One of series of illustrated envelopes, without letter, sketched by soldier/s during the second world war and sent to Mrs McDonald of Grey Street WangarattaVictoria's 2/24th Infantry Battalion was raised in Wangaratta in July 1940. They were welcomed with open arms by the local community as they rapidly built up their numbers. The people of Wangaratta adopted the Battalion and they became known as "Wangaratta's Own" because of the time the battalion spent in the town during its formative period prior to deployment overseas. Many of the soldiers maintained life long friendships with the people of Wangaratta. Upon returning to the UK was stationed at Bridport, South Shields, Glasgow. Arrived in Australia in 1856. Stationed in N.S.W. then at St. Kilda, Ballarat East, Richmond. President of the Australasian Conference 1866. President of Horton College at Ross, Tasmania. Founder and President of the Council of Queen's College, University of Melbourne. Matthew Burnett (1839 - 1896). Wesleyan temperance evangelist. Born in Yorkshire, came to Australia in 1857 with his wife Sarah Gibson. He spent the years 1864 to 1867 on the goldfields evangelising against drink and securing temperance pledges. Sarah Burnett died in 1871 and Matthew returned to England in 1873, meeting leading temperance reformers. He returned to Australia in the mid-1870s. He went to South Australia, Western Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand as a temperance campaigner, and claimed to have received pledges from 140,000 people. John Gartner was a fine printer and publisher, an author, a noted philatelist, and also collector of Australian banknotes and coins. He was born on 16 July 1914 and was largely self-educated, leaving school at fourteen for work following the death of his father. Gartner developed a strong interest in the history of typography and printing and was apprenticed at the Advocate where his father had been a linotype operator. Aged 17, Gartner bought a hand press and some fonts of type, and in 1937 acquired a platen press from which he set and printed his private press books, published under the imprint of The Hawthorn Press. Gartner had a strong collection of Australian bookplates. He also looked at the work of artists overseas and commissioned personal plates. He subsequently built an international collection with preference for artists who printed from wood.
