gold finish and has an olive wreath around the circumference. A small loop is provided to attach the medallion to a chain or similar. In this case the medallion is attached to a fob watch chain commonly worn by men when dressed in a jacket. (refer item 00325).One side of the medallion is inscribed: "A. The Towaninnie Methodist Church no longer exists but on the Towaninnie plains a location sign marks it. In common with many church communities the faithful who met here were very patriotic and their young men were strongly supported when they volunteeered during the Great War of 1914 -'18. This Honour Board once hung on the Methodist Church wall but is now at the Pioneer Settlement,Swan Hill.The actual Honour Board is believed to be the only one of its type with this listing. The Australian Comforts Fund was established in August 1916 to co-ordinate the activities of the state based patriotic funds, which were established earlier in World War I. Mainly run by women, they provided and distributed free comforts to the Australian 'fit' fighting men in all the battle zones. They became divisions of the Australian Comforts Fund. The Council of the Fund comprised two delegates from New South Wales, Victoria and Queensland and one from the states of Western Australia, South Australia and Tasmania. The Executive headquarters was located in Sydney. It ceased operation on 10 April 1920 and was reconstituted in World War II in June 1940 and ceased operation again on 27 June 1946. The state bodies in World War I were: New South Wales: the 'Citizens' 'War Chest' Fund; Queensland Patriotic Fund; South Australia: League of Loyal Women; Tasmania: 'On Active Service Fund'; Australian Comforts Fund, Victorian Division; Victoria League of Western Australia. The Warrnambool Patriotic fund was established by the Council under the Mayor at the time, A Fritz Landmann, in 1914 to aid the efforts of the first World War. Most towns across Australia had similar fund raising ventures. People and groups were encouraged to subscribe money as well as donations of food and clothing to be sent to soldiers and overseas groups. The Mayoress and the State Schools also had funds at the time along similar lines. A small item which would have been common at the time which links Warrnambool to the major event of the time. For welcome and presentations to St Kilda's (1914) ANZACs on 4 December 1918. The event is described by John Butler Cooper in 'The History of St Kilda' (pp 263-264) as follows: 'On Wednesday evening, December 4, 1918, seventy Anzacs of St. Kilda who had returned were welcomed by the St. Kilda Patriotic Committee at the City Hall. The hall was decorated with an immense bouquet of red, white and blue flowers, depending from the centre of the ceiling, with floral and electric festoons leading therefrom. Anzacs shields in laurel wreaths and flags were displayed along the balcony of the hall. Over the stage the word "Anzacs," outlined by electric lights, was surmounted with the words "Patriotic Committee of St. Kilda heartily Welcomes You." As the returned soldiers marched into the hall, they were received with cheers, and an electric button being touched, the word "Welcome" flashed in light caught their eyes. The Mayor presented the 1914 soldiers with gold enamelled medals, bearing the arms of St. Kilda.' The use of these buttons as a means of raising revenue through patriotic sentiment occurred soon after Australia pledged allegiance to Empire. Buttons reflected ‘public sentiment, courage, patriotism, generosity and several [un- named] virtues’ such as the martyred mother of a ‘fallen’ hero. Attention was paid to attractiveness of design, encoded symbolism and high quality of production. Expressing ‘loyalty’, they were tokens to be kept for perpetuity. Female labour was used to operate the die that compressed the tin backing, photographic print and celluloid cover together. The pin was applied by hand. Women, of all ages, entered into the spirit of voluntary sales. Often they were sold at the entry and exit points of major pedestrian thoroughfares. The women of Kew set up a kiosk in front of the Post Office and the Railway Station to solicit their round, oval and square shaped wares. Pride in salesmanship was affected by publishing the name of the woman and her fiscal achievement in the major newspapers of the day. The badges form part of a collection of ephemera originally purchased by Francis Horace Rigg (19/10/1882-05/03/1946) of 50 Belford Road, Kew (Vic.). Frances Rigg was a local business identity in Kew, ultimately managing the local branch of the English, Scottish and Australian (ES&A) Bank at 175 High Street, Kew from c. 1920 until the 1940s. After Francis Rigg’s death, the collection of buttons and badges was inherited by his son, Ken Rigg (14/11/1922-19/01/2014). The collection was subsequently donated to the Kew Historical Society in 2015 by his grandson Adrian Rigg during the Gallipoli and Beyond Commemoration.The collection covers a period of almost 40 years. The majority of the badges are patriotic buttons, issued and sold during and immediately after World War 1 to raise funds for national and overseas causes. The collection also includes a number of locally significant sporting event buttons and sporting club medallions, issued in the 1920s and 1930s.The use of common symbols for a range of purposes is sometimes a feature of wartime and post-war fundraising buttons.
